9 Social Activities & Facts about Bucharest Social Activities The participants of the 9 th BRAF Meeting will be able to visit and get acquainted in detail with the historical places of the Romanian capital Bucharest. NAC s team will organize special tour in which you will be able to discover the spirit of the city. Please read in following few lines major facts about Bucharest, before you come and feel it on your own. Facts about Bucharest The first historical reference to this city under the name of Bucharest dates back to the Middle Ages, in 1459, in a document issued by the court of Prince Vlad the Impaler, the prince (voievod in Romanian language) who allegedly inspired the creation of the world renowned character of Dracula. It was in those times that Bucharest started to grow as an important economic and political center of Wallachia. The Old Princely Court is the most important architectural complex which reminds of those times. After that, in 1881 became the capital city of the Principality of Romania, after the unification of Moldavia and Wallachia. Much of the medieval architectural heritage was destroyed in a fire in 1847, but the modern era brought a new period of prosperity. A strikingly modern city was being built, and the architectural landscape and urban layout brought international fame to Bucharest. 9
10 Bucharest is situated on the banks of the Dâmboviţa River, which flows into the Argeş River, a tributary of the Danube. Several lake the most important of which are Lake Herăstrău, Lake Floreasca, Lake Tei, and Lake Colentina stretch across the northern parts of the city. In addition, in the centre of the capital is a small artificial lake Lake Cișmigiu surrounded by the Cişmigiu Gardens. These gardens have a rich history, having been frequented by poets and writers. Population, Language and Alphabet Like most cities throughout the world, Bucharest performs a census on its citizens every ten years. The last census was in 2011 and showed that the overall population within Bucharest was 1,883,400 people. The current population reflects 9.365% of the total population of Romania. The ethnic backgrounds of Bucharest reflect that of the rest of Romania, and 89.9% of the population is considered to be of Romanian descent. The other ethnicities within the city are 2.5% Romans, 6.6% Hungarians, 0.3% Ukrainians, 0.2% Russians, 0.3% Germans and 0.2% Turkish. The official language of Bucharest is Romanian. The Romanian alphabet is a variant of the Latin alphabet and consists of 31 letters. Romanian orthography does not use accents 10
11 or diacritics, these are secondary symbols added to letters - Ă, Â, Î, Ş, Ţ - to alter their pronunciation or to distinguish between words. They have been modified from their Latin originals for the phonetic requirements of the language. Romanian spelling is mostly phonemic without silent letters. The letters Q (chiu), W (dublu v), and Y (igrec or i grec) were formally introduced in the Romanian alphabet in 1982, although they had been used earlier. The letter K, although relatively older, is also rarely used and appears only in proper names and international neologisms. Climate Bucharest has a humid continental climate. Owing to its position on the Romanian Plain, the city's winters can get windy, though some of the winds are mitigated due to urbanization. Winter temperatures often dip below 0 C (32 F), sometimes even to 20 C ( 4 F). In summer, the average temperature is 23 C (73 F) (the average for July and August). Temperatures frequently reach 35 to 40 C (95 to 104 F) in midsummer in the city centre. Although average precipitation and humidity during summer are low, occasional heavy storms occur. During spring and autumn, daytime temperatures vary between 17 and 22 C (63 and 72 F), and precipitation during spring tends to be higher than in summer, with more frequent yet milder periods of rain.
