In cool season (Nov-Feb), temperatures are comfortable. In rainy season (May-Oct), you will find the lush landscape but some islands shut down and boat service is limited during stormy weather. 7 WHAT TO KNOW Thai baht (B) GMT plus seven hours International air arrivals are entitled to 30-day visa, 15-day visa at land borders and 60-day tourist visa through application at the Thai consulate. ATMs widespread with a charge of 150B foreign-account transaction. Visa and MasterCard accepted at most shops. Buy inexpensive pre-paid SIM cards for GSM phones. 3G is available. Free wi-fi usually available in cafés and hotels. Thailand uses 220V AC electricity: power outlets most commonly feature two-prong round or flat sockets. Tipping is not standard but it is appreciated. If there is a small bit of change from a restaurant bill or metered taxi, it is common to offer it as a tip. GETTING AROUND Extensive and affordable for travel between town. Cheap domestic connections on low-cost airlines. Slow but scenic between Bangkok and other provinces. Convenient but make sure the taxi driver uses the fare meter. The meter starts at 35B. Don t forget to carry a map or card from your hotel. Easy to rent for local tours. 10 WAT PHRA THAT DOI SUTHEP Sivichai Road, Tambon Suthep, Mueang, Chiang Mai , The province s most important temple and spiritual centre, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a must for visitors. The temple is located on top of Suthep Mount, providing a view of the city. Phra That Doi Suthep, the stupa, is a sacred place for those born in the year of the goat. A festival is held on Visakha Puja Day when Buddhists wash the stupa with holy water. The temple is accessed by a 300 step stairway or by elevator between 5.30am and 8pm. NEED TO KNOW Lanna Royal Cemetery at Wat Suan Dok Built by order of King Ku Na, the ancient temple of Wat Suan Dok Wora Maha Viharn houses the cemetery of the Lanna royal family (Na Chiang Mai family). 11 CULTURE + HERITAGE WAT KET KARAM MUSEUM Wat Ket Karam, 96 Ban Wat Ket, Chareon Rat Road, Tambon Wat Ket, Mueang, Chiang Mai am-4pm Explore the hidden history of Wat Ket, an old community on the eastern side of the Ping River which once was home to various races. Its riverside location made it a melting pot of cultures, business, and trade. The museum features historical artifacts and architectural items, such as gable ends, traditional roof ridges, and ceramic wares. REUN SOR-HONG 185/3 Wua Lai Road, Tambon Hai Ya, Mueang, Chiang Mai Advance booking is required This 130 year-old wooden house was relocated to the compound of Chiang Mai Cultural Center. Built on stilts in Lanna style, it contains 20 th century ceramic ware from San Kamphaeng kiln, Wiang Kalong kiln, and Pong Daeng kiln in Chiang Rai, lacquer ware from Tai Khuen, and traditional tools of Lanna. 12 DARA PIROM PALACE MUSEUM Tambon Rim Tai, Mae Rim, Chiang Mai Tue-Sun 9am-5pm , Situated in Dara Rasmi Border Patrol Police Camp in a Western style building, the museum displays artifacts and belongings of Princess Dara Rasmi, consort of King Rama V. All is in excellent shape, including the living room, personal belongings, and musical instruments (admission fee 20 baht for adults). LANNA FOLKLIFE MUSEUM Old Court Building, opposite to Three Kings Monuments, Prapok Klao Road, Tambon Siphum, Mueang, Chiang Mai cm.3museum Tue-Sun 8.30am-5pm Adapted from the building that was Chiang Mai s civil court, the museum shows the prosperous history of Chiang Mai in culture, tradition, and art. It tells interesting stories about folklore and the coronation of King Tilokrat of Chiang Mai, and has statues of famous Buddhist monks of the province (admission fee 90 baht for adults and 40 baht for kids). NEED TO KNOW Sip coffee at Café De Museum After learning about history, it is a good idea to sit back in this lovely café. Outdoor and indoor tables are all decorated in Lanna style. 13 CULTURE + HERITAGE WAT PHRA SINGH Sam Larn Road, Tambon Phra Singh, Mueang, Chiang Mai , With a history dating back 655 years, this first-class royal temple houses an important Buddha image Phra Buddha Sihing, and its wonderful art at Viharn Lai Kham, Viharn Luang, Pitaka Hall. The many murals make it one of the biggest Lanna art collections. WAT PHAN TAO Phra Pok Klao Road, Tambon Phra Singh, Mueang, Chiang Mai , There are many temples to explore in the heart of Chiang Mai city. One of these is Wat Phan Tao with its outstanding ubosoth. Formerly, it was a royal hall during the reign of King Mahotara Pradesh of the Lanna kingdom. The wooden ubosoth in local style is unique with wood-carved gables depicting an elegant peacock, the symbol of northern royalty. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful gables in the North. Visit 9 temples in Chiang Mai This is a popular activity for visitors who want to learn about the rich culture of Lanna. Chiang Mai houses many precious temples which serve as spiritual centres, and each has its own unique story. 14 WAT UMONG 135 Moo 10, Tambon Suthep, Mueang, Chiang Mai , KHUM CHAO BURIRAT HOUSE Phra Pok Klao Road, next to Ratchadamnoen Road, Tambon Sri Phum, Mueang, Chiang Mai Mon-Fri 9am-5pm 18 o 47 o 16 o N 98 o 59 o 17 o E It is estimated that this old mansion was constructed between 1889 and The Kitibutr and Thipmonthol donated the building to Chiang Mai University and it now serves as a Lanna architectural centre. The mixture of Lanna and Western architecture reflects the early influences on Chiang Mai. The most exciting part of visiting this temple is the exploration of the dim and sacred atmosphere of its tunnel. The temple was built around the year 1296 in the reign of King Mengrai, but the tunnel was added during the reign of King Kuna as a place for meditation practice. The tunnel has become the symbol of the temple. Its murals are outstanding but most parts have faded away and are now under renovation. NEED TO KNOW Sadu Mueang, Wat Inthakil On the bustling Tha Phae Walking Street on Sundays, a small illuminated ubosoth can be seen beneath the dark sky close to Three Kings Monument and Lanna Folk Museum. This is Wat Inthakil which once housed the city pillar, or Sadu Mueang, which was later relocated to Wat Chedi Luang. The highlight is the launching into the air of lanterns paying homage to a pagoda in the heavens. People believe that bad luck is carried away with the lanterns. Celebrations include fireworks, beauty floats, and other entertainment as thousands of lanterns fly up into the dark sky. The happiest place to launch flying lanterns Every year, Chiang Mai s Yi Peng festival is held at Lanna Dhutanka under the motto Yi Peng San Sai for Buddhism Devotion. This is a big co-operative event organised by the state and private sectors to celebrate Loy Kratong Festival. 103 Phra Pok Klao Road, Tambon Phra Singh, Mueang, Chiang Mai , Visiting this temple is like travelling back through time. The temple houses the biggest pagoda built in the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, the 7th king of the Mengrai dynasty. The most remarkable part is the front entrance of the viharn which has a wonderfully decorated flight of step and nagas, considered to be the most beautiful entrance in the North. Pre-dating Chiang Mai, Wiang Kum Kam served as the Lanna capital for 10 years from The city was abandoned in the 16 th century due to flooding when Mae Ping changed its course. Today the excavated ruins cover 3 sq km. The actual ruins have more historical importance than spectacle, but the horse-drawn carriages for visitors and the bucolic setting add to the ancient ambience. Chiang Mai s riverside suburbs have roads lined with beautiful shops and prestigious houses converted into art galleries, cafés, and restaurants. Time is irrelevant during a visit here. NEED TO KNOW Staying in colourful hotel Besides its glorious history as a trading area, Wat Ket community has a themed compact-sized hotel called Ketwa Hotel. 17 CULTURE + HERITAGE WAT BHUDDA ERN Tambon Chang Keng, Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai Daily 8am-5pm , WAT TON KWEN Moo 4 Tambon Nong Kwei, Hang Dong, Chiang Mai , , This old temple is an outstanding example of the beautiful Lanna architecture, its four-sided pavilion being the only one in the North. Siamese Architects Association honoured it with the Architectural Conservation Award Outstanding Building in The spiritual centre of Mae Chaem people, this temple has a water ubosoth, one of only two in Chiang Mai. The ubosoth is situated on stilts in the middle of a pond surrounded with a laterite wall, and it is registered with the Department of Fine Arts as an ancient site for conservation. NEED TO KNOW The spectacle mural Another pride of Mae Chaem people is Wat Pa Daed, in Tambon Tha Pha. Inside the classic ubosoth, built in 1857, is a complete set of murals by Shan painters depicting the history of the Lord Buddha and Jataka. CHIANG MAI MICE City Breaks 17

18 INTHANON NATIONAL PARK 119 Moo 7, Tambon Ban Luang, Chom Thong, Chiang Mai doiinthanon , Doi Inthanon is the country s highest peak and boasts a rich, natural environment and a cool climate. There are many attractions, such as Napa Methaneedol and Napapol Bhumi Siri Pagodas, Inthanon peak, the nature trail of Kiw Mae Pan, and the best bird-watching in Thailand. The spray covers the whole valley, creating a beautiful rainbow that can be viewed up close from the wooden bridge leading to the cliff. NEED TO KNOW More fun on Doi Inthanon There is a wide range of activities when exploring the wilderness of Doi Intanon. Nature trails are popular, some taking three days to complete. 19 NATURE HAUI NAM DANG NATIONAL PARK Moo 5, Tambon Kud Chang, Mae Taeng, Chiang Mai N , E Situated between Chiang Mai and Pai, Haui Nam Dang is a favourite place to spend a night then view its famous fog-filled valley scenery at dawn. The national park has nature trails, birdwatching sites, and facilities to suit short course sessions. KHUN CHANG KIAN HIGHLAND AGRICULTURE RESEARCH CENTER Khun Chang Kian Village Tambon Chang Puek, Mueang, Chiang Mai , (for accommodation) , Pink cherry blossom which fills the whole village from late December to mid-january attracts many tourists to Khun Chang Kian. There is a study centre, highland agricultural activities, and a nursery for temperate climate plants. Accommodation is available for those who want to stay close to nature. NEED TO KNOW Take only your memories National Parks are reserved areas protected for natural resources. Tourists must follow park regulations, such as placing litter in provided bins, and avoiding the collection of leaves and flowers. N E This is a wildlife reserve area with Chiang Dao peak as a highlight that challenges many hikers to enjoy the first rays of the sun on a tiny piece of land at its summit. The Wildlife Reserve Area is open for tourism from November to March only. Mae Rim is rich in natural attractions, among them, Mae Sa Falls. The water cascades through 8 tiers, each 6 to 8 metres high. The most beautiful parts are tiers 5, 6, and 7. The falls can be visited all year round and the trees provide plenty of shade for tourists to enjoy their picnics. NEED TO KNOW Butterfly legends The story of the Bhutanitis lidderdelei butterfly is a legend of Doi Chiang Dao. Sadly, this butterfly, which was an endemic species that decorated Doi Luang of Chiang Dao Mount, is now extinct. 20 MICE City Breaks CHIANG MAI

21 NATURE OBLUANG NATIONAL PARK 122 Moo 1, Tambon Hang Dong, Hot, Chiang Mai obluang , Obluang is one of the most stunning natural attractions, a steep narrow canyon with a river winding through it. A wooden bridge links two cliffs and allows tourists to explore. In the park s vast area, there is also Thepphanom Hot Springs where visitors can enjoy a dip in the hot springs in a private room, have a Thai massage, go rafting and kayaking, and enjoy the nature trails. KAD MUEANG PHEE Baan Say Khao, Tambon Si Dong Yen, Chai Prakarn, Chiang Mai , (TAT Chiang Mai Office) An impressive natural site on Chai Prakarn, the cliff wall has been carved by the winds and rain for centuries until it is now a piece of natural art. The legend told that the area was once a fertile ground where local people come pick wild produce. One day, a man came and got lost. He wandered around and found the hidden city with big market, thus came the name kad which means market in Northern dialect. Nowadays, it becomes a unique natural attraction for tourists. Tulips of Chai Prakarn Does Chiang Mai have any tulips? They can be found in Chai Prakarn District. Tulip Festival is held throughout the month of January every year at Ban Pha Daeng, Moo 6, Tambon Nong Bua. Tulips in this festival come from the Highland Agricultural Promotion Center, Toeng, Chiang Rai, the only place in Thailand that naturally grows them. Its attractive gardens, orchards, trout and sturgeon farms, picturesque landscape, and temperate weather make it a popular place. There is accommodation and interesting activities, like cooking using produce from the project. For those who love dessert, strawberries with whipped cream should not be missed. NONG HOI ROYAL PROJECT Tambon Mae Raem, Mae Rim, Chiang Mai , nonghoi nonghoyrpf@gmail.com N E Established in 1984 to cope with the problem of opium plantations and shifting cultivation, the royal project has developed various tourist activities, such as learning about agriculture, visiting farms, exploring nature trails, and shopping for hill-tribe handicrafts. The place is packed with opportunities for good experiences, such as visits to temperate climate fruit orchards, tea plantations, hill-tribe villages at Kob Dong and Nor Lae, fog-filled valleys, and a very good restaurant in the station.
