2 Pure inspiration Engadin St. Moritz Engadin St. Moritz lies in the high, sun-blessed valley of the Engadin, bewitching visitors with its rich contrasts and southerly climate. Discover for yourself the allure of the 13 inspiring resorts especially scintillating St. Moritz, which alongside its world-famous glamour has preserved its authentic charm. At more than 90 hotels in the Upper Engadin, the Mountain railways and cableways included offer grants you free travel on the 13 cable cars, funiculars and chairlifts when you stay at least two nights. This is a great way to experience the magnificent mountains topped by mighty glaciers whether from one of the breathtaking panoramic trails, on a fascinating theme walk, or on hikes along the sparkling lakes. The extensive network of hiking trails also includes pushchair-accessible footpaths, especially suitable for families. Alternatively, you can encounter the variety and pristine beauty of the Engadin on a mountain bike tour. The 400 km (250 miles) of bike trails in the region are as thrilling for keen mountain bikers as for occasional riders and adventurous explorers and are great fun to discover on an electric bike, too. Engadin St. Moritz offers an abundance of other activities, as well: golfers, for example, can choose from four glorious courses, all with a spectacular mountain backdrop. One experience guaranteed to be unforgettable is a ride on the Rhaetian Railway perhaps along the Albula/Bernina line, which is part of UNESCO World Heritage. Just sit back in comfort and let the majestic mountain scenery glide past your panoramic window. Culture fans, too, are in for a treat here. Many artists and writers, such as the painter, Giovanni Segantini, and the philosopher-poet, Friedrich Nietzsche, have left their mark on the Engadin, enriching cultural life to this day. The fascinating museums and the historic villages with their houses built in traditional Engadin style also offer endless scope for exploration. On top of all this, you can look forward to a lively programme of top-class cultural and sporting events, along with the region s mouth-watering gastronomic variety, which can be sampled at its outstanding restaurants. In short, Engadin St. Moritz offers everything for an unforgettable holiday, whatever your budget. Let yourself be inspired by the region s variety and contrasts! Ariane Ehrat, CEO, Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation

This was followed in 1891 by the 9-hole course in today s Kulm Park. Nowadays, the region, with its outstanding and varied golf courses set against breathtaking mountain backdrops, attracts golfers from all over the world.

Every day around noon, the Maloja wind builds up to force 3 6 and only drops again at sunset. Windsurfing The play of wind on water is a sight guaranteed to set windsurfers pulses racing as they catch their first glimpse of beautiful Lake Silvaplana. A particular attraction comes in the form of stand-up paddle trips, on which you paddle in the wind-still morning across the mirror-like surface of the Engadin lakes guided or unaccompanied. Swimming Alongside the four large, well-known lakes along the main valley, the Engadin has several smaller mountain and moor lakes hidden in the forest, which invite visitors to take a refreshing dip on hot summer days such as the Lägh da Cavloc near Maloja, the Lej Nair, whose surface mirrors the massif of the Piz Corvatsch, the Lej Marsch, which lies just below the Lej Nair, the popular Lej da Staz, and the golf lakes just outside Samedan. This is characterised by low humidity and great variations in temperature between summer and winter, and between day and night. On fine days in summer, the Maloja wind begins to blow around midday and reaches speeds of 40kph (25mph), bringing a refreshing coolness and creating excellent conditions for windsurfers, sailors and glider pilots. With 320 days of sunshine a year, the valley is delightfully sun-spoilt. However, on the odd occasion that the sun does disappear behind a cloud, the Engadin still offers plenty of variety and remains true to its reputation as a holiday region abounding in things to do.

31 Unspoilt nature Page 29 Glaciers in the Engadin At about 7 km (4 miles) long, the Morteratsch Glacier is the longest in the Engadin and the tenth longest in Switzerland. About 160 years ago, during the Little Ice Age, it reached almost to where Morteratsch railway station stands today. The mighty lateral moraines piled high with rock debris, which reveal the extent of the glacier in 1850, still dominate the flanks of the valley. Captivating forests of larch and Swiss stone pine The delightful play of colours of the gnarled larch trees through the seasons is one of the most striking characteristics of the Engadin. The pale green shoots, golden pollen cones and red cone blossoms of spring give way in summer to luscious green cones and needles. In autumn, when the needles turn golden yellow, the whole valley is blanketed in gold. The Swiss stone pine, meanwhile, can grow to be 1,400 years old and is ideally adapted to the harsh winter climate. One of the oldest specimens in the Engadin stands below Muottas da Schlarigna. The Swiss stone pine can withstand temperatures ranging from +40 to 47 C (+104 to 40 F), and as a result dominates the upper limits of the mountain forests. It also has medicinal properties, for its scent has a relaxing, soothing effect on the body. 56 Page 54 Celerina CeleRINA Celerina Tourist Information CH-7505 Celerina T F celerina@estm.ch celerina Just because it has St. Moritz as a neighbour does not mean that Celerina pales into insignificance: on the contrary, the village abounds in charm, variety and sunshine. Cable cars lead from the wide expanse of the valley floor up on high to hiking heaven. Thrilling trails await mountain bikers on the Corviglia. By the Marguns summit station, families have fun at the large playground and in the natural paddling pool before heading down the mountainside via the Fairy Tale Trail or on large-wheeled scooters. Down in the valley, basking in the sunshine on a rocky spur, is the village landmark, the 14 th -century Church of San Gian. Beyond it, a path leads through wonderfully fragrant forests of larch to Lake Staz, one of the most romantic places in the whole of the Engadin. In the evenings, too, Celerina lives up to its reputation for variety sometimes with a jazz concert in an elegant hotel ballroom, or a party at a designer hotel. The Celerina New Orleans Jazz Festival is held in August, and all year round there are restaurants that serve the spirit of the Engadin in the form of mouth-watering local cuisine. 60 Page 58 Sils sils Sils Tourist Information CH-7514 Sils T F sils@estm.ch Sils is said to be a place of special energy and this can even be measured. But why bother, when you are anyway guaranteed to fall under the spell of the landscape at first sight? Writers such as Nietzsche, artists like Beuys and musicians such as David Bowie all drew inspiration from the magnificent wide-open spaces and the magical light here, and together they played a considerable role in establishing Sils as the cultural centre in the Engadin. Locals proudly describe their village as a place abounding in life force and natural earth energy, and visitors from all over the world agree. And with good reason: particularly high values on the Bovis scale the life force index can be measured here. Nestling idyllically between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana, the village lies at the gateway to the romantic Val Fex and makes the perfect base for walks through the wide, sun-drenched expanses of the Engadin valley. Visitors setting their sights higher will find an abundance of wonderfully varied hiking trails up on the mountain on Sils doorstep, the Furtschellas. One particularly impressive way of enjoying the glorious mountain scenery is by crossing Lake Sils taking advantage of Europe s highest-altitude scheduled boat service. With Samedan as a base, visitors can quickly reach all parts of the Engadin including the nearby mountain of Muottas Muragl, which boasts the most beautiful views of the wide, lake-strewn valley, as well as the first PlusEnergy hotel in the Alps. The La Senda nature trail above Samedan and the water trail on the valley floor are fascinating to follow and great fun for children, too. Mountain bikers have a variety of well-built trails to choose from, golfers can enjoy the superb 18-hole course on Samedan s doorstep, and the new Mineral Baths & Spa in the heart of the Old Town offers a wellness adventure that extends over four storeys all the way up to the rooftop. 67 Bever Page 65 BeveR Bever Tourist Information CH-7502 Bever T F bever@estm.ch bever This charming village in the heart of the high valley of the Engadin is an idyllic destination for family holidays. To interested visitors, it readily reveals its poetic secrets: its quaint gardens and deep-set windows, its bouquets of flowers adorning niches and steps, and its mighty, newly renovated church tower, which soars up into the blue sky marking the time, time that seems to pass at a more leisurely pace here than elsewhere. Bever loves to tell stories, and the most beautiful ones are to be discovered just outside the village on the Fairy Tale Trail through the Bever valley. Here, in unspoilt and evocative nature, a path leads from one fairy tale to the next, all written by women from the Engadin and brought to life with sculptures by local artists. For these stories about witches, bears and fairies, you could not find a more atmospheric setting than the enchanting Val Bever; listen carefully, locals say, and you may even hear the voice of a real gnome. Still to this day, locals are proud of the richly adorned farmhouses and the grand patrician houses dating from the 16 th and 17 th centuries such as the Chesa Merleda with its dazzling white, crenellated gable walls, the Albertini houses Biedermeier façade, and the impressive Sandoz house. Proud of course, too, of the famous restaurant, Chesa Pirani, with its baroque panelled parlour and two Michelin stars. The picturesque, sun-blessed village, framed by rugged mountain summits and fragrant pine forests, extends along the banks of the young River Inn and across the width of the Engadin valley floor. It makes an ideal base for a wide variety of tours by mountain bike or road cycle, on inline skates or on foot, along the Via Engiadina high trail, for example. The smallest village in the Engadin has just 200 inhabitants, yet it charms visitors in grand style: with its typical Engadin houses and the way in which traditional Romansh culture is part of everyday life. Madulain enjoys an idyllic location by the River Inn, facing the sun, its back turned to the stresses of modern life. Inline skaters, mountain bikers, horse riders and hikers all have a wide variety of trails to choose from. But while the village itself may not be showy, it has some impressive attractions such as the 13 th -century ruins of Guardaval, the largest castle complex in the Engadin. Or the legendary Es-cha mountain hut, which offers an unforgettable experience of the high Alps along with glorious views. It stands proudly, burnished by the sun, at the foot of the Piz Kesch; some of the region s most beautiful hikes pass by here. If you believe the entries in the visitors book, the hut fully lives up to its slogan of a haven in a storm. A visit is more impressive still in sunshine which happily is the norm here in the Engadin. These days, however, it is above all nature lovers and visitors who appreciate the traditional Engadin lifestyle who come here. For the charm of this village is to a great degree down to the 700 inhabitants, of whom no less than half speak Romansh. They live a culture that is strongly rooted in its Romanic origins, cherish their village with its unspoilt, historic core, and have a natural landscape on their doorstep so precious that it has been officially protected in grand style. Although over recent decades the hamlet at the gateway to the Swiss National Park has gained considerably in importance as a tourist destination, it has maintained a relaxed attachment to local tradition: here, the Engadin way of life is not so much celebrated as actively lived, day by day. S-chanf also lies at the entrance to the beautiful Val Trupchun, home to the greatest concentration of game animals in Europe; it is a starting point for long-distance hikes to Livigno, a stopover on the old mule trail to Davos, and the finish point of the Engadin Inline Marathon. sporthotel scaletta Comfortable sport hotel with distinctive flair and personal style. 83 General Terms and Conditions Page 81 Terms of Contract and General Conditions This brochure was compiled by the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation on behalf of, and in the name of, the service providers hotels, airlines, etc. listed therein. 01 Scope of these General Terms and Conditions These General Terms and Conditions govern the legal relationship between you and the other party/parties to your contract. If you book one of the services or packages offered by the hotels and/or other service providers directly, your contract will be with the said service provider or providers, even if you place your booking through the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation. In such cases, the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation acts as an agent only. In the case of services and packages provided by the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation in its own name, however, your contract will be with the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation. 02 Conclusion of contract and performance Only when the booking office confirms your booking without any provisions do you have a legally binding contract with the service provider. If the same booking office offers you other services and packages which are not listed in a publication of the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation, then these General Terms and Conditions shall not apply. The scope of performance in such a case will be evident from the order confirmation and the description provided. Unless stated otherwise in the description, your trip will begin at the hotel or other accommodation booked. 03 Prices and terms of payment All prices are quoted in Swiss francs. Unless otherwise agreed in your booking or in the booking confirmation, the price of your trip shall be payable in full upon booking. If the price is not paid in full by the date due, the other party to the contract shall be entitled to withhold performance, to withdraw from the contract and to demand the cancellation costs listed in No. 5. Please note that if you book your trip through a different booking office, such as a travel agent, this booking office may charge you extra to cover the costs of the services provided (consultancy, reservations, etc.). 04 Price and programme changes The service providers and the Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation are entitled to change the description of performance and prices for as long as the contract has not yet been signed. You will be informed of this in your booking. Even after the contract has been signed, prices can still be increased right up to three weeks prior to the beginning of your trip, but only if the transport or accommodation costs, the charges for certain services, or the exchange rate have increased. The price of your trip will be raised commensur ably in such a case. The programme and scope of performance may also have to be changed owing to unforeseen circumstances. Should any of the essential features of your trip change significantly and if you cannot be offered an appropriate alternative, you shall then have the right to cancel your booking. Price increases of more than 10% count as a significant change. Unforeseen and unavoidable events may necessitate a change of programme or itinerary even after your trip has commenced. Your service provider will endeavour to provide an appropriate alternative in such cases. 05 Changes or cancellations requested by you If you wish to change your booking or to cancel your trip, you must notify the booking office of this directly. Any travel documents you have already received must be returned to the booking office at the same time. A service charge of CHF 60. per person, max. CHF 120. per order, will be levied for cancellations and changes (affecting names of travellers, dates, accommodation or additional services, etc.). Please note that this charge will always be levied in the event of a change of date. If you cancel your trip or change your booking (name, date, accommodation, additional services, etc.) less than 31 days prior to your departure, you will also be liable for the following costs as a percentage of the total cost of your trip: 30 to 15 days before departure 30% of the package price; 14 to 8 days before departure 50% of the package price; 7 to 1 days before departure 80% of the package price; on the day of departure and in the event of no-show 100% of the package price; The critical date is that on which the booking office receives notice of your intentions; if that is a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the next working day shall apply. 06 Late arrival or early departure of your own accord You are responsible for arriving on time. Should you arrive late, you cannot claim a refund for any services you have missed owing to your late arrival. Should you depart early, you cannot claim a refund for the remainder of your trip. 07 Early departure or exclusion occasioned by the service provider The service provider is entitled to end the service/trip prematurely in the event of unforeseen or unavoidable circumstances such as would render its performance of contract impossible, extremely difficult or dangerous for those taking part. Should an appropriate alternative prove impossible in the event of force majeure, the service provider shall be exempted from its obligation to perform. Your claim to a refund in such cases shall be limited to unlawful enrichment only. The service provider can exclude participants from the trip if their behaviour or omissions justify such a step. In such a case, the cost of the package shall still be due in full and there shall be no refunds. Furthermore, the participants affected shall not be entitled to claim damages of any kind. 08 Liability The Engadin St. Moritz Tourism Organisation and the service provider shall be liable only for the services they themselves render and to the extent provided for by law, although they shall not be liable for negligence on their own part or on the part of their vicarious agents. There shall be no liability for valu ables, cameras, video cameras and photographic equipment, fur coats and other expensive items of clothing, mobile phones, credit cards and cash or for the unlawful use of the same. For packages, liability for anything other than personal injury shall be limited to twice the cost of the package. Here, too, the terms governing liability for valuables shall apply. Liability in all cases shall be limited to the loss or damage actually suffered. There shall be no liability for lost holiday time, frustration, etc. Extracontractual liability shall be limited to that provided for by law. 09 Travel insurance Participants are strongly urged to take out travel insurance to cover them in the event of cancellation or early departure, incl. such as might be necessitat ed by accident or sickness. 10 Applicable law and jurisdiction Swiss law shall apply to the exclusion of all others. Any disputes shall be settled in St. Moritz, Switzerland, to the exclusion of any other courts of law.

Your contractual partner is specified in the relevant entry, and is responsible for the proper provision of any services booked. Many service providers operate their own general terms of business that define contractual relations with you and specify the liability of the provider. These general terms of business are binding for you when you make a booking. Prices and services described in this brochure may be changed at any time. You will be informed about any such changes at the time of making a booking. Outdoor activities: these activities may be cancelled or broken off at any time if weather conditions or other circumstances require. You may book services direct with the relevant provider or via Engadin St. Moritz. If you book an activity via Engadin St. Moritz, the latter is dealing purely as an intermediary between you and the service provider. Your contract is direct with the provider of the service booked. In case of disagreement or any question of liability, etc., you should refer direct to the relevant service provider. Engadin St. Moritz is not your contractual partner and accepts no responsibility for provision of the service booked. Only Swiss law is applicable. Any disputes arising hereunder will be settled before a competent court of law in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Winter TOURISM FIRST came INTO BEING HERE in And NOW we ve REINVENTED IT.
