1 Toll Booth Task: You must design, build, and test a toll both that has a gate arm that raises and lowers to let cars through. The toll gate arm will be operated using limit switches to detect whether or not a car is waiting or has already passed through. The toll booth will also need a red light to show when the arm is in motion or down, and a green light to show when the arm is up and cars can safely go through. Coding Practice Required: Potentiometer Practice Problems #1-3 Build a toll booth with an arm that raises and lowers. This does not need to be very large. Attach a motor and a potentiometer to the toll arm, and (2) limit switches. One to sense the cars approaching the gate and raise the arm, and one to sense when the car is safely through the gate which will lower the gate arm. A green and a red LED light will also be necessary. Code the limit switches to move the motor attached to the toll gate. Use the potentiometer to make sure that the toll gate does not over rotate. Also code the LED lights to turn on and off at the appropriate times.

2 Grandma s Chair Task: You must design, build, and test a chair for Grandma to use to ride up and down the stairs. Grandma needs to have a switch that is mounted on her chair to start the ride up or down when she is settled in and ready, as well as a button at the top and bottom of the stairs to call the chair. You will also need to use light sensors to stop the chair at the top and bottom of the stairs. Build a small prototype of a chair that goes up and down the stairs. The chair should move on an angle. Attach a button to the chair, and a button at the top and bottom of the stairs. You will also need a light sensor at both the top and bottom of the stairs to sense when the chair needs to come to a stop. Code the chair to move up or down the stairs at the push of a button. Also code the additional buttons and sensors to call and stop the chair on command.

3 Traffic Light Task: You must design, build, and test a traffic light control system. Normally the traffic light should cycle from green to yellow to red and back to green. However, when an ambulance is on its way, the traffic light needs to stay on red. You need to install two light sensors, one to sense the ambulance coming and turn the traffic light to red, and another to turn the light back to green when the ambulance is safely through the intersection. Build a holder for the traffic lights, doesn t need to be anything fancy, just somewhere to put the lights and wires. Attach 3 different lights to make the traffic light. Also attach (2) light sensors before and after the traffic light. Code light sensors to see when the ambulance is approaching the intersection and when it has safely cleared the light sensor. Otherwise the lights should cycle green to yellow to red.

4 Merry-Go-Round Task: You must design, build, and test a merry-go-round. The merry-go-round horses must go around and up and down. The ride must start and stop with a light sensor instead of a button. Build a merry-go-round with a motor that spins the merry-go-round and another motor which will move the horses up and down. Attach the motors and the light sensor in a way that won t get tangled up when the merry-go-round. Code the merry-go-round to move around and go up and down when the light sensor is covered or uncovered. Throwing Arm/Ball Launcher Task: You must design, build, and test a throwing arm or a ball launcher. Your invention must launch a ball at least 5 feet. You can construct it however you like. Coding Practice Required: Potentiometer Practice #1-3 Coding Practice Suggested: While Loop Directions, If statements Build an arm or mechanism that will launch a ball at least 5 feet. Attach any motors, switches, or potentiometers that you may need. Code your invention so that it can throw or launch a ball at least 5 feet.
