The start of this moderately difficult climb (K 2-3) is set against a stunning backdrop, just a 20-minute walk from the Diavolezza mountain terminal. The route starts at around 2,850 m and follows the western buttress of the mountain before crossing a ravine via a rope bridge at 3,050 m. The route then leads up the southwest face to the peak where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the highest mountains in the Eastern Alps and the Bernina massif. - K 2-3 = easy to difficult, sometimes very demanding and exhausting, some exposed sections - Via Ferrata can be used free of charge Date/validity - From mid-june / beginning of July mid-october, depending on snow conditions Information Bergbahnen ENGADIN St. Moritz AG Tel.: +41 (0) info@best.ch Via Ferrata Piz Trovat II (difficult variation) In summer 2011 the more demanding Via Ferrata variation on the Piz Trovat was opened. The level of difficulty (K 5) demands a great deal of strength and endurance. Lengthy overhanging stretches, some up to 30 m in length, require mountaineering ability. The turn-off is at roughly the halfway point, just before the rope bridge. At this point the Via Ferrata forks in two directions with the new fork leading to the 3,146 m peak. Piz Trovat is not suitable for children and requires a minimum height of at least 160 cm, as the grips would otherwise be too far apart. - K 5 = extremely difficult, very demanding and physically demanding - Via Ferrata can be used free of charge Date/validity - From beginning / mid-july mid-october, depending on snow condition Information Bergbahnen ENGADIN St. Moritz AG Tel.: +41 (0) info@best.ch Mountainguide_Sommer_2012_engl_RZ.indd :59

18 ALPINISM ALPINISM Via Ferrata La Resgia This attractive Via Ferrata is located at the southern exit from the village of Pontresina, directly behind Hotel Palü. The starting point is Werkhof Pontresina and from here you climb upwards in the direction of Alp Languard. The Via Ferrata ends at the treeline on Röntgenweg and from here it is just a fifteen-minute uphill walk to the Alp Languard restaurant. This is the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the view from the terrace. You can either take a relaxed trip down by cable car or choose to descend on foot which takes approx. 45 minutes. Thanks to the excellent westerly location of the rock face there is sunshine late into the afternoon and you can start the climb at anytime through until 14:00. The renovations were the perfect starting point for establishing a sustainable, environmentally friendly business and now the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl has become the first energy-positive hotel in the entire Alpine region. The mountainside hotel has received not only the Swiss Solar Prize 2011 and the PlusEnergieBau (PEB) Solar Prize 2011, but also the MILESTONE tourism award in the category Environment. For further details see The prizes reinforce the efforts Bergbahnen ENGADIN St. Moritz AG has been making for many years now to work in a way which respects its natural surroundings. 30 ANIMALS IN THE ENGADIN 1 1 Survival of the fittest The Upper Engadin is Alpine high plateau country. Winters can last for up to six months and are long and hard. The ground is frozen solid and the vegetation is barren. 51 percent of the landscape is covered by rock, only around one fifth is Alpine grass and the remainder consists of mainly of coniferous trees. It is therefore not surprising that only very few species of animal survive here. 1. Golden eagle He is considered to be the king of the Alps. The eagle is a predator which feeds on small mammals in summer and carrion in winter. 2. Bearded vulture In the 19 th century the bearded vulture became extinct in the Alps because it was believed to prey on lambs. However, it actually feeds exclusively on carrion. It is a majestic bird which makes an impression on both humans and animals alike with its three-metre wingspan. 3. Alpine chough Belonging to the birds of prey family, this bird lives in a mountain habitat between 1,500 and 3,900 m above sea level. The Alpine chough is just 40 centimetres long and has a yellow beak and red feet. Hunted and admired For humans, the high mountain region was a barren living environment which had to be defended against animals. This is how the bear and the lynx came to be practically extinct. Hoofed animals such as deer, chamois and ibex were, and still are, sources of meat and therefore the targets of hunters. Today, however, hunting is only carried out to assist population regulation. 1. Ibex This animal is an expert when it comes to mountain living and belongs to the goat species. A male ibex will grow to weigh approximately 100 kg and sports impressive horns of up to one metre in length. 2. Red deer Deer eat between 8 and 20 kilograms of food each day. They feed on grass, bark, nuts, lichen and buds of plant or trees. 3. Marmots Marmots live in family groups. In order to protect themselves from predators in a landscape offering few places to hide, they have to rely on their burrows. If danger is approaching they disappear below ground while emitting shrill whistles of warning Mountainguide_Sommer_2012_engl_RZ.indd :00

31 PLANTS IN THE ENGADIN 1 1 Mountain meadows Beautiful blooms, colourful and diverse In the month of June, the Alpine meadows are a blooming paradise of blossoming and flourishing flowers and plants. Alpine meadows are nitrogen-poor and rich in grasses such as yellow oat grass and red fescue and flowers including thistle, wolf s bane, knapweed, cow parsley and gentian. 1. Edelweiss Edelweiss is a protected species with long, hairy leaves. It belongs to the daisy family and grows on stony ground. 2. Alpine rose The Alpine rose belongs to the rhododendron family and is evergreen. The plant s roots spread sideways, which makes it easier for it to grow on rocky terrain. 3. Gentian The gentian is considered a symbol of loyalty because of it pure blue colour. The blooms close in cloudy weather and reopen when the sun shines. The gentian is a protected species and should not be picked. Mountain forest beautiful yet robust The tree line is at approx. 2,000 metres above sea level and below this level is the mountain forest which is different in character to forests on the central plateau. The Upper Engadin forest is dominated by the larch, Swiss stone pine and mountain pine species. The trees are often shaped by wind and weather. Their rate of growth is slow. 1. Swiss stone pine This tree can grow up to 30 m and live for as long as 1,000 years. Young trees are cone shaped with a thick coating of needles. Older trees have a broader, rounder form. 2. Larch The larch is deciduous and in autumn the needles turn golden yellow and shed. The tree can survive considerable changes in temperature. 3. Scots pine Part of the pine family, the Scots pine has especially long needles. In spring the tree s resin has a very intensive fragrance Mountainguide_Sommer_2012_engl_RZ.indd :00
