The Great River Road in Illinois follows the western border of the state for 550 amazing miles. There are many things to see and do along the byway from small towns with historic shopping districts, to big cities with rich history and ample amenities. If you re looking for a relaxing getaway, visit an Illinois winery and enjoy the comforts of home at a local bed and breakfast. If you want to spend time outdoors, visit one of the many recreational areas scattered all along the byway, where you ll find varied opportunities year round. While on the byway, take in the panoramic views, winding bluff roads, and rich farm landscapes. We hope you enjoy your activities here! Quad Cities Convention Creekside Vineyards Winery & Inn th Avenue, Coal Valley WINE Whether it s an interest in winemaking and viticulture or you desire a refreshing get-a-way, Creekside invites you to join them. Spend a night or two at the Inn or just come for a visit and taste the wines. A tasting room is available year-round at 1667 US Highway 67 in Preemption, Illinois. You can also enjoy the seasonal terrace and vineyards in Coal Valley from May October. The inn is open year-round. Call or visit our website for tasting hours or make an appointment. Reservations for the inn can be made by calling Lavender Crest Winery 5401 U.S. Highway 6, Colona Lavender Crest Winery features wine production, tours, a wine tasting room, a gift shop, a dining area that serves lunch daily, and a banquet center that seats guests. The banquet room has been host to wedding receptions, business meetings, and Friday Night Wine Downs where visitors are invited to listen to music, have a light meal, and let the cares of the week disappear. The winery hosts two private labels Mary Michelle and Illinois Cellars. Their awardwinning wines are served exclusively in their tasting room at Pere Marquette Lodge, located in scenic Pere Marquette State Park. The Lodge's patio and river view terrace make it a perfect wine tasting venue. Piasa Winery & Pub* 225 West Main Street, Grafton Piasa Winery offers 15 of their own awardwinning wines made from grapes grown locally. You ll love the picturesque setting: the wine garden; deer running across the field; wild turkeys making their way into the woods and lots of rabbits. Campgrounds are available for anyone who wants a real getaway. 7 Museums, Historic & Educatio nal Sites Galena/Jo Daviess County Convention The Gramercy Park Foundation Beecher and Gramercy Streets, East Dubuque Gramercy-Park/ Within historic Gramercy Park lies 26 ancient Hopewell Indian Mounds, an archeological treasure. It affords a superlative view of the Mississippi River. Long Hollow Scenic Overlook One mile west of Highway 84 and U.S. Highway 20, Elizabeth Marvel at a spectacular 360 degree view of the Jo Daviess County countryside. Imagine some of the first settlers to inhabit God s Country, such as Chief Black Hawk, the lead miners, steam boat captains and early farmers. Great photo opportunities. The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design 601 South Prospect Street, Galena This satellite facility of an international museum features contemporary art, architecture, and photography from around the world. Elihu B. Washburne House State Historic Site 908 Third Street, Galena Washburne was a popular congressman and a friend of both Lincoln and Grant. Grant s election news was received in the library via telegraph. Open on Fridays only. Galena & U.S. Grant Museum 211 South Bench Street, Galena Ghosts of the Grants hologram, Civil War exhibits, 1830s lead mine shaft. Book/gift shop. Galena merchandise. Daily: 9am 4:30pm Galena s Main Street Galena Galena s historic Main Street, named Best Main Street in the Midwest by Midwest Living magazine, curves past nearly th-century storefronts. Galena looks much as it did during the time of the Civil War, although now the historic red brick buildings are home to charming boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Old Market House State Historic Site 123 North Commerce Street, Galena This public building was the center of community life during Galena s Golden Era. U.S. Grant Exhibition is featured with several Grant artifacts. Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site 500 Bouthillier Street, Galena General U.S. Grant was presented this Italianate home upon his return to Galena in The home was opened to the public in 1904 and has been restored as it appeared during the post-civil War period and the Grant Presidency GRR-7007 ( ) GreatRiverRoad-Illinois.org 12

8 Museums, Historic & Educational Sites Blackhawk Waterways Convention Albany Indian Mounds State Historic Site Cherry Street and 12th Avenue, Albany Stroll along a serene walking trail that leads to Native American burial grounds dating back to 2000 B.C. Interpretive displays, bike trails, cross-country ski trails, picnic tables. Tri-Township Heritage Museum 306 Lime Street, Albany Historical pictures, books, journals and other historical items and memorabilia from Albany, Garden Plain and Newton. Memorial Day to Labor Day: 9am 11am De Immigrant Windmill 10th Avenue and 1st Street, Fulton Authentic, fully operational Dutch windmill constructed in the Netherlands and shipped to Fulton, where it is now on the levee on the banks of the Mississippi River. The 90 foot tall windmill is full operational. May October Heritage Canyon 515 North Fourth Street, Fulton This 12 acre quarry located on the Mississippi River has been restored and features a furnished mid 1800 settlement. Martin House Museum th Avenue, Fulton Civil war era home contains stained glass windows, walnut bench seating, and a walnut staircase. Museum features memorabilia and artifacts pertinent to Fulton s history. Sunday: 2pm 4pm and by appointment Windmill Cultural Center th Street, Fulton Houses an extensive collection of 21 European windmills from ten European countries. See informative interpretive exhibits on the products produced by windmills and windmill specifications, various special exhibits, an education area with children s activities, and gift shop with stone ground flour, Delft pottery, and souvenirs of Fulton and the windmill. May November Savanna Historical Museum & Cultural Center 406 Main Street, Savanna Over 100 mannequins in authentic Civil War uniforms, railroad memorabilia, large HO scale train set-up and more. Savanna Train Car Museum 25 Main Street, Savanna The Savanna Train Car Museum was established in 2006 and has accepted the responsibility of preserving area railroad artifacts and memorabilia for future generations to explore and gain a better understanding of railroad history and to work towards keeping the vision alive. T-shirts, caps, train sets and more in the gift shop. Quad Cities Convention Biggsville Horse and Buggy Museum 201 East Main Street, Biggsville The museum offers visitors a glimpse of the past. Exhibits and programs interpret the period from 1820 to 1920 when horses were a primary source of power for farming and transportation. Over 50 pieces of machinery are displayed inside a 6000 square foot building. March 15 July 15 and September 15 November 15: Tuesday Saturday: 10am 3pm John Deere Harvester Works Tour th Avenue, East Moline For an unforgettable experience, schedule a tour to see how John Deere makes the most advanced, most productive combines in the world. The tour begins in the visitor center where you will learn about different crops and how huge machines make harvesting faster and easier. Exclusive Harvester Works merchandise is available in the gift shop. (Tours subject to availability and factory production schedules. Closed-toe shoes are required, and the minimum age is 13. Call ahead to receive a tour time). Free Admission. Tours: Monday Friday: 8am, 10am, and 12:30pm Deere & Company World Headquarters One John Deere Place, Moline Located on a beautiful, wooded 120-acre campus and includes a 15,000 square foot agricultural, golf and turf, construction and consumer products display. 9 Museums, Historic & Educational Sites Quad Cities Convention Deere - Wiman House & Butterworth Center th Street, Moline Visit these two historic homes that once belonged to descendants of the John Deere family. Scheduled summer tours are given in July and August: Sunday: 1pm 4pm, Open weekdays by appointment. The gardens of the homes are open 7 days a week during daylight hours. John Deere Pavilion 1400 River Drive, Moline The all-new experience at the John Deere Pavilion has big, powerful machines that invite you to grab the controls and let your imagination run. Climb into one of the simulators and test your skills in realistic job situations. Or check out an awesome machine that has legs instead of wheels. Bring your kids for some fun in the Discovery Zone. They may never want to leave. Free Admission. Monday Friday: 9am 5pm, Saturday: 10am 5pm, Sunday: Noon 4pm Alexis Phelps House 2nd and Hancock Street, Oquawka Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1883 home was built for Alexis Phelps, a longstanding friend of Judge Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Henderson County Courthouse 4th and Warren, Oquawka This building, circa 1842, is the second oldest courthouse in Illinois and is still in use GRR-7007 ( ) 14 3 Henderson Covered Bridge Route 164, Oquawka Built in 1866, the bridge is one of five left in Illinois, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Colonel Davenport House Arsenal Island, Rock Island Located on the Rock Island Arsenal, this was the home of Colonel George Davenport, one of the region s founding fathers. Built in 1833, guided tours of this furnished home will reveal interesting facts about Quad Cities history, the famous people that visited the home, and the tragic ending for Colonel Davenport who was murdered by bandits. 17 John Hauberg Indian Museum th Avenue, Rock Island Replicas of the Sauk winter and summer houses, along with dioramas with life-size figures depict the activities of the Sauk and Meskwaki people in this museum situated in Black Hawk State Historic Site. Voted one of the Seven Wonders of Illinois. Karpeles Manuscript Museum nd Street, Rock Island Karpeles Manuscript Museums have the world s largest private holding of important manuscripts and document. This new addition to the Karpeles Manuscript Museums is located in a former church that was built in 1914 and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The museum features various shows throughout the year featuring manuscripts, displays, letters and documents from such famous people as Mark Twain. Check the website for current exhibits. Tuesday Sunday: 11am 4pm Mississippi River Visitor Center Arsenal Island, Rock Island Affords an excellent view of the river, lock and dam operations, the variety of boats used on the river, and of bald eagles that use the river during winter. Lock & Dam tours are available during the summer months by appointment. Free Admission. Daily: 9am 5pm Rock Island Arsenal Museum 1 Rock Island Arsenal Building 60, Rock Island The Arsenal Museum tells the history of the island through exhibits and photos, and features a model of Fort Armstrong the first fort built on the island. It also features a premiere firearm collection. The Arsenal Museum is the second oldest U.S. Army Museum in the country and celebrated its 100th anniversary in Free Admission. Quad City Botanical Center th Avenue, Rock Island This conservatory features tropical plants, gardens, waterfalls, and is kid friendly. Quincy Area Convention Carthage Jail & Visitors Center 310 Buchanan Street, Carthage Built of native yellow limestone between 1839 and It was the site where the Mormon leader, Joseph Smith Jr., and his brother Hyrum, were killed by an angry mob on June 27, Their action resulted in the Mormons abandoning nearby Nauvoo on their famous trek west that led to the founding of Salt Lake City, Utah. May August: Monday Saturday: 9am 7pm, Sunday: 10:30am 6pm September April: Monday Saturday: 9am 5pm, Sunday: 12:30pm 5pm Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum 306 Walnut Street, Carthage or The museum features historical displays of life in Hancock County, Native Americans, pioneers, agriculture, exhibits on domestic life, natural history in dioramas, fossils, minerals, and geodes. The museum also includes a new Lincoln exhibit that contains Civil War artifacts and highlights Lincoln s life in Illinois. In the 1840 s the house was a stopping point on the Underground Railroad, as escaping slaves made their way north to freedom. February November: Saturday: 1pm 4pm East End Historic District & Northwest Historic District Quincy Within the East End Historic District, the corner of 16th and Maine Streets was described by National Geographic as one of the ten most architecturally significant corners of the United States. The Northwest Historic District was the popular location to build large mansions, with most of the homes located on the bluffs. John Wood Mansion 425 South 12th Street, Quincy The John Wood Mansion is the restored home of Quincy s founder and the twelfth Governor of Illinois, John Wood. The mansion is recognized by historians and architects as one of the Midwest s finest existing examples of Greek Revival architecture. The Alton Museum of History & Art shows the crossroads of American history right here in Alton. The museum is located in the historic Loomis Hall across from the Wadlow statue. Loomis Hall is the oldest building in the state of Illinois continuously utilized for education. One of the most popular rooms, the Wadlow Room, pays tribute to Alton s Gentle Giant and the World s Tallest Man. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site and World Heritage Site 30 Ramey Drive, Collinsville Cahokia Mounds contains the remains of an ancient city founded by a Mississippian culture that flourished from A.D., and then vanished. It is the largest prehistoric Indian city north of Mexico. Climb the 100 foot tall Monk s Mound; see the film and life-size village. Don t miss annual events that focus on Native American culture. All that remains today are fascinating earthworks around the perimeter and a spectacular scenic overlook of the Mississippi and Kaskaskia Rivers as well as the site of Old Kaskaskia. Pierre Menard Home State Historic Site 4230 Kaskaskia Street, Ellis Grove The Pierre Menard Home, built in 1802, is the finest example of French colonial architecture in the central Mississippi Valley. Built for Illinois first Lieutenant Governor, the home sits on a hill among lush landscaping, and offers visitors a look into the life of a successful entrepreneur and political leader Historic Maeystown Village Maeystown The entire 160 year-old German settlement is on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration includes a church from 1867 and the one-lane stone arched bridge. The Corner George Inn, general store, kaffeehaus, sweet shoppe, museum and visitors center are open Thursday through Sunday. Fort de Chartres State Historic Site 1350 State Route 155, Prairie du Rocher The 1790s fort, formerly one of the strongest forts in North America, is being rebuilt atop the original stone foundations. The chapel, priest s room, commander s office and ammunition storage room have been restored. Every year, the Winter and Summer Rendezvous draw thousands of visitors. Wednesday Sunday: 9am 5pm Carbondale Tourism: African American Museum of Southern Illinois University Mall, 1237 East Main Street, Carbondale Highlights local African-American heroes and heroines such as the first black police officer in the area. Is the only African American Museum between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Chicago. Rotating displays have included the Underground Railroad message quilts. Monday Thursday: Noon 6pm, Friday & Saturday: 10am 9pm Woodlawn Cemetery 405 East Main Street, Carbondale Designed by Carbondale founder Daniel Brush in 1853 and the burials at the cemetery began soon after. The cemetery includes 217 plots on approximately a 2.5-acre tract and contains over 400 gravesites. Many Union and Confederate soldiers and prominent townspeople of the midlate 1800s are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery. It was also the location of the first organized Memorial Day service in Illinois, and perhaps the first in the Nation. The Illinois Central Railroad Train Museum 111 South Illinois Avenue, Carbondale Carbondale wouldn t be the city it is today without the influence of the railroad. Built in 1908 as an Illinois Central Railroad Passenger Depot, the Train Museum is one of Carbondale s favorite attractions. Complete with artifacts, souvenirs, and tons of history, the museum is a great activity for those of all ages. While guided tours must be scheduled in advance, the museum is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9am 4:30pm The Science Center of Southern Illinois 1237 East Main Street, Carbondale The Science Center of Southern Illinois is a hands-on children s museum with an array of exhibits to explore. The museum features more than 50 exhibits, including the most recent addition of an 8ft tall, 20ft long Allosaurus fragilis replica. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 5pm. Admission is $4 per person, infants 2 and under are free. University Museum Faner Hall, 1000 Faner Drive, Carbondale The Museum houses an art collection and a collection of pre-historic, historic and scientific objects. One of the permanent and very popular exhibits is the W.P.A. Safford Memorial Library 1609 Washington Avenue, Cairo A working library of Queen Anne architecture which houses a valuable collection of Civil War documents and museum quality antiques and paintings. Two niches on the outside of the building at the entrance hold statues of Clio, the Greek Muse of history, and Concordia, a Roman goddess of peace. A rare Tiffany grandfather clock stands on the first landing of the stairs. On the second landing is a fourteenth century Italian rosewood credenza. Monday Friday: 9:30am 4:30pm Fort Defiance U.S. Highway 60 & 62, Cairo Fort Defiance, known as Camp Defiance during the American Civil War, was a former military fortification located at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Although the fort itself is no longer there, it is a great place to fish and you can view the confluence from atop Boatman s Memorial. It is the southernmost point in the state of Illinois. Magnolia Manor 2700 Washington Avenue, Cairo This 4 story, 14 room mansion is full of history. Inside the home are many original, 19th century furnishings. Historians will give the group a guided tour and answer questions. Riverlore Mansion 2723 Washington Avenue, Cairo A stately white French Second Empire Style Mansion nestled quietly in Cairo s residential section at 28th and Washington Avenues, once known as Millionaire s Row. Riverlore is an 11 room brick home built in 1865 by Captain William Parker Halliday, a prominent Cairo businessman and riverboat captain. U.S. Custom House Museum 1400 Washington, Cairo Built in 1872, today it houses several unique historical items. Many interesting displays are shown in the museum including Civil War memorabilia, a replica of the U.S.S. Cairo gunboat, an 1865 Cairo Fire Department hand-operated pumper, and an exhibit on the 1937 flood in Cairo. Information regarding the Custom House architect and a Civil Warera desk used by Ulysses S. Grant when he was in Cairo are also on display. Tuesday Friday: 10am Noon and 1pm 3pm Fountain Bluff Indian Carvings Illinois Route 3, Gorham or Prehistoric dwellers left their mark on the rock walls of Fountain Bluff. The mysterious carvings depict wolves, birds, deer, human forms, crosses, circle and other geometric figures. Mississippi River Museum & Interpretive Center 604 Front Street, Grand Tower Grand Tower is a city rich in history that is inseparable from the history of the Mighty Mississippi River itself. To preserve the history and culture of life on the water, dating back to the heyday of steamboats, the museum houses artifacts from this bygone era. For a step-back in time, and a glimpse of the life experiences along the Mighty Mississippi River, stop by this newly opened museum and explore. Tower Rock Grand Tower The Jackson County City of Grand Tower took its name from Tower Rock, a small rocky island on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River. At one time, a large crucifix was place on the island by Catholic missionaries. The rock has long been feared by riverboat captains because of the rapid current that swirl at its base. This navigational point for early explorers was visited by Lewis and Clark. The General John A. Logan Museum 1613 Edith Street, Murphysboro The museum tells the story of Civil War General John A Logan, his family and life in the nineteenth century through the use of photographs, portraits, maps, political memorabilia, antiques and weapons. The museum has expanded from a single building into a neighborhood, including a walking trail (with interpretive signposts) that passes by Logan s birthplace, now an archaeological site, and the house of Samuel H. Dalton, a freed slave who served in the Union Navy, a print shop and two additional historic homes. The museum houses the permanent Logan exhibit, and is also host to many local and traveling exhibits, special educational events.
