2 Jose Cuervo La Rojeña Distillery Tour During my 4 day visit to Guadalajara, we went to one of Mexico's Pueblo Magicos Mexico's Pueblo Magicos, the town of Tequila, where we visited La Rojeña, the oldest distillery in the Americas. During the tour, we saw a big pile of agave plants being loaded into the ovens to be cooked. The various stops through the distillery and barrel stocked aging halls are well choreographed. Our guide was super charming and knowledgeable. Aside from learning the process of making Tequila, the highlight was of course the tasting of blanco, reposado and añejo tequilas at the very end, which was unusual and quite surprising in its approach. I'll definitely enjoy the flavors and aromas of Tequila a bit more educated in the future. Monday to Sunday: 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00 hrs. 4 Indigenous Art Made by Master Artisans Del Corazón de la Tierra (Heart of the Earth), was my favorite store in Tlaquepaque. It has a great vibe, lovely helpful staff and a beautiful array of authentic, higher end pieces (furniture, table top, clothes). The space consists of individual rooms, each curated a little differently. Sometimes you can find artisans and. in this case one of the high shamans, a Marakame of the Huicholes, selling their own creations there. It's not a place to find low cost keepsakes, but one of a kind works and quality merchandise that tap into centuries of indigenous craftsmanship. 6 Cazuela con Tequila at El Parian Just a few steps from Del Corazon de la Tierra, you'll find a courtyard filled with restaurants. At one of them, Peco's, we learned to make ourselves a delicious Cazuela con Tequila, a typical Jalisco cocktail. This one is easy. We squeezed a bunch of citrus fruit (orange, lime and lemon) over ice into our individual cazuelas (small clay dishes usually used for food), then added a shot of tequila, and, depending on taste and required alcohol strength, about half a bottle of Squirt (apparently that's very important, so don't substitute). The result was delightful, and what's not to love about a drink, you'll actually remember how to make afterwards! 8 Mexican Rodeo! One of the most incredible and authentic experiences in Guadalajara was visiting one of the oldest arenas for charros Mexican cowboys, and -girls, horsemen and - women, dedicated to the art of working with horses and kettle. Every Sunday at noon, a 2-3 hour rodeo gets underway. It's a local affair and you won't find many foreign visitors among the spectators. Its a fast paced show of horsemanship, roping cows and horses, girls riding formation,...the real deal. There are tons of families in the audience, and you'll kids in full-on charro outfits. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared Charrería an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity* in 2016, deeming this traditional practice an important element of the identity and cultural heritage of Mexico. (These are traditions or living expressions which are passed down through generations in the form of oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, or knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe.) 10 Hospicio Cabañas - Art & Space The Hospicio Cabañas was built early in the 19th century to cater to orphans, handicapped and old people. The buildings mostly form a low complex, with many connected inside and outside spaces. The only tall structure, the chapel with its vaulted ceilings, houses the incredible murals of José Clemente Orozco. Not surprisingly, the Hospicio Cabaña has been a Unesco World Heritage site isince It's a place to marvel at architecture, and use of space. The ground level structures combine courtyards and interior spaces seamlessly. I loved just walking around and discovering all of it. The Hospicio is reflective of its own history, but also makes ample room for cutting edge contemporary art. 12 Hueso (Bone) Restaurant Feast for the Senses It's been a while since I walked into a space that so completely blew me away. Hueso, housed in a refurbished 1940s building in the beautiful Lafayette Design District in Guadalajara, Jalisco, is one of the most inventive, creative and artful restaurants you'll set foot in. It's a family project, designed by Cadena + Asociados, for the principal's brother, chef Alfonso Cadena. Over 10,000 bleached bones, chalk white painted kitchen utensils, and drawings adorn the walls in rich, monochromatic texture. There's no sign outside, except for a metal bone suspended over the entrance. Large communal tables and chairs made of pale wood, make up the remainder of the dining area. And of course there's an open kitchen where you can watch all the action real-time. The food is light on the vegetarian side (shocker, right?). You can find some unusual items on the menu, such as bone marrow, or goat. Some of the dishes are huge, and meant to be shared. Ingredients are sourced locally where possible, and of course seasonal, which makes for frequent menu changes. 14 Life is Sweet at Postreria Breakfast at Postreria is precious. We went to experience their spectacular line-up of baked magic (mini scones, fruit tarts, macaroons in unusual flavor combinations), and stunning, beautifully created desserts. For the less gluttonous, there are plenty of hearty, savory choices available, too. You can tell Postreria is a work of hard work, love and passion. Not surprisingly, one of the creators, Jesús Escalera Ciscares, has a serious background in Michelin star restaurants, including ElBulli hotel (2 Michelin stars), Casa Marcelo (1 Michelin star), The Fat Duck (3 Michelin stars) and the legendary elbulli restaurant (3 Michelin stars). If you need to add a little fairy dust sprinkled into your day, this is the place to linger for a bit. If you're on the go, or need to pick up a special dessert for dinner, there's a display case right at the entrance, that always has a line of people salivating over ; ) Postreria also conducts baking/cooking classes. 16 Don't Miss the Hilarious Mahem of Lucha Libre On our last night in town, we made it to the Arena Coliseo de Guadalajara, for Mexico's own version of freestyle wrestling Lucha Libre! Lucha Libre is similar to America's WWE, but, and I know this is hard to believe...even more insane. Wrestlers wear dramatic outfits and masks, the fights are impressive and sometimes, the luchadores will even launch themselves high up into the air to smother their much 'hated' opponents. The noise level is unbelievable as the rowdy fans jump out of their chairs to hackle each other, and of course the wrestlers. It's complete and utter mayhem, and I absolutely loved it. Fighting nights are Tuesdays and Sundays. Tickets cost around pesos, and can be purchased through ticketmaster, or at the arena. 18 Museum of Ceramics, Tlaquepaque Visiting Tlaquepaque is all about arts and crafts. Don't miss stepping into the Museo Regional de la Cerámica (Regional Ceramic Museum). It was founded in the 50s to preserve and promote indigenous ceramics from Jalisco, specifically the areas of Tonalá, Santa Cruz de las Huertas, El Rosario, Tlaquepaque, Zalatitlán and Tateposco. The works of Candelario Medrano ( ), one of the artists exhibited, were the most interesting to me. Medrano's most known designs are the naguales, depicting a mythical being of a human that takes animal form (two of which appear in the slides above). One of Medrano's grandsons, Juan José Ramos Medrano still creates incredibly imaginative works in a similar style today. 20 Breakfast at Tras Fondas When you're in Guadalajara, treat yourself to a meal at Tras Fonda, a recent addition to chef Francisco Ruano's killer line-up of restaurants. We popped in for breakfast and worked our way through an incredible line-up of Enmoladas, Huevo con Machaca, Chilaquiles Rojos o Verdes, Molletes Clásico, Vegetario, or de la Casa, Huevos al Gusto con Guarnición de Frijoles. Everything was prepared with the simple focus to make the carefully sourced, in-season ingredients shine and explode your taste buds. Francisco Ruano's food is art. If you're into food that hasn't been 'touched too much', this is your place!
