Today drive to Ubud where artisans display their expertise in painting, sculpture, silverworking, and batik. Enjoy time to visit some of the countless galleries and artisan workshops. This evening continue to Benoa and embark the Clipper Odyssey. (B, L, D) Wednesday, February 27 SATONDA ISLAND / SUMBAWA ISLAND Zodiacs bring you to the shores of uninhabited Satonda, a small circular island that is an ancient volcanic cone. Enjoy your first snorkeling or diving excursion over enchanting reefs here. Or join our naturalists on a hike to view the island s interior sacred lake. After lunch on board, visit Sumbawa Island. Local villagers greet you with traditional drumming, dances, and a mock wedding ceremony. You will also watch a pole-climbing competition where agile young boys climb up a tall coconut palm pole in a race to see who can reach the prize at the top. (B, L, D) Thursday, February 28 KOMODO ISLAND Komodo Island National Park is a sanctuary for the fabled giant monitor lizard, the Komodo dragon. A guided walk along a forested pathway leads you to a viewing area to look for these enormous reptiles, which grow up to 10 feet in length and weigh up to 300 pounds. The surrounding forest is home to Javan rusa deer (the favorite prey of the dragons),, as well as yellow-crested cockatoos, friarbirds, and megapodes. In the afternoon enjoy snorkeling or diving off lovely Pink Beach, often likened to swimming in an aquarium. (B, L, D) Friday, March 1 TIGER ISLANDS Beautiful, warm waters encircle the Tiger Islands where you make a morning stop to snorkel or dive over kaleidoscopic reefs, home to angelfish, fairy basslets, and butterflyfish among hundreds of other species. 5 Saturday & Sunday, March 2 & 3 PALOPO / TORAJA, SULAWESI ISLAND A full-day overland excursion takes you 4,000 feet into the cool highlands of South Sulawesi to fascinating Toraja. Legends say that the early Torajans came from the north, possibly Indochina, and were blown offcourse by a storm. Their boat-shaped houses reflect this seafaring legacy, with a soaring prow that slopes skyward. The Toraja bury their dead in graves chiseled into vertical cliffsides, in keeping with the belief that ancestors repose halfway between heaven and Earth. Beside these honeycombed graves, gazing out over the valleys are life-like wooden effigies, providing a receptacle for their souls to guard the gravesites. Walk through several villages and investigate the gravesites, markets, and ornate rice barns of the region. Meals and overnight are at our hotel. The following day, tour more traditional villages as we return to Palopo, reuniting with the Clipper Odyssey in the evening. (B, L, D) Monday, March 4 BUTON ISLAND Dangling off the southeast coast of Sulawesi, Buton is part of the Wakatobi Island group. Your snorkel or dive excursions today reveal an incredible array of marine reef inhabitants, and underwater photographers discover a bizarre macro world among corals as shallow as 20 feet. Highlights could include colorful frogfish, octopus, marbled snake eels, cockatoo waspfish, flying gurnards, multitudes of crab species, and anemones. (B, L, D) Tuesday, March 5 PADEA BESAR Colorful reefs and atolls offer further underwater landscapes to explore today. If the opportunity presents itself, you may go ashore to visit a local village. (B, L, D) Wednesday, March 6 BANGGAI ISLANDS Just below the arm of Central Sulawesi, at the convergence of the Banda and Maluku seas, sit the 120 Banggai Islands whose waters harbor the mother of all living coral reefs according to Alfred Wallace, a contemporary of Darwin. An astounding variety of marine life inhabits the walls, caves, overhangs, and shallow reefs of this archipelago and snorkelers, and divers have several opportunities to search for such species as ribbon eels, blue-ring octopus, anglerfish, and the endemic Banggai cardinal fish. (B, L, D) Thursday & Friday, March 7 & 8 TOGEAN ISLANDS Explore the remote and picturesque Togeans, a 56-island archipelago surrounded by an Jonathan Rossouw Giovanna Fasanelli Holly Faithfull FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER FOR THIS TRIP, PLEASE CONTACT THE WWF TRAVEL PROGR

Volcanic and covered in lush foliage, the islands harbor a variety of endangered wildlife, including Togean macaques, babirusa, and hanging parrots. Beaches are the breeding grounds of the hawksbill turtles and the rare dugong, and diving and snorkeling forays reveal spectacular corals teeming with colorful fish. Several ethnic groups reside in 37 villages throughout the Togeans, and during your visit you will meet locals and enjoy guided walks to search for the amazing variety of birds and wildlife that reside here. (B, L, D) Saturday, March 9 LAHAGA ISLAND / BITUNG / TANGKOKO NATURE RESERVE Spend the morning snorkeling from the lovely beach of Lahaga Island. Its 21,000 acres are among the last habitats for crested black macaques and cuscus, a lemur-like, slowmoving possum. Or tour Bitung and its private wildlife center to view tarsiers, the world s smallest primate. The reserve is also a haven for an incredible variety of birds, including the endemic Sulawesi hornbill, varied lorikeet, blue-breasted pitas, and the finch-billed myna. (B, L, D) Sunday, March 10 BUNAKEN NATIONAL MARINE PARK / MANADO The phenomenal biodiversity of Bunaken a key locale for WWF s work in the region has been protected as a national park since 1991 and its crystal-clear waters offer some of the best snorkeling and diving in Indonesia. Spend the day here, exploring the reefs and drop-off walls adorned with myriad soft corals. Blue-striped and yellow-tailed fusiliers are among the many species of fish you may spot here. You are escorted ashore, where enthusiastic welcomes await. A walk along elevated wooden boardwalks leads to a cathedral with superb carvings, and the museum with displays of ancestor poles, drums, body masks, shields, daggers, and skulls, a reminder that cannibalism was practiced by the ancestors of some villagers. Asmat woodcarvings are known for their powerful lines and coarse, expressive motifs and are widely considered by collectors and scholars to be among the world s finest. With our anthropologist helping you to communicate, you have the opportunity to purchase carvings directly from village artisans. (B, L, D) Sunday, March 24 THURSDAY ISLAND, AUSTRALIA Australia s northernmost point, Thursday Island lies in the strategic Torres Strait. Settled in the late 19th century, its early fame rested on pearling by Japanese fishermen. During WWII, Australian and American troops were stationed at the base here. Explore the small sleepy town and take in the sweeping view from Green Hill Fort, built in 1893, then return to the ship for lunch. There is free time this afternoon to explore on your own. 13 WWF at Work The Coral Triangle spanning Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste has seen recent dramatic human population growth and development. As a result, unsustainable coastal development has increased, as has the demand for tuna, shark fins, turtle products and live reef fish. For more than 20 years, WWF has worked to address the challenges facing the Coral Triangle. Among the issues we work on are overfishing and illegal fishing, effective management of marine protected areas, regulations protecting marine turtles and their habitats and the impact of climate change on coral reefs. We plan to reach the following targets by 2020: A 50 percent increase in area of priority coral reef habitats that is protected and sustainably managed with effective financing in place; Zero decline in the populations of three endangered marine turtle species (leatherback, hawksbill, green) from 2008 levels. Halting and reversing the degradation of key marine resources coral reef habitats, turtles, reef fish, and tuna.
