1 2017 Annual Meeting Close Up #3 Focus on Interaction On Thursday evening, we will kick off our meeting with a roundtable that addresses the questions club members continually raise about how to ultimately find a new home for the items they have lovingly collected over the years. Roundtable Discussion: How to Liquidate a Collection Meet our Roundtable Participants Nick Routson: Nick, a busy banking executive, is a collector of many things from early American pressed glass to New England furniture, samplers and quilts, and a world-class collection of American Historical Staffordshire. He is knowledge of networking with dealers and acquiring antiques through important estate auctions to build his collections makes him infinitely qualified to put your questions and his own to this talented panel. Nick lives in North Phoenix. Brenda Hornsby Heindl: Brenda is the Head of the Ceramic Department at Vir- gina-based Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Auctions, experts in estate liquidation. She is a graduate of the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and an alumna of Berea College in Kentucky. Her prior work includes the research and education staff at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, and the Ceramics and Glass Department at Colonial Williamsburg. She has also lectured and presented workshops on historic ceramics and pottery production at various seminars and conferences. As a production potter, she built a wood-firing, salt-glaze kiln in 2012, and uses her studio, Liberty Stoneware, as an outlet for historic ceramics research. Dennis Berard: Dennis with wife Ann, is the owner of Dennis of Dad Antiques established 51 years ago in Athol, MA. For the last 45 years, he and Ann have conducted their business in Fitzwilliam NH. Thirty years ago they decided to concentrate their efforts on dealing in late 18th and early 19th English earthenware. Their love of this area of the antique business persists today. Dennis and Ann are long-standing members of the New Hampshire Antiques Dealers Association and are well-known across the United States in the antique ceramics industry, particularly as it relates to transfer-printed wares. They are loved and respected by TCC members who rely on them for advice and as a source of fine ceramics. Miranda Goodby: Miranda is Senior Curator of Ceramics at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK. She studied History of Design and the Visual Arts at Staffordshire University before doing her graduate qualification in museum studies at Manchester University. She has worked in a variety of English museums, from small independent museums through to the British Museum and, since 1995, has been in charge of the ceramics collections at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent where she curates the largest collection of Staffordshire pottery in the world over 30,000 pieces from the 17th century to the present day not including the European, East Asian, and Middle Eastern ceramics. Miranda has taught ceramic 1 history and made frequent visits the USA to speak at conferences. In 2015, she was closely involved with the acquisition of the Minton Factory Archive by the City More of Stoke-on-Trent.

2 Interactive Workshops Each attendee will select one workshop to enhance their personal learning experience. Making Old Things New: Decorating with a Splash! In this workshop, avid antique collector, CEO, and professional designer Diane Brooks will share valuable tips on integrating a transferware collection into an overall decorating scheme. She will demonstrate how to display ceramics with other treasures to create appealing vignettes and how to showcase prized items. Using images of favorite items from her own collection, Diane will highlight the principles of balance and good design. Her enlightening workshop will inspire all with fresh new ideas for decorating with transferware and revitalizing personal collections. To Restore or Not to Restore Your Treasured Piece Ceramic restoration will be the focus of the workshop conducted by Professional Restorer Sherri Conn, owner of The Ceramic Restoration Studio, based in Kinross, Scotland. With over 16 years of experience in the field, Sherri will share her expertise during a hands-on demonstration. In her presentation, she will cover the many aspects of ceramic restoration to include: the principles of restoration; the four stages of the restoration process; how to determine whether or not a ceramic vessel should be restored, and if so, what method of repair is most appropriate; how to detect a previous restoration; and the potential for achievable results at home. Patterns and Sources: A Treasure Trove of information in the TCC Database As an independent scholar, author, and transferware collector extraordinaire, Michael Sack has spent many years collecting and studying transferware and source prints, and is an avid proponent of, and contributor to, the ever-expanding TCC Database of Patterns and Sources. In this workshop, Michael will discuss how to find any of the nearly 1,000 print and ceramic sources for transferware patterns in the database. He will review the types of patterns that might have relied on original sources, explain how and when they were used, how pattern sources can help date patterns, define category types and provide historical background. He will offer guidance on navigating the database by demonstrating how to search for these patterns and links to their sources. Next visit Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Today it is the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Lunch nearby. Then continue to downtown Phoenix for a highlights tour at the Heard Museum, which showcases American Indian art and history, followed by time on your own. Enjoy numerous canyon views from various vantage points; such as Powel Point, Monument Creek Vista and Pima Point. Stop for lunch on your own at Hermit s Rest Snack Bar, built by the Fred Harvey Company in 1914 and crafted out of native rock and stone. This evening enjoy a gourmet dinner at El Tovar Restaurant. This majestic dining room is constructed of native stone and Oregon pine with murals on the walls reflecting the customs of four Native American Tribes the Hopi, the Apache, the Mojave and the Navajo.
