FONATUR is a parastatal entity created in 1974 as a public trust. Its mission is to be the strategic axis for the development of sustainable tourism investment in Mexico.

4 FONATUR: a) Identifies territorial reserves that possess touristic potential; b) Develops master plans for individual or integral projects; c) Builds the required basic infrastructure and touristic services; d) Provides maintenance for public spaces; and e) Operates business units.
