21 Plaza Neighborhood of de Mayo Eating Café Tortoni 1The oldest coffeehouse in Argentina and the most emblematic of Buenos Aires, Café Tortoni has wonderful coffees and desserts, as well as tango shows every night. Sights Madres de Plaza 2 de Mayo Long the focal point of political life in Buenos Aires, Plaza de Mayo s current name commemorates the May revolution that started the country s process towards independence from Spain in More recently, the plaza has been a marching point for the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, a movement of women (mothers and grandmothers) to demonstrate defiance against the dictatorial government of the 1970 s s. Sights LA BOCA Also known as Caminitos, La Boca is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. By the late 1800 s, La Boca was the main harbor and place where all immigrants had their first homes, and stories say that the tango was born there, where prostitutes, the mafia, sailors, and workers used to live. The most famous street, Caminito, is the soul of the neighborhood with couples dancing milonga, tango singers, artists, shops, street fairs, and more. Very lively during weekends, La Boca is best described as seedy after dark so it s advisable to take taxis to and from your destination.
