3 Introduction to the project Purpose: Develop the Finnish thermal hydraulic measurement infrastructure at LUT Secure the operability of the existing test facilities, and build new, when needed Prepare for the new large-scale integral test facility (also Academy funding) Co-operate with international top-level research institutes in the field Significance: Large test facilities require maintenance and development New measuring techniques can produce highly detailed data for understanding of safety-relevant flow phenomena development and validation of computational tools Deployment and utilization of the techniques must be practiced Blowdown Transport & filtration Experimental infrastructure and expertise labs, skill, staff, stuff enable rapid solution of problems that arise in the Finnish NPPs; e.g. bitumen in OL3 3

5 WP3, Modular Integral Test facility (MOTEL) The work package included preliminary studies for the new large-scale modular integral test facility, MOTEL In 2016, the research based requirements were surveyed International trends and future needs in (experimental) thermal hydraulic research The requirements and guidelines for the design In 2017, modularity based requirements were surveyed How modularity will be executed Physical scaling principles In 2018, the design of the first MOTEL configuration was introduced The actual design and the construction are funded by the Academy of Finland System behavior (IET) Heat sour ce Component behavior (S/IET) Flow path Flow path Heat sink Local heat & mass transfer (SET) 5

6 Overview of the MOTEL test facility The first MOTEL (MOdular TEst Loop) version models the functioning of a SMR (similar to that of NuScale) Total height ~7.7 m, width ~0.7 m Comprises three changeable modules 1. Core module 2. Steam generator 3. Pressurizer Design pressure/temperature 40 bar/250 C Maximum heating power 990 kw The facility will be assembled in the LUT lab in 2019 Behavior of SMRs not previously studied in Finland MOTEL viewed from above 6

8 Steam generator of MOTEL The steam generator is a helical coil type sg (as in the NuScale s SMR design) 16 steam generator tubes in 4 groups Tube diameter 15x1.2 mm Helical diameters 515/560/605/650 mm Helical tube lengths 20.0/21.7/23.4/25.1 m Total heat transfer area 17 m 2 MOTEL steam generator viewed from above 8

9 Pressurizer of MOTEL The MOTEL pressurizer has two heaters of 30 kw heating power each A 40 bar safety valve with a rupture disc Electric heaters MOTEL pressurizer section viewed from above 9

10 Instrumentation of MOTEL Instrumentation of MOTEL is mostly based on traditional point-form measurements Altogether over 340 thermocouples 5 pressure measurements 7 pressure difference measurements Advanced measuring techniques applied when possible Ultrasonic flow meters to measure primary flowrate in the annular downcomer space Applicability of optic fibers for temperature distribution measuring will be assessed Thermocouple measurements in the MOTEL steam generator tubes 10

11 Conclusions benefits the Finnish nuclear safety community by developing experimental thermal hydraulic infrastructure maintaining the existing test facilities, and building new thereby solving both known and unexpected problems in NPPs MOTEL MOdular TEst Loop is a new integral test facility, to be assembled in 2019 is comprised of interchangeable parts modules can be upgraded with e.g. containment module and/or horizontal or vertical steam generators models an SMR with a general core design and a unique helical coil steam generator will allow the Finnish nuclear community to study the behavior of SMR-like systems perform novel separate effects tests by adding new modules to the facility MOTEL framework installation, March 2019 MOTEL on its framework in the LUT laboratory 11
