The panel will present this concept and the similarities and idiosyncrasies of its implementation on each of the continents. 7 Related activities June to October, 2014 Short Course Series Tourism Based on Development: unity in diversity A series of short courses introducing the topics of the Congress will bring together Brazilian researchers for discussions on subjects related to tourism based on development, such as the dilemmas of the idea of the right to tourism, the spectacle and the exotic in solidarity tourism, public policies on accessible tourism and the sustainability of community tourism as a social enterprise. 8 Tour São Paulo, Postcard The arrival of large waves of immigrants in the late nineteenth century and of migrants in the following century, attracted by coffee plantations and then by factories and the service sector, have made São Paulo a major metropolis. The city grew and new traditions took root. Today it is an important global economic and financial center, and also a major center irradiating trends, culture and entertainment throughout Brazil. The tour is an invitation to visit some of the most interesting locations among the numerous sights in the capital and a come into closer contact with its history and its architectural features, to hear about its people, to sample its cuisine and contemplate its nature. The historical downtown, financial center, and important cultural and recreational sights will be visited. The tour includes an accompanying historian and guide certified by the Ministry of Tourism, transportation, insurance against personal accidents, breakfast and lunch. The tour will be conducted in English and Portuguese. Participants will present current researchs on the state of the art and practical experiences in areas related to Tourism Based on Development, based on studies that investigate the relationship between tourism and ethics, tourism and the role of women, tourism and migration, and tourism and North-South and South-South dialogs, among others.
