4 Partner: AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS Title: Pellets Sources, Technologies & Applications Date: Location: Athens Organiser: Agricultural University of Athens Partners of the Project: AUA representatives Development of the Workshop: Within the framework of the project, on May 25th 2009, a workshop on national & international pellet market was held in Athens, Greece, organized by the Agricultural University of Athens. The aim of the workshop was to identify current developments, bottlenecks and opportunities for international/global pellet market. 5 Short description and results: During the preparation of the workshop, many dissemination activities had been conducted with the aim of increasing the number of participants related to the biomass-biofuels topic. An invitation accompanied by the workshop program had been uploaded to the official AUA website ( and two more websites referring to engineers, agricultural businesses and farmers ( An announcement had been sent to several societies: Greek Society of Agronomists Greek Society of Agricultural Engineers Greek Society of Biomass Greek Society of Wind Energy The above mentioned activities gave positive results and the number and diversity of the audience were significant. The number of participants reached 41 people that were representing Universities, Research Institutes, Industry, Enterprises, free Lancers and Students (see below: Annex 2). The presentations have covered the biggest part of pellets production, trade and consumption. The total work completed during the project was shown to the audience. Biomass availability and quality generally and in Greece particularly was presented analytically, as pellet market is evolving and it is important to have detailed information of possible raw material. Production and household heating equipment were also analysed to promote the easiness of pellet production and use. As for district heating and electricity production, a project of the Public Power Cooperation S.A. ( co-firing coal with MB Pellets (cardoon raw material) was presented. Furthermore, economic analysis and evaluation of pellet raw material production was performed. Finally, the representatives of pellets industries had provided important information and barriers of their involvement in Greek and EU market. All presentations were available to the audience. 6 The participants were considerably active throughout the whole workshop, as there were different opinions coming from different sectors of the same topic. Many issues were put on table and in most of them possible solutions were given. It is important to state that this event was the first ever in Greece where most of pellet actors participated and had the opportunity to receive significant knowledge. At the same time a discussion about pellets market obstacles was realised with positive results. Page 6

All the presentations were in Greek, as the audience was national. Ten presentations were carried out during the Workshop. Three of them were particularly focus on the project.
