1 The network of protected areas in Lithuania Restoration and management of Natura 2000 territories Grasslands and meadows in Salantai Regional Park Protected areas in Lithuania occupies 15,71% of the territory in the entire country: National parks - 5, who make up 14% of the total protected areas Regional parks - 30, who make up 44% of all protected areas Salantai Regional Park Directorate Project manager and Head specialist (the ecologist) Asta Bagočienė Regional park of Salantai The main values of the park: valleys, rivers, boulder areas, stones all this landscape was formed by the last glacier in The project The Management of Protected areas(i stage) of The State Protected Areas Service under The Ministry of Environment was implemented in years. In the scope of the project the management works have been done in 81 ha of Natura 2000 territories: psci Kulalių riedulynas 22 ha psci Šventosios upės slėnis ties Margininkais 31 ha SPA Erlos ir Salanto upių senslėniai 28 ha 4030 European dry heaths (3 ha), 5130 Juniperus communis formations on heaths or calcareous grasslands (6 ha), 6230* Species-rich Nardus grasslands, on siliceous substrates in mountain areas (and submountain areas, in Continental Europe (1 ha), 6410 Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils (Molinion caeruleae) (3 ha) The area of management 22 ha What have been done?: Restore the open shrub and grassland habitats of European Importance by cutting and removing shrubs and trees of low value Maintain and improve typical habitats structure and species composition by mowing grass and growth. Set the conditions for public to learn about habitats of Natura 2000 areas and their protection methods and measures by builting informations stands 2010 winter 1

It s a natural area of 79 ha, where stands boulders of 0,3, even 3 metres in diameter, that rolled in from Scandinavia. is unfamiliar to our land (or country), primeval, reminiscent of tundra, landscape. 5 Habitat types of Community interest in 4030 European dry heaths 10 ha, 5130 Juniperus communis formations on heaths or calcareous grasslands 52 ha, 6230* Species-rich Nardus grasslands, on siliceous substrates in mountain areas (and submountain areas, in Continental Europe) 2 ha, 6410 Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayeysilt-laden soils (Molinion caeruleae) 2 ha The main activities of LIFE+ project in : cut down and remove bushes of low value in area of 40 ha; install a 2500 m long stockyard fence; build up 1 information stand, 1 observation tower, 4 pedestrian stairways over the fence, wooden footpath (300 m), 2 feeders, 1 animal shed; breed a moufflon herd of approximately 20 animals; organise seminars, meetings, public presentations for community, presenting the activities of the project prepare and publish informational publications, create a website that would be active during the project, also to publish articles in local and national press; carry out the monitoring, evaluation and documentation of the impact of management measures for regeneration of habitats and population of rare plant species.
