It is quite important for FPN to organise this event since paraswimming is now under our responsibility, and for us it is crucial to spread and promote the values of equality and swimming for all. 4 FUNCHAL MADEIRA ISLAND The capital of the archipelago is the city of Funchal, which takes its name from the Portuguese word for fennel (funcho), the wild herb that grew here abundantly at the time of the first settlers. This city has around 150,000 residents and is also the most populated city in Portugal, apart from mainland. The Euro ( ) is the currency that is used in Funchal. If you are from the UK, US or any other country, you will need to change your money before coming to Funchal. You can also change money at your point of entry into Portugal. Another option is to use your ATM card to withdraw money. Funchal enjoys excellent weather. The maximum temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is around 19 degrees Celsius. In other words, this is a fine all-year-round destination. 3

6 P E N T E A D A O LY M P I C S W I M M I N G P O O L S C O M P L E X The Penteada Olympic Pools Complex, was Inaugurated on September 25, 2004, is considered by experts of swimming as one of the most modern and sophisticated of the country at an European level. This grandiose infrastructure located in the heart of Funchal, possessing an huge area of approximately 19,500 square meters of construction, distributed over five floors, with one basement. Xavier Gonzalez, IPC Chief Executive Officer, said: Madeira will provide a beautiful setting for the Championships and the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada is an incredibly impressive, sophisticated venue considered to be one of the best in Europe. 5

7 30TH OF APRIL TO 7TH OF MAY 2016 The complex is set over an impressive five floors and includes an Olympic sized competition pool, a diving pool, a 25m pool and a training pool. We expect around 450 athletes from 50 countries to compete in Funchal 2016 from 30th of April to 7th of May, which is an Open Championships to ensure swimmers have as many opportunities as possible to qualify for Rio Xavier Gonzalez, IPC Chief Executive Officer, said: We expect the European Open to be the perfect curtain-raiser for Rio as athletes attempt to secure the last qualification spots just four months out, and will be a good indicator of form for those who have already booked their places. 6

10 ACCOMMODATION PLAN For the 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships in Funchal, the Portuguese Swimming Federation in partnership with Inter Tours Travel Consulting, selected the accommodation options which will serve the requirements for the competition in the most suitable way: accessibility for the athletes, proximity to the competition venue and a central location in the city providing the easy access and transportation for all people involved. Madeira has excellent accommodation facilities for all tastes. From classic to ultra-modern hotels, quality and first class service are a tradition in this archipelago.
