Gold Models with ESU Sound PROTOTYPE INFORMATION: Powered by a V12 FDL prime mover, the 2250 h.p. U23B was GE s intermediate-sized four-axle road-switcher of the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. The U23B s direct competitor during this period was the very successful EMD GP38. In 10 years of production, from 1968 through 1977, a total of 481 units were produced, making this the second best seller of GE s Universal Series locomotives. The first units were delivered to the Delaware & Hudson in August and September CSX predecessors Chesapeake & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville had a combined fleet of 120 units, giving CSX one of the larger active fleets in later years. Penn Central, Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific also purchased sizeable fleets of U23Bs. PAGE 4

The fifty foot composite auto boxcar, consisting of steel framing with wood sheathing and having large door openings of at least 12 feet and 10 feet of interior height was a perfect fit for those railroads, mostly western and southern, that did not have the clearance restrictions imposed initially by the tunnels and existing trackwork of the northeast. These forerunners to the modern enclosed autorack were frequently reconfigured throughout their lifetimes, and could be found with a mixed variety of features, such as Evans autoloader racks, different side door styles, optional drive in end doors, roof designs and overall height to enable the rapid loading and unloading of not only automobiles, but whatever commodity the railroad required. Aptly nicknamed, Shorty or Beer Can for its diminutive size, the car is based off of an ACF design. At the time, larger tank cars were being ordered, but there was enough demand for a smaller tank car that could meet the needs of shippers with smaller sidings and weight limits on tracks. Usually these tank cars saw service hauling corn syrup, oils, and other heavy liquids. In addition to the unique paint schemes applied to the cars, they would look great in single shipment service or in a block of 3 heading back to the processing plant. 25 Atlas Master HO u23b Locomotive Ordering: Conrail Express Missouri Pacific PROTOTYPE INFORMATION: Powered by a V12 FDL prime mover, the 2250 h.p. U23B was GE s intermediate-sized four-axle road-switcher of the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. The U23B s direct competitor during this period was the very successful EMD GP38. In 10 years of production from 1968 through 1977 a total of 481 units were produced, making this the second best seller of GE s Universal Series locomotives. The first units were delivered to the Delaware & Hudson in August and September CSX predecessors Chesapeake & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville had a combined fleet of 120 units, giving CSX one of the larger active fleets in later years. Penn Central, Santa Fe and Missouri Pacific also purchased sizeable fleets of U23Bs. Primary spotting features include a stepped-out radiator section and two sets of three tall engine access doors near the center of the long hood. During production, the U23B was equipped with various truck side frames, including Blomberg trucks from EMD trade-in locomotives, AAR-style trucks, or GE s own four-axle FB2 truck. One of these three truck styles is included on our model where appropriate per road name. Today the number of active U23B s has dwindled, but a handful can still be found working for short lines and regional railroads in North America. During the same time period, Atlantic Coast Line purchased 50. These cars were added to the front of passenger trains traveling coast-to-coast on all major railroads. These new steel express cars utilized welded construction and a new high speed truck design. They were able to carry both refrigerated loads as well as parcel loads due to their collapsible ice bunkers that were stored away when not in use. Two major types of cars emerged for hauling coal; hoppers and gondolas. The earlier cars were made of wood, then steel, and later aluminum. The lighter weight of aluminum allows greater lading and cubic foot capacities ideal for bulk minerals transport. By the 1980s, both coal hoppers and coal gondolas were using aluminum bodies in their construction. The Trainman Aluminum Coal Gondola model represents a typical Association of American Railroads car type code J311, a gondola car with a load limit greater than 185,000 lbs, depressed bottom, and 36 to 48 interior length. Typical of these cars is the rotary coupler usually signified by a contrasting colour on one or, both ends. The Trainman model has thirteen side stakes and a double tub bottom.
