4 CORVATSCH Whoever would like to explore the scenic beauties of the Upper Engadine by foot will get their money s worth at Corvatsch. A vast number of worthwhile hikes lead from Sils, Silvaplana, St. Moritz or Pontresina towards and around the Corvatsch region. Soon enough one moves above the forest line and enjoys splendid views of glaciers and lakes. The trail via Fuorcla Surlej down into Val Roseg and back to Pontresina is a special experience. The mountain summer with its fragrant herb meadows can be particularly enjoyed in dreamy Val Fex. Val Fex is accessible from the Furtschellas top station via Alp Munt or Marmoré. The Waterway Trail, a leisurely 2 1/2 hour hike which leads past six idyllic mountain lakes, also offers unforgettable impressions. Starting point: Furtschellas top station. Whether sportive and performance-oriented or for desire and pleasure, every interest finds a suitable route in the Corvatsch hiking area. Hiking: 3 tips Corvatsch Panorama Trail: Proceed leisurely over aromatic alpine meadows and flourishing summer pastures. An easy hike leads from the Corvatsch halfway station to the Furtschellas top station. The Osteria Rabgiusa invites you to stay awhile at the halfway point. Fuorcla Surlej Pontresina: Trek up into the glacier world. The approximately four-hour, easily passable hiking trail leads via Fuorcla Surlej down towards Pontresina, and features a view of the majestic Bernina Range. Refreshments are available at Hotel Roseggletscher. Furtschellas Val Fex Sils Maria: The hike leads past the cool mountain lake Lej Sgrischus via Alp Munt down into the idyllic Fex Valley. A bit of stamina is needed for the five-hour hike. 6 PIZ NAIR The Black Peak and its sporty neighbours: hikers love the mountains and the energy of alpine nature. There is more than enough of this in the Piz Nair, Corviglia and Marguns region: a view which extends over the Upper Engadine lake district almost to Maloja on nice days, scenery comprised of green bowls, mountain streams and lakes, and a kaleidoscope of possibilities to wander through the alpine world with hiking shoes or per bike. Athletic cyclists will find a veritable highlight along the route from the Corviglia top station to Suvretta Pass via Val Bever to Celerina. And with a little consideration all species can still get past each other: even the downhill riders on Trottinetts (scooters) set their sights more on enjoyment than on racing during their ride from Marguns to Celerina. Hiking: 3 tips Marguns Corviglia: Even children manage the walk from Marguns to the Corviglia in two hours. Good footwear is recommended. Piz Nair Corviglia: A moderate 2 1/2 hour hike from Piz Nair via Lej da la Pêsch to the Corviglia top station. Panorama Trail: Fantastic views unfurl between Marguns, Chamanna Saluver, Piz Padella and Samedan within three to four hours. Suvretta Loop: The big tour from the Corviglia top station below Piz Nair, up to Suvretta Pass, Alp Suvretta, Spinas and back to Celerina takes four to five hours and especially demands riding ability. 8 DIAVOLEZZA Where the true high mountains start! The Engadine Valley lies almost 2,000 metres above sea level. Here the mountains must even rise into the sky in order to appear high. The Bernina massif vis-à-vis the Diavolezza shows true enormity in this connection. It towers impressively above the scenery with eight peaks ranging up to about the four thousand metre mark: a veritable feast for the eyes and an El Dorado for climbers and alpine mountaineers. But in addition to the declared top destinations Piz Palü and Piz Bernina, the high mountain region from the pivotal Diavolezza can also be experienced in another way: during a glacier hike across the tongue of the Pers & Morteratsch Glaciers on the 500 treading steps of the fixed-rope climbing route (Via Ferrata) or during a wellness experience at Europe s highest Jacuzzi. Diavolezza Munt Pers: The hike from the Diavolezza top station to the Munt Pers lookout point is easy. The Senda dal Diavel is assigned to the type alpine hiking because of climbing passages and airy positions but also because you can spend 5 hours in the high alpine setting of the Bernina area. Ascent is via Lej Collinas East Ridge of Munt Pers Berghaus Diavolezza. Only for experienced hikers! Mountain adventures: 2 tips Climbing path: The entry to Via Ferrata / Piz Trovat is only 20 minutes away and is also suitable for less experienced climbers because of the treading steps and the safety cable. However, surefootedness, a good head for heights and knowledge of climbing are a prerequisite. Equipment can be rented at the base station. Glacier hike: Moraines and glacier tables, ice cracks and crevasses: these natural phenomena can be viewed up close in the course of this guided day tour (see page 25). 10 MUOTTAS MURAGL ALP LANGUARD Something for the heart and for the feet. Not only artists have been inspired since time immemorial by the view from the classic mountain. People like us are also captivated over and over again by the setting. Alone the ascent with the red funicular is a show. For over 100 years it has climbed up the steep slope and is the second oldest mountain railway in the Graubünden region. Some come to enjoy and have a feast, while others want to hike into the panorama, either down to Pontresina or up to the Segantini Hut and Schafberg, where the famous Italian painter Giovanni Segantini died in seclusion. But the mountain is not only the starting point for family excursions, but also for vigorous tours. For instance, you can proceed via Fuorcla Muragl into Val Prüna towards La Punt a proper day march. Whoever starts from Alp Languard can even hike down via Fuorcla Pischa into the peace and quiet of Val dal Fain. Muottas Muragl Segantini Hut: The ascent is managed in nearly two hours. But do not set out under any circumstances without good footwear. Muottas Muragl Fuorcla Muragl La Punt: Good physical condition and surefootedness are required for this tour, which takes a solid 6 hours with the aid of mountain cable cars. Wildlife: Those who are lucky cannot only see marmots in the 4-hour wildlife observation tour. The guides direct the route depending on the whereabouts of the animals, and also know where chamois and ibex graze. The meeting point is the base station of the Alp Languard chair lift; every Friday with any weather. Advance reservation is required by 17:00 on the previous day. The route proceeds in zigzag fashion across the glacial fields towards natural phenomena such as glacier tables, marginal moraines and ice cracks. But if there is shimmering ice under your feet, this is not only an uplifting feeling, but also an instance which requires a mountain guide. Both are available on the Corvatsch. There is a sophisticated terrain profile, ice trails and for good measure an extensive panoramic view of prominent peaks: Piz Bernina, Piz Roseg, the Sella group and the Bergell peaks in the south. After the ascent of Piz Murtél (3,433 m), the glacier surface is traversed up to Piz Corvatsch before the tour returns to Fuorcla Surlej via the east flank. Right above the Pontresina mountain climbing village they are clearly visible due to the permafrost regression. Dry stone walls, dams and other obstruction measures protect the village against mudflows, avalanches and rockslides. The trail leads from Muottas Muragl over Schafberg to Alp Languard. Classic examples shown on the Clean Energy Tour have been created with renewable energies from hydroelectric power, sun, wind and biogas between 1,770 and 3,057 metres above sea level. The informative tour leads from St. Moritz up to Piz Nair (3,057 m). This includes the light-wind facility on Munt da San Murezzan (2,666 m), the 180 solar panels of the Corviglia railway, and the oldest electric power station in Switzerland. It is driven with hydroelectric power. Not only the natural show is enchanting while the hike first proceeds towards Alp Munt and then around the lakes. The audio guide also reveals details about the flora, fauna and stories concerning the scattered water pots. The fables are firmly linked with the mountain lakes. The continuation is no less promising. It takes in the Lower Schafberg Hut between mountain pines and gnarled roots of Swiss stone pines before the Alp Languard with chairlift comes into view after a final uphill through steep slopes. Here you either succumb to the charming combination of panorama and fresh pastries or hop into the double chair lift for the descent to Pontresina. - Length: 7 km - Hiking time: approx. 2 hours Via San Gian 30, 7500 St. Moritz Tel.: +41 (0) Diavolezza Climbing Wall Is the weather too bad to go up the Piz Palü? Then it is time for climbing training in the protected top station of the Diavolezza railway. The route starts at about 2,850 metres and follows the west pillar before it crosses a gorge via a cable suspension bridge at about 3,050 metres. In addition to regional Bündner specialities, the chef knows how to dish up tasty treats from the Italian Valtellina region. There is no dearth of fantastic wines at this altitude. Those who want can soak up the silence of the mountains from Europe s highest Jacuzzi and watch the summits while falling asleep. And on the neighbouring summit of the Diavolezza panorama of the Bernina massif becomes the icing on the cake. At 4 o clock in the morning a one-hour ascent leads via a well-developed yet narrow trail through the quiet darkness of the high mountain region. The stars still shine. But just in time, before the day dawns, the 3,207 m box seat on Munt Pers is reached. The light announces its arrival with the first hot sips of tea. In turn, a magical spectacle of colour coats the sky. Seconds later the sun illuminates the chains of mountain peaks as far as Italy and across to Austria. Directly opposite, the wild beauties Piz Palü and Bernina awaken into an absolute visual attraction. 28 ANIMALS IN THE ENGADINE ANIMALS IN THE ENGADINE 1 1 Adaptation artists The Upper Engadine is alpine highlands. Winters lasts up to six months. They are hard and long. The ground is frozen, the vegetation sparse. 51 percent of surfaces are covered with rock, only one fifth is alpine turf and the rest are trees, mainly conifers. It is not astonishing that only a few animal species are capable of survival here. 1. Golden eagle It is regarded as King of the Alps. The eagle is a predator that feeds on small mammals in the summer and carrion in the winter. 2. Bearded vulture The bearded vulture was exterminated in the 19th century, since it was notorious as a predator of lambs. Nevertheless it is a pure scavenger. The bird is imposing and makes an impression on man and animal with its wingspan of three metres. 3. Alpine jackdaw It belongs to the Corvidae (raven) family of birds and lives in the mountains at altitudes between 1,500 and 3,900 metres. The jackdaw is nearly 40 centimetres long with a yellow beak and red legs. Hunted and marvelled at The high mountain region was also a sparse habitat for humans, which they also defended against animals. As a result, bears and lynx were practically exterminated. Hoofed animals such as deer, chamois and ibex were and still are suppliers of meat and will be hunted. But today hunting also serves to regulate the population. 1. Ibex They are mountain specialists and belong to the genus of goats. A male ibex weighs about 100 kilograms and has imposing antlers of up to one metre in length. 2. Red deer Deer take in between 8 and 20 kilos of forage per day. They eat grass, bark, nuts, lichens and buds. 3. Marmots Marmots live in family groups. In order to protect themselves in low-cover terrain against enemies, they are dependent on their lairs. At the first sign of danger they vanish in them and while doing so emit shrill warning whistles

29 PLANTS IN THE ENGADINE PLANTS IN THE ENGADINE 1 1 Mountain meadows colourful blossoms and rich in species In June, the alpine meadows are a veritable paradise of blossoms with hundreds of flowers and plants which flourish and bloom. The alpine meadow is poor in nitrogen and rich in grasses such as yellow oatgrass and red fescue, and rich in flowers such as thistles, arnica, knapweeds, baldmoney and gentian. 1. Edelweiss The protected edelweiss is white with long leaves which are hairy. The plant belongs to the family of Compositae. The flower grows on stony ground. 2. Alpine roses The alpine rose belongs to the family of rhododendrons. It is evergreen. The plant roots flat, which facilitates the growth in the rocky terrain. 3. Gentian Gentian is regarded as the symbol of fidelity because of its pure blue colour. The flower closes with cloudy sky and opens again with sunshine. Gentians are protected and may not be picked. The mountain forest attractive and robust The timberline is about 2,000 metres above sea level and the mountain forest is located underneath. It is constituted differently than the forest in the midland. Larches, Swiss stone pines and mountain pines dominate the tree population in the Upper Engadine. The trees are often shaped through wind and weather. Their growth is slow. 1. Swiss stone pine It grows up to 30 metres high and lives up to 1,000 years. Young trees are conical with a thick growth of needles. Older trees have a broadly rounded shape. 2. Larch It is deciduous, becomes golden yellow in the autumn and then sheds its needleshaped leaves. The larch withstands great temperature fluctuations. 3. Pine The pine tree belongs to the family of pine plants. It has particularly long needles. In the spring the resin of pine trees smells very intensive
