8 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The following research will develop adventure tourism in provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo. It will be realized with the purpose of identifying the important tourist attractions of adventure to create a route of entertainment and to taste, being that its general objective is the design of a tourist guide emphasizing the natural aspects and adventure that offer the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo. Thanks to this work it is possible to know more easily the attractions that can be observed in the chosen route. With the information obtained it will be possible to arrive at different conclusions, as it is the lack of information and promotion on the attractive of adventure that owns the province of Chimborazo since with the found it is demonstrated that it is a fundamental site within the tourist attractions of the Ecuador. The methods to be used will be: historical because it is essential to know the history of the place observation and signing and field research that will collect data first hand for the realization of the tourist guide. 9 INTRODUCTION Tourism is one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world, and adventure tourism is one of its fastest growing categories. Increasingly, countries in all stages of economic development are prioritizing adventure tourism for market growth, because they recognize it s ecological, cultural, and economic value. Adventure tourism in Ecuador has become one of the most important activities, as it not only influences in its scope, but also has improved the quality of life of those who work in this economic action. This research tries to find a global definition of adventure tourism in the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo, from the perspective of the suppliers to form a conceptual framework of empirical application. In Ecuador, the Regulation of Adventure Tourism Operation is issued in 2014, a substantial advance for a reliable tourist operation and for the tourist to have their security. ix

10 JUSTIFICATION Provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo are two of the most important provinces of Ecuador, since they possess great variety of natural and cultural tourist attractions very important within the country, as they are the volcanoes Tungurahua, Carihuairazo, Altar and Chimborazo with the existence of this variety of attractions can be ensured the attraction to tourists who like adventure sports. In addition, with those for the creation of adventure a tourist route whose landscape beauty are incomparable and attracts the attention of tourists, visitors and neighboring residents, which is why the design of these routes in these two provinces will allow enhancing the tourist attractions, identify them as one more option for tourism within Ecuador. Thanks to the realization of this adventure tourism route will be constituted in one more way to improve the local tourist development in addition to the social, economic and labor aspect as it will contribute to the use of tourism resources and new tendencies of adventure as a means to Attracting tourists that will generate both national and local benefits linking the communities and their inhabitants in the strengthening of tourism. x

11 OBJETIVES GENERAL OBJETIVES Design an adventure tourism route for the use of the tourist attractions of the Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces. SPECIFIC OBJETIVES Choose the best adventure activities in the Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces. Known the tourist attractions of adventure that the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo. Make an informative brochure of the adventure activities offered by the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo. xi

12 INVESTIGATION METHODOLOGY In the present investigation the following research methods were used: Descriptive research: It describes the tourist attractions of adventure that are in the provinces of Tungurahua and Chimborazo. Documentary and field research: Through bibliographic consultation in documents, books, magazines, investigations, etc. As well as the gathering of insitu information to obtain accurate data for the use of the tourist resources of the places. xii

Tungurahua province CHAPTER I ATTRACTIVES OF TUNGURAHUA AND CHIMBORAZO Is located at south of Quito. the capital is Ambato,the province takes its name from the Tungurahua volcano, which is located within the boundaries of the provinces. The province is very mountainous. Tungurahua province is located in the eastern hole of the Patate. His name translated into Spanish "throat in flames", tungur = throat and rauray = ardor, flames. Capital: Ambato Area: 3, km2 Altitude: 2,600 m (8,500 ft) Population (2011) INEC decadal national census: 581,389 habitants Limits North: Cotopaxi province and Napo province South: Chimborazo province and Morona Santiago province East: Pastaza province West: Cotopaxi province and Bolivar province Gráfico1. 14 1.1. Baños The name Baños (pronounced by some people Banios or Baños) came from the hot springs found all around the city. The hot springs, baños, are located just a few blocks away from the city center. Baños water is sometimes yellow colored by the high mineral content, and the temperature varies by the amount of cold water mixed into the bath Baños and its local tour operators have the technical and logistics team which are qualified to give you a unique and safe experience. These adventure activities are controlled and supervised by the municipality through local safety rules and regulations. 15 Bridge jump or pendulum Just for the wildest one, an extremely exciting experience. A jump from the Rio Blanco Bridge is a great start for those who want to catch the excitement. This bridge is located about 20 minutes outside of town. Feel the sensation as you free fall from a height of 35 meters, other place that you can try this adventure sport is in San Francisco brigde Gráfico 3.Bridge jump Canyoning Fuente: Fantastic rappelling through clear waterfalls that can reach 35 meters is waiting for you between incredible landscapes and amazing weather. The Rio Blanco presents us with a group of waterfalls, surrounded by an abundance of nature and habitat for countless birds. Look closely and you may spot the mystical and elusive cock of the rock, a magnificent orange bird found only in this type of environment. 16 Canopy Known as zip-line canopy, this activity allowed us to experience flying through the treetops, or river canyons, while your heartbeat increases as speed continues. Gráfico 5. Canopy Fuente: Miguel Rodríguez Hiking There are marked trails from which you can observe the kindness that Mother Nature has given this city, from a stunning rain forest to an orchid in its natural state. To take longer tours please consider hiring a tour or a guide. Gráfico 6. Hicking Fuente: Bike Tours There are many options to cycle around the Baños areas the most popular one is the Orchids and Waterfalls Route: it has signs and is well preserved. You can see all waterfalls from this route. When you hire a bike please check that it is in perfect 4

17 conditions, the tour operator should provide you with all the equipment and information necessary for you to have a safe trip. Gráfico 7. If your want to know other places and go further don t worry, you can hire a trekking tour from Baños from one to several days to: Los Altares, Carihuarazo, Chimborazo. Gráfico 8. 18 Fuente: Kayaking It s practiced in several rivers of the surrounding areas. In the parish is of Rio Negro or Rio Topo the rivers are considered by some experts as one of the best in the world for this sport. Gráfico 10. 19 Fuente: Mountain Hike From Baños you can hire different tours to visit the mountains and volcanos of Ecuador. It is not recommended to do any of them on your own. Gráfico 12. Mountain hike Fuente: The Tree House An image of a man swinging the Tungurahua volcano background erupting, was the winner (of a mention) 2014 Traveler Photo Contest organized by National Geographic. The photograph was taken at The Tree House in Baños (Ecuador) by Sean Hacker Teper on February 1, 2014 as stated in the description of it. Minutes after catching the people who were around the towering activity had to be evacuated. It s a simple swing a piece of wood tied on opposite ends with a rope attached to the tree. Aptly called the Swing at the End of the World, it arches you into infinite space, beyond the edge of the cliff thousands of feet above ground, and without even a safety belt to keep you on. 20 Fuente: Tungurahua Volcano For those people who likes hiking and mountain biking we recommend a day trip to the refuge of the Tungurahua stratovolcano Summit elevation 5023 meters. Its name comes from the language Quichua meaning Little Hell because of its recent volcanic activity, is characterized by its almost perfect cone. At its feet is the city of Baños and its activity has again generated fear among the citizens who live around it. Gráfico 14. Tungurahua Volcano Fuente: Miguel Rodríguez Actually Tungurahua volcano it is in eruptive phase, with a (pre-eruption) elevation of 5020 m., Tungurahua is Ecuador s 10th- highest peak. It was a beautiful, cone- shaped volcano, with a small cap of snow perched jauntily atop its lush, green slopes. Since the many eruptions beginning in late 1999, much of the snow has melted, and the cone and crates have changed in shape. Until 1999, many travelers liked to walk part of the way up the volcano, perhaps as far as the village of Pondoa, or to the (now destroyed) refuge, at 3800m. Beyond the considere done of Ecuador s easier 5000m peaks to climb. It will be probably be many 8

21 months before it becomes stable e3nough to clim again. As of early 2003 oeioke were ascending as far as the refuge, although this is risky at best and therefore not advised Pailón del diablo waterfall One of the most impressive sights along the way is the Rio Verde waterfalls, which are near the village of Rio Verde, about 20km east of Baños city. You have to walk down a short trail to a suspension brigde to appreciate the waterfall properly. Ther is a sign at the beginning of the trail that reads Pailón del Diablo with a drop of 50 meters. Pailón del Diablo waterfall Fuente: Swing Condor Flight Is one of the many tourists that arrive at the new tourist attraction of extreme sport in Baños de Agua Santa: "The flight of the condor". They are two swings, one of 12 meters long and the largest, 20 meters, which will be premiered for the carnival holiday. They are built on the canyon of Ulba, 600 meters deep. El Vuelo del Cóndor will certainly be the new highlight from Baños. You find it before reaching the Tree House where there is another swing, but not as exciting as this one. The Flight of the Condor has enough security (full body harness, helmets, and extra rope), to make you feel how the condors take off from their nest. 9

Chimborazo province Chimborazo is a province of intense history the Puruhá dynasty, whose leaders the Duchicelas, were surrounded by diverse towns like Guanos, Pallatangas, Calpies, Lausies, Achupañllas, Liribambas. With the Spanish conquest Diego de Almagro provisionally founded the city of Santiago de Quito, in 1534 in the plain of Ricpamba, once he moved to Quito, the Spaniards who remained began to call the Riobamba site. The 9 of July of 1575 was founded by Antonio de Rivera and Rui Días with the name of San Pedro Apostle of Riobamba. After the earthquake of 1797 was transferred to the plain of Tapi or Rayobamba, but it is only in 1799 that they move to that place after the direct intervention of Baron de Carondelet. On one side is the Chanchán River, to the south of the province, which receives the waters of the Chunchi, Guasuntos, Sibambe and Zula rivers, and empties into the Chimbo River. On the other hand, the river Chambo, which runs the province from south to north, feeds on the rivers Blanco, Chibunga, Guamote, Pulucate, San Juan and Sicalpa, and joins the Patate to form the Pastaza. The hydrography of the province is complemented by two lake complexes of importance, Ozogoche, formed by several lagoons that give origin to the river Chambo, and Atillo in the Guamote Canton. Another important lagoon is the one of Colta, that is characterized by having abundant vegetation of totoras. 11

Map of Chimborazo province Fuente: Adventure tourism in Chimborazo province is an activity that is taking more and more momentum, there are trekking, climbing, biking, hiking in protected areas such as the Chimborazo Wildlife Refuge, Sangay National Park and Parishes with culture and exquisite gastronomy like Guano, Chambo, San Andrés among others that offer a wide tourist range for the delight of the visitor and traveler Riobamba city Capital of the province it is 188 km. to the south of Quito, has inhabitants and is called Sultana de los Andes. Its name comes from the Quichua word Rispamba. On August 15th, 1534 the Spanish foundation of the city of Riobamaba took place by Sebastian de Benalcázar who baptized it as Santiago de Quito in the Liribamba plain; according to some historians this it would be the date of the first foundation of Quito city. It is surrounded by grandiose swony mountains that seem to forma a beautiful crown. The Riobamba Canton is located in the Sierra Centro area, south of the Capital of the Republic. At the co-ordinates at an altitude of 2754m.r.n.m. with an area of 2,900 hectares of urban area. The climate of the city is temperate dry with variations towards the cold at night, the average annual temperature is 13.4ºC, has an average precipitation of mm. A delight for tourists is undoubtedly the historical center of the city, has been declared Cultural Patrimony of Ecuador its houses and buildings in neoclassical and eclectic style. 12

25 Riobamba city is famous due to of its illustrious citizens that have highlighted in the national history, such as Pedro Vicente Maldonado, Father Juan de Velasco, Gaspar de Villaroel, Isabel de Godín, amog others. The city offers many attractives places to visit, as Didactic Museum of the Convent of la Concepción, the Museum of the Central Banck, the Cathedral, San Antonio Church, The Basilica and La Merced. Main Square of Riobamba Fuente: When you walk through Riobamba city don t forget to visit its markets and taste the famous hornado and its natural juices with the ice of the Chimborazo volcano in la Merced market. The city is part of two of the most important natural icons, such as The Fauna Reserve and Sangay National Park. One of the most unforgettable 13

26 experiences is the train journey, starting its journey at the railway station, which is now in the process of rebuilding, and undoubtedly is an important part of our history Guano Guano is a beautiful valley, at the foot of the southern slopes of Igualata, has gained international fame thanks to its carpets and among Ecuadorians is known for the industriousness of its people. Guano is also the seat of ancient cultures. There several archaeologists and researchers have found traces of thousands of years ago. Gráfico 22. Guano town Fuente: City cradle of great craftsmanship and work in the province for the tireless work of its people, it is known as the CAPITAL ARTESANAL AND TOURISM OF ECUADOR. It is located in the Central Sierra of the country north of the province of Chimborazo 8 km from the City of Riobamba at an altitude of 2720 m.s.n.m Cultural Museum of the Llama Where you can know the characteristics of the Andean camelids, especially the llama, known as the Queen of the Andes. The museum provides illustrative information about its origin, evolution, medicinal use and economic use, as well as the important relationship of this species within the worldview and Andean culture. Later on we visit the Craft Center where there are numerous products made with fiber from llamas, works that are carried out by a group of women from the organization Nuevo Milenio. Among the great variety of handicrafts are sacks, hats, scarves, coats, gloves and bags of different colors, sizes and models. Other products are also found, such 14

In the first you can find native fauna and flora, listen to the history of the 'Enchanted Stone' and know the place where the oldest hacienda in the area was located and place that was resting for several times by Simon Bolivar. In the second, which lasts approximately 40 minutes, in addition to knowing the native flora and fauna, on clear days you can have a privileged view of the majestic Chimborazo and other great Andean peaks, such as Carihuairazo, Tungurahua, Altar and Sangay. The gastronomy of the place is made available to tourists in the community restaurant, where you can appreciate and taste exquisite typical dishes prepared with quinoa and the specialty of the house: llama meat, considered a very healthy food for its high levels of proteins and low percentages of cholesterol and fat. Among the dishes made with llama meat, there are chops, lasagne, dry and fried, the latter that is the most desired dish by the diners, all with a rich flavor that delights the palate of consumers. The food is accompanied with glasses of quinua and jora chicha. For dessert, sweet pumpkin visitors are served Urbina It is the highest railroad station of Ecuador in the province of Chimborazo. It is located at meters above sea level. From there, hikers can develop the famous 'hieleros walk' on the climb to Chimborazo considerad, the highest mountain. One of the attractions is the visit to the community of Pulingui- San Pablo and its interpretation center WAMANWAY from there is accessed a polylepis forest Bike Tours There are many options to cycle around the Chimborazo province and more unforgetable experience around Chimborazo volcano, the most popular one is a bike route since 4800m until 3000m inside the Chimborazo Reserve. When you hire a bike please check that it is in perfect conditions, the tour operator should provide you with all the equipment and information necessary for you to have a safe trip, and to avoid disastrous accidents. Other beautiful route to biking or cycling is since the entrance of Chimborazo Reserve in direction to San Juan town, or Urbina where possible look is the landscape and many times meet vicuñas, one of the camelids of Ecuador Mountain Hike From the refuge of Chimborazo volcano toward the population of Urbina or San Juan a route of a lot or fame exists, so that lovers of this sport can descend by bicycle enjoying a spectacular Andean landscape Trekking Several paths allow you to hike inside of Chimborazo province, many of them extremely demanding, but that allow to appreciate the wonderful natural scenery of landscapes with an ecosystem of Páramo and mountain and constitute its characteristic appeal. It is advisable to always carry out with the company of specialized guides because the changing weather and the fog can easily confuse the travelers. Thermals waters of Guayllabamba The pools are at thirty minutes from Chambo and are famous for their waters with healthy properties Horseback riding High-altitude horseback riding around the rocky lunar landscape of the Chimborazo highlands is guaranteed to give you an unforgettable experience. The horses were in good spirits as were we when we set out again early in the morning. We took in the beautiful scenery and the wonderful cool weather. At 08:00am the first stop was a viewpoint to see a beautiful landscape of south and center of Quito At 09:00am we stop in Pappa Restaurant where was our breakfast in Lasso town, then we continue the same highway as far as Salcedo toll to pass through Patate valley and to be able to observe a magnificent landscape of plants and trees for example tomate de arbol or tree tomato, tandarins, avocados, etc. At 11:00am we passed Baños city in an easterly direction as far as Rio Blanco where we practice extreme sports in our case canopy and Tibetan bridge, then we continue as far as La Closerie de Lilas where our lunch was. At 13:30pm to end the adventure sports in Tungurahua province we continue in south direction as far as "el vuelo del condor" swing, continuing slowly with the rout, we arrive to Riobamba city at 17:30pm. 24

37 At 17:40 pm, we arrive to El Tren Dorado Hotel, where we would rest. The pax were very understanding of the situation, and I suggested try the visit of Riobamba city the next day, before continuing to Urbina. Day 2 At 19:30pm we had dinner in Andaluza Restaurant. Punctual breakfast at 7:30 am. At 8:15am we walked around Riobamba City, the first stop was the train station where possible look was many old thing about the history of Ecuadorian railroad. Then visited the old city of Riobamba We ate a delicious traditional dish hornado and juice with ice of Chimborazo volcano in la Merced market at 9:15am. Arrival to Urbina Station at 10:30 pm in time for horseback riding around two hours. At 12:30 we ate another typical dish in this case it was guinea pig. Arrival to Quito at 17:00 All the way from Quito to the final destination to Urbina station, in Chimborazo province was great. We had a wonderful time and we could observe on the way the impressive landscape of the Avenue of the volcanoes... CHAPTER V 25

39 CHAPTER VI CONCLUSIONS The tourists were impressed by the variety of adventure sports and more with the adventure sports that we practiced like: Tibeth Bridge, canopy, "el vuelo del condor" swing in Tungurahua province, and horseback riding in Chimborazo province. The tourists were impressed by the variety of typical food and the colourful market where we visited, specially the La Merced Market, where they tried the backed pork (hornado) which was served with a delicious "naranjilla juice" with ice brought from the Chimborazo glaciers,. The guinea pig, was another typical dish they tried, and they loved it... RECOMMENDATIONS If you really want to feel the adventure spirit in Ecuador, you must visit the Tungurahua and Chimborazo provinces, they have everything that you can expect, either for the beautiful landscape and or the wonderful people you could meet. I sincerely hope that this work may serve as a guide for people who want to visit these incredible places of the Ecuador. 27
