1 BMS2018 Swim for Tomorrow- The first International Symposium for Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming was held in 1970, and this 13th conference is the first BMS symposium to be held in Asia. First of all, as the president of Japanese Society of Sciences in Swimming and Water Exercise (SWEX), I would like to express my sincere gratitude for BMS2018 organising committee members for their remarkable commitment and cooperation. In BMS symposiums, Past, Present, and Future has always been important keywords. Similarly, Bridge the gap has been an essential phrase among sports scientists who are aiming to contribute to training, coaching, and teaching in an aquatic environment. At this BMS2018, we set Swimming for Tomorrow as a slogan of the Congress, hoping the symposium to be a new bridge between scientific theory and practice for the future of swimming. In 1997, we established SWEX, which is modelled after BMS, and organised the first SWEX congress in that year. Since then, we have been organising a national SWEX symposium every year, and we have published 21 volumes of our journal Japanese Journal of Sciences in Swimming and Water Exercise so far. I genuinely hope the link between BMS and SWEX will become much stronger for further contribution to swimming science, education, and coaching. Given that swimming is a lifelong sport that gives joy and delight to many people regardless of the age or disabilities, I also wish BMS group to be leading direct and indirect supports for physically or intellectually impaired people who try to overcome their impairment and enjoy physical exercises. I have joined BMS symposiums myself in 1974, 1998, 2002, and 2010, and each time, I felt the development of a universal aquatic exercise culture. In August 1974, I travelled over European countries to join the 2nd BMS symposium at Belgium, to visit swimming and water polo clubs in East/West Germany and Hungary, and to watch European championships. During the trip, I saw lots of people, including physically impaired people, babies, and elderlies, enjoying swimming in one way or another. This was due to enhanced tangible and intangible elements in those countries, and everything I saw or learnt during the whole trip positively affected my philosophy in swimming and teaching. Japan is one of the few countries that obligate all schools to have swimming classes in their physical education, which is an excellent educational system from a perspective of aquatic safety and education. However, many teachers and exercise instructors still focus only on a forward locomotion based on a perspective of the competitive swimming. This means that many people do not take aquatic exercises as more than just simple races. We, those who are working on swimming from many perspectives, need to take a role of establishing a worldwide system of aquatic education that makes human life healthier and happier and spreading leading knowledge of not only competitive swimming but also many other aquatic exercises. I firmly believe that BMS group is, and will be, the centre of the movement, and I am sure we can build many new links between the members and establish new bodies of knowledge that contribute to the future of swimming and aquatic activities through this 13th BMS symposium. President of Japanese Society of Sciences in Swimming and Water Exercise (SWEX) Toshiaki Goya 2

5 Location Outline The Most Prominent Research and Development City in Japan Our Tsukuba campus is in Tsukuba Science City, which is 60 km north of Tokyo. Tsukuba Science city was born as a national project in the 1960s, which aimed to construct the science capital' and avoid overpopulation in Tokyo by relocating national research institutes to Tsukuba. There are over 30 leading national research institutes (corresponding to approximately 30% of all national research institutes) and more than 200 private research institutes. Remarkably, about 10% of 200,000 residents in Tsukuba City are researchers! This well-planned city sustains harmony between technology and nature. A long pedestrian and bicycle roads connect our university, station, the national institutes, and many parks in the central area. We have a famous, beautifully shaped mountain with two peaks and a historical shrine - Mt. Tsukuba, which is located north of our campus. It is also called Shiho, meaning purple peaks because the mountain changes its colour many times in a day, as indigo in the morning, green in the daytime, and purple in the sunset. History Our university was established in October 1973, due to the relocation of its predecessor - Tokyo University of Education to the Tsukuba area. The University has been focusing on providing a unique, active, and internationally competitive education with superlative education and research facilities, and the university plays a significant role in research and education in Japan today. The Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences originates from the National School of Gymnastics founded in 1878, which was the oldest institute for gymnastics and physical education in Japan. The institute was combined with other educational institutes and changed its name many times until the establishment of the University of Tsukuba in The Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences has now more than 100 Full-Time research staff members consisting of professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and contracted research associates and assistants. The staff members are responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate students, and also for conducting own research projects. Many of our staff members collaborate with researchers from inside and outside the Institute for their projects, and their effort and success have been keeping the institute at the centre of the development of physical education, health and sports sciences in Japan.

Non-Smoking Policy Smoking is prohibited on campus apart from smoking areas. Please ask the staff of BMS 2018 if necessary. For Your Health and Safety Preventing Heat Stroke (

11 When the heat index is high, it's best to stay in an air-conditioned environment. If you must go outdoors, you can prevent heat stroke by taking these steps: Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or more. Drink extra fluids. To prevent dehydration, it's generally recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water, fruit juice, or vegetable juice per day. Because heat-related illness also can result from salt depletion, it may be advisable to substitute an electrolyte-rich sports drink for water during periods of extreme heat and humidity. Take additional precautions when exercising or working outdoors. The general recommendation is to drink 24 ounces of fluid two hours before exercise, and consider adding another 8 ounces of water or sports drink right before exercise. During exercise, you should consume another 8 ounces of water every 20 minutes, even if you don't feel thirsty. Reschedule or cancel outdoor activity. If possible, shift your time outdoors to the coolest times of the day, either early morning or after sunset. Evacuation sites for Art and Physical Education Area When an earthquake occurs, quickly evacuate outside when the quake stops. Evacuate to the designated outdoor sites if it seems dangerous to remain in the building you were in at the time of the earthquake. Evacuate to designated indoor evacuation sites in case of prolonged outdoor evacuation, or if it is appropriate due to rain or nightfall. (Before entering the indoor site, make sure if the building is safe enough) *Choose the safest evacuation route for yourself.
