2 highlight AROMA OF CHRISTMAS IS ALL AROUND! Throughout the month of December, there are many good reasons to go out and celebrate Christmas. Early in the month, the displays at: Madeira s Regional Archives: Christmas memories, in Funchal and the Traditional Nativity and Christmas Cribs, in Câmara de Lobos, officially open the season s exhibitions cycle. Other events combining traditional Christmas gastronomy with the greatest symbol of the festivity, the Christmas crib: Sugar-cane honey flavour: Madeiran confectionery, worth paying a visit, also at the Municipal Library of Câmara de Lobos, the House-Museum Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas, in Funchal, with the exhibit The Christmas at the House of the Calçada, the Madeira Ethnographic Museum, in Ribeira Brava, with its Traditional Madeiran Christmas Cribs, and in Santana, another opportunity to admire Nativity Scenes from all over the World from a private collection. Beyond all these celebrations, are also held live and outdoors exhibitions all over the archipelago, illustrating what we do best during this special period, the so-called Festa, reliving memories, traditions and identity. 9 CLASSIC SOUNDS CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR S Classical music is in the limelight during this festive season with several concerts performances in the most different venues, mainly concentrated in the city of Funchal. In addition to the traditional concerts around the Christmas and New Year s theme, organized by many institutions, stands out the 20 th Anniversary Concert of the Associação Amigos do Conservatório de Música da Madeira in partnership with the Associação Notas e Sinfonias Atlânticas. The event is held at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre, also with the participation of Madeira s Classical Orchestra, conducted by maestro Pedro Neves. Still, during the months of December and January many are the available options in opposition to classical music. Noteworthy is the 1 st Edtition of Madeira Winter Festival, welcoming at Madeira Tecnopolo a fusion of musical types, with Joana Machado s jazz, fado with Carminho, melodic death metal with the Madeiran groups such as: Karnak Seti and Calamity Islet, and gothic metal by the well-known Portuguese music band Moonspell. music / dance 9

11 CHRISTMAS IN FUNCHAL Traditionally, every year the Orfeão Madeirense organizes the Funchal s Choir Festival, which is held in the last week of December. In 2013 the event will have five local guest choir groups. Already in its 16 th Edition the festival will take place on the 27 th, 29 th and 30 th of December, in Funchal s Cathedral and Colégio Church, offering to all of those who may attend, an opportunity to listen and enjoy choral music, always seeking to promote the work developed throughout the years in Madeira Archipelago. music / dance 11

15 CHRISTMAS FOR THE YOUNGER ONES Christmas is not Christmas without children! And it s precisely thinking about this younger but quite demanding audience that several initiatives are organized in order to preserve the spirit and magic of Christmas alive. There offers are quite diversified, from workshops, storytelling, ballet, theatre performances and exhibitions. The Quinta das Cruzes Museum (MQC) opened the celebrations with the activity Christmas at the MQC, in the end of November. However, Christmas may still be experienced in Madeira s Regional Public Library, House-Museum Frederico de Freitas, Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre, accompanied by Snow White or in a Mission (Im)possible with the Theatre group - Teatro Experimental do Funchal.
