1 Announcing The Transferware Collectors Club Annual Meeting in Program Close-up # 1 Phoenix Arizona, October 19-22, 2017 Routson Collection Cupboard The 2017 Annual Meeting s Kaleidoscope of British Transferware will include bus trips to view spectacular transferware collections in two private homes, as well as visits to several notable Phoenix-area attractions. The viewing of private ceramic collections has always been a very special and popular feature of the Annual Meeting agenda. This year, longtime transferware collectors Loren Zeller and Nick Routson have graciously invited attendees to their lovely Phoenix area homes to view and enjoy their extensive collections, which span several periods and collecting genres. Time spent in the Valley of the Sun will be enhanced by visits to an historic mansion and dinner at the world-renown Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens. Friday Morning, October 20: Special Excursions to the Zeller Collection and the Wrigley Mansion TCC President Loren Zeller s interest in transferware began innocently enough, with a few pieces of British Willow patterned earthenware, which mother gave to him and his wife, Anne, in the process of downthe Red Rockshis of Sedona sizing. This gift planted a collecting seed with grew exponentially, as Loren explains: My mother s partial set of Willow pattern china, now a compiled service for 18 and passed on to our daughter, set me on a journey of more than 30 years of collecting, for the most part, transfer-printed Chinoiserie patterns on pottery and porcelain from Great Britain, with a focus on the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The diligent scouring of antique shops, auctions, and trade publications, and the establishment of relationships with fellow collectors and dealers worldwide has enabled Loren to amass a very fine collection of Chinoiserieinspired wares. Included are many patterns with identified sources, as well as exceptional forms: special commemorative and made-for-order items that celebrate important historical or personal events. Saturday, Afternoon & Evening, October 21: Special Excursions to the Routson Collection and Dinner in the Desert Botanical Gardens After a morning of lectures, workshops and lunch, we will travel to Nick Routson s home. Banking executive Nick Routson purchased his first piece of Old Blue transferware at a flea market while still in his teens. The finding of this first treasure fueled his enthusiasm, and he began collecting in earnest after graduating from college. Nick explains, I became interested in transferware because of close friends who had a small collection. They shared many of their reference books with me including David and Linda Arman's Historical Checklist. They also took me to visit collections of other transferware collectors and I was hooked. It was through these visits to other collections and an introduction to friend and dealer Dick Marden that my knowledge and passion grew. Dick became Nick s mentor, graciously sharing knowledge and guidance, and no doubt would be quite impressed with the collection as it stands today. From the single piece of Old Blue, Nick grew his collection intentionally and systematically, as an extremely focused transferware collector. His insatiable interest in One of Nick s cupboards filled American Historical Staffordshire and patterns with with dark blue Staffordshire American views led him to seek out very rare items, and to flesh out and complete numerous series, in dark blue and many other colors. The visit to his beautiful home will enable participants to view his extensive, very impressive transferware collection. Nick s excellent presentation at the 2016 Annual Meeting, Sharing My Love of Old Blue served as a perfect prelude to the viewing of this very personal collection. Collecting enthusiasts will be in for a special treat, as More of Nick s collection Nick s passion for antiques is not limited to ceramics. Begin with a one-hour guided walking tour of the Desert Botanical Garden including the Sybil B. Harrington Cactus and Succulent Galleries and the Berlin Agave Yucca Forest. Next visit Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Today it is the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Lunch nearby. Then continue to downtown Phoenix for a highlights tour at the Heard Museum, which showcases American Indian art and history, followed by time on your own. Dinner on the terrace at Ocotillo Restaurant, featuring New American food and considered one of the top 10 restaurants in Phoenix. Overnight: Embassy Suites Phoenix/Tempe Tuesday, October 24th D PHOENIX / SEDONA We will depart the hotel by coach for the two-hour drive to Sedona, famous for its array of red sandstone formations that appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. See the Chapel of the Holy Cross, have lunch on your own, and enjoy time to shop. Check-in for one night at the Best Western Plus Arroyo Roble Hotel, with marvelous red-rock views. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure. Consider an optional afternoon excursion with Pink Jeep Tours at 3 p.m. (at additional cost; up to 7 people per jeep): Ancient Ruins Tour (3 hours; $95 + tax + gratuity; must be able to walk ¾ mile to view the dwelling and rock art) or the more mild Red Rock Range Tour (2 hours; $75 + tax + gratuity; a milder option over Forest Service roads with no walking involved). Enjoy panoramic views from our seats in the Observation Dome, along with fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice. Our journey through Grand Canyon Country features a variety of stunningly different landscapes: from the Ponderosa pine forest surrounding Williams, to a gentle drop in elevation down to the wideopen prairie before climbing back up to the Piñon pine forests as the train approaches Grand Canyon National Park. Arrive at Grand Canyon Depot at 11:45 a.m., where our coach will meet us for a full day of sightseeing. A box lunch will be provided. 6 OPTIONAL POST-MEETING EXCURSION (continued) Thursday, October 26 th B, D SOUTH RIM, GRAND CANYON Breakfast at El Tovar, then spend a full day exploring the South Rim with our local guide. Enjoy numerous canyon views from various vantage points; such as Powel Point, Monument Creek Vista and Pima Point. Stop for lunch on your own at Hermit s Rest Snack Bar, built by the Fred Harvey Company in 1914 and crafted out of native rock and stone. This evening enjoy a gourmet dinner at El Tovar Restaurant. This majestic dining room is constructed of native stone and Oregon pine with murals on the walls reflecting the customs of four Native American Tribes the Hopi, the Apache, the Mojave and the Navajo. Overnight: El Tovar Friday, October 27 th B, L GRAND CANYON VILLAGE / PHOENIX Following breakfast at El Tovar and check-out, we depart by private coach from the Grand Canyon to Sky Harbor International Airport (4 to 4-1/2 hours). ITINERARY Although Travel Muse and ground operators will make every effort to adhere to the itinerary, on rare occasions it may be necessary to adjust arrangements due to circumstances beyond our control. Should any activities not be available, substitution will be made to the best of our ability and no refund will be made. Any additional costs necessitated by such changes are the responsibility of the tour member.
