2 Deliverable 6-8: Minutes of the launching event of the project ISWM-TINOS Background This report entitled: Minutes of the launching event of the project ISWM-TINOS was produced under co-finance of the European financial instrument for the Environment (LIFE+) as the eighth Deliverable (D6-8) of Action 6 of Project ISWM-TINOS (LIFE10/ENV/GR/000610) during the implementation of Activity 6-1 on the Launching Event in Tinos Island. This report summarises the main issues presented and discussed during the launching event which took place at the Cultural Centre of Pyrgos in Tinos, on Friday 4 th of November 2011 in the afternoon. The launching event was organized after the kick-off meeting (which took place on the same day in the morning). Introduction The launching event of the ISWM-TINOS project took place at the Cultural Centre of Pyrgos in Tinos, on November 4th 2011 in the afternoon. Pyrgos is located at the north part of Tinos island and it is the capital of the Municipal Unit of Panormou (Figure 1). Pyrgos was a major marble carving center, and it's still home to a major art academy. Pyrgos will be the participating community to ISWM-TINOS project. Pyrgos Town of Tinos Figure 1: Location of Pyrgos in Tinos Island Prior to the launching event a poster had been prepared and erected by the Coordinating Beneficiary to different places in the Island. The Poster is attached in Annex I, while in Figure 2 the erected posters to different positions are presented. Furthermore, the invitation and the agenda of the event, which had been prepared prior to the launching event, are given in Annex II and III, accordingly. Finally, a ii

The brochure was distributed to the participants of the launching event and is attached in Annex IV. Figure 2: Posters for the launching event erected in Tinos Island 1. Registration and Welcome address The launching event started at (including registration of participants) and ended at The participants were encouraged by the ISWM-TINOS team to register to the participant list. The participation was high enough (more than 50 persons) despite the fact that several participants, especially the older ones, did not register themselves. The participant list is attached in Annex V. At 18.30, Mr. Anastasios Vidalis announced the official beginning of the event and invited the participants to the main hall of the Centre. Mr. Anastasios Vidalis on behalf of Mr. Panagiotis Krontiras (Mayor of Tinos) welcomed the participants of ISWM-TINOS project in the launching event and made an introductory speech for the project. Following he invited the partners of the ISWM-TINOS project to present the participating Institutions. 2. Partners presentation Mr. Anastasios Vidalis from TINOS, invite each beneficiary to present orally its organisations and activities. Presentation of the project Mr. Anastasios Vidalis invited Mrs. Katerina Valta on behalf of Prof. Maria Loizidou to present the project main objectives and main actions. The presentation was executed in Greek. During this presentation the main actions of the project were presented to the participants in order to explain the need for the implementation of such a project in order to tackle solid waste management problems in the island. Mrs. Katerina Valta highlighted the need for a holistic approach and the need of public participation for the successful implementation of an Integrated Solid Waste Management scheme. Krontiras) After the project presentation, the Mayor of Municipality, Mr. Panagiotis Krontiras (Figure 5), who had arrived to participate in the event, welcomed the participants and underlined the importance of the ISWM-TINOS project for the Municipality of Tinos. He briefly presented the existing situation in waste management and treatment in Tinos. In this framework, he informed the participants that this project is in line with the actions of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change (YPEKA) as discussed during the meeting that took place on 3 rd November 2011 in YPEKA with subject the solid waste management and the closure and remediation of uncontrolled disposal sites at South Aegean Islands. Moreover, he expressed the belief that such a project can help Tinos face waste management issues in full scale and also help the competent authorities towards their smoother harmonization with the relative European Legislation. He also thanked the Associated Beneficiaries for their contribution to the implementation of the project and underlined the need for public participation in the project. of 3

Presentation on legislative framework and existing treatment technologies for municipal solid waste The last presentation was dedicated on the Legislative Framework and existing treatment technologies for municipal solid waste. The presentation was executed by Mr. Konstantinos Moustakas (Figure 6). During this presentation special attention was given on the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC and on the composting treatment technology for the management of organic waste due to the relevance with the technical subject of the project. Mr. Moustakas made clear reference to the priorities in the field of waste management, the applied management practices in the rest EU countries and the targets that have to be achieved according to the legislation. In addition, he described in brief all biological and thermal management practices, explained why the aerobic biological treatment was selected for the case of Tinos and how the final product (compost) can be utilized. Discussion and Closing of the event Figure 7: Mr. Simeon Orfanos (the former Mayor of Tinos) After the presentations, a discussion with the participants took place. The participants were very happy to take part in this project. They asked questions on the way that source separation will be done and on the potential uses of the compost product. The ISWM- TINOS team explained to them that special event will be organized in order to train them for such issues. Finally, at the closing of the event Mr. Simeon Orfanos (the former Mayor of Tinos) (Figure 7) expressed his best wishes for the successful implementation of the project. During his service the proposal of ISWM-TINOS project had been submitted and he was really happy that this effort has been materialized. Photos from the launching event are given in Annex VI. 4
