Est. $ HKA#50667 Chopmarked Coins Chopmarked coins represent a special part of numismatics and the history of the dollar. These coins (by most general and common definition) were usually United States trade dollars that have been counterstamped or marked with Chinese characters to signify approval of the coins worth and authenticity in the Chinese marketplace. F.M. Rose wrote a book titled Chopmarks in 1987, which states that the term chopmark is said to have been taken from the Indian term chappa or choppa, which means an official stamp or seal. While chopmarking was once considered a time-honored tradition in China, the U.S. Government termed the coins damaged or mutilated in an apparent attempt to avoid redeeming them. Still, thousands of coins were marked by Chinese merchants (including some counterfeit coins in an effort to pass them off) to the point where some coins became misshapen and almost illegible because they were so heavily marked. The actual marks are normally Chinese characters or designs that were imprinted with ink or stamped with punches on the surface of the coin. They are more commonly seen on silver coins, than gold. Rose has an extensive list of types of chopmarks in his book, which includes variations such as test marks (mostly done to uncover plating), Chinese Merchant and Wife tiny symbols, larger Chinese characters, rarely seen relief marks, uncommon rectangular assay marks, Latin letters, numbers, rare and collectible San Francisco c1870 Manchu script and banker s ink. Some of the translated symbols and characters include words like immortal, commodity, wealth, dollar, forever and master as well as the names of the merchants. [Ref: F. M.
