1 CALLBOARD ANTIQUE FIRE ASSOCIATION of NEW JERSEY FEBRUARY NORTH JERSEY CHAPTER of SPAAMFAA VOL. 31, ISSUE 2 NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, :30 PM Secaucus Fire Department, Washington Hook & Ladder 272 County Ave., Secaucus, NJ (Above) This impressive Model BT Ahrens-Fox is owned by Echo Hose & Hook & Ladder 1 of Shelton, CT A regular at Valhalla years ago, it was a pleasure to both see and hear it at a recent parade in its home state. A TRIP DOWN AHRENS-FOX s MEMORY LANE There is a scene at the end of the holiday movie Miracle on 34 th Street where a disappointed Suzie (played by Natalie Wood) is being driven back to the city by her mother and uncle following a route supplied by Kris Kringle. Suzie suddenly spots her dream house, a postwar Cape, and orders Uncle Fred to stop the car. She jumps out and races into her house. This scene was repeated by three full-grown adult male antique apparatus buffs while familiarizing themselves with the route for the annual Connecticut Fire Chief s parade last fall at Clinton, Connecticut. In their travels they spotted an Ahrens-Fox piston pumper with a closed cab perched on a lowboy. Needless to say, the driver, Frank not Fred,
2 was told stop! Yes, they exited the car and raced toward the big Fox. The rig on the trailer was a closed cab 1939 BT Ahrens-Fox that had been a regular participant at the Valhalla Musters held at the Kensico Dam in New York. Like so many other Ahrens-Foxes, it had disappeared after that muster ended. It became even a greater thrill once the big rig roared to life. Unrestored, it is in pristine condition. As there is talk of an Ahrens-Fox reunion in either 2012 or in conjunction with the 2013 SPAAMFAA National Convention, I thought it would be appropriate to put together a list of rigs in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut area. Without doubt this list in all likelihood contains some Ahrens-Fox apparatus that has changed hands in recent years. I have also probably omitted quite a few pieces that might participate in such a muster. Please do not be bashful, additions and corrections are most welcome. The information supplied has been limited to the delivery year, model, serial number, previous owner, and current owner if that has changed Continental (184) Friendship Fire Company, Woodbury, NJ 1916 K-3 (622) Woodbury, NJ 1922 R-K-4 (1121) Relief Hose, Moorestown, NJ 1923 N-S-4 (943) Doylestown, PA 1923 M-S-4 (1090) Union FC, Lambertville, NJ 1925 N-S-4 (1630) Lady Warren E-5, W.
