1 Hey Fellow Kampers, Spring 2010 Well hey guys, snow is still on the ground; it s cold and I know that I am not the only one who is tired of this cold weather. I ve heard from several of you about when the Spring Kampout will be. So it s time to start thinking about the Spring Kampout. We had a good turnout last Fall. Twenty one guys were in attendance. Not a record by any means but a very good number. I came down with a cold on Tuesday evening and didn t start feeling better until Saturday morning. I don t want that to happen again. We are going to try a new camp site. Thanks to Jim Shockley for scouting out this site. It s Pike State Forest. The address is Ferdinand, Indiana but it s very near Winslow. Pike State Forest is actually part of Ferdinand State Forest. We are going to the Pike unit. This site is just a little further than Martin State Forest which is where I was planning to go. Now, here are the Spring Kampout details: KICKS XXXIX (39) Pike State Forest, Near Winslow, Indiana Week ending April 11 th, 2010 You are responsible for campsite rental so double, triple, and quadruple up to save fees. Fee: $40.00 includes beer and food On Sunday morning, EVERYONE should stay until we have the trailer packed and hooked up. Everyone has been doing a great job of helping repack the trailer. Just make sure that newbies get the rule by word and by your example. Then we have our Champaign Toast (if it s the Spring Kampout) and we take a group photo. Pack your stuff up AFTER we get the trailer loaded and hooked up. Send your reservation for $40.00 (check made out to me) so I receive it before April 5 th. Tell me when you are going to arrive (when is the first AND last meal that you will want to eat?) Send it early so that we can do the necessary planning. I am still out of work and have been forced into retirement so I plan on getting there on Monday (if there are others to help set up the canopy). Note to SECOND TIMERS: On the second Kampout, a kamper is asked to pay a $20.00 Equipment Fee. This is a onetime fee and helps build up funds to purchase new equipment. In the past, we have purchased the canopy, replacement tarps, and the big gas grill. We access this fee on the second Kampout in case you don t like the Kampouts OR we don t invite you back. Special note: You can bring ANYONE to a Kampout (other than women). Just make sure that individual would be comfortable with the environment that we have. Page 1 of 7

2 We need lots of firewood as usual. You young bucks need to start bringing a whole bunch. We old farts are getting too tired to keep bringing it all. For God s sake, buy a freaking truck or trailer and start hauling wood. As usual I need a Beer Hauler (or two) to purchase and haul keg(s) on Friday. Call me!!! I will arrange to get money to you. Information about Pike State Forest: Pike State Forest was placed under the management of Ferdinand State Forest in July The Pike State Forest consists of 2,939 acres in southwestern Indiana. Acquisition of the land that makes up Pike State Forest began in the 1930s, and continued through the 1950s. Most of the buildings on the property were constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) using material cut from local timber stands. Topography at Pike State Forest varies from hilly uplands to the low bottomlands of the Patoka River. Because of the diversity of sites, a wide variety of plant and animal life make their homes at Pike. Several recreational opportunities are available at Pike State Forest, including hunting, horseback riding, picnicking, bird watching and hiking. Primitive camping is available for a fee. Campsites are available on a first come, first serve basis. Self-registration is required. Pit toilets and seasonal drinking water are available. There is a picnic table and grill located on each site. Eleven sites are available in the family camping area and 25 sites are located in the Horseman's Campground. Hiking is available on the forest property's fire-lanes and bridle trails. All horses brought, driven or ridden onto the State Forest must have a valid annual horse use tag. Hikers and horseback riders are advised to wear hunter orange or other bright clothing while on trails during hunting season. 5 From the DNR web site: Information about FIRE WOOD Kentral Indiana Camping Klub IDNR is working in cooperation with other Midwestern states to stop the spread of emerald ash borer, an exotic insect that kills ash trees. It is against State and Federal laws to transport firewood (other than pine) from quarantined areas where emerald ash borer has been found. Firewood CANNOT be brought into our Indiana state parks, reservoirs and state forests from the following areas: anywhere in Michigan; the following quarantined Ohio counties: Auglaize, Defiance, Delaware, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Huron, Lorain, Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, Williams; the following quarantined Illinois counties: Kane; and the following quarantined Indiana counties: Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Hamilton, Huntington, LaGrange, Marion, Porter, Steuben, St Joseph, Randolph, & White. Firewood from these locations will be confiscated. Please help us control the spread of this invasive insect that can destroy our ash trees. If the facility you are visiting allows campfires, please burn ALL of your firewood prior to leaving the state park, reservoir or state forest property.
