3 DP No. 2 THE CHATEAU OF TROY WORKSHEET No. 1 The chateau of Troy OR UNDER A LUCKY STAR Worksheet for the chateau project HISTORY Intended for group work 1. The chateau of Troy was built in the second half of the 17th century by architect J. B. Mathey to serve as the summer residence of Václav Vojtěch of Šternberk. The castle is also known as a Roman villa. To make sure you understand, distinguish the following terms, match what goes together and cross out what Troy definitely isn t: fortified manor house suburban residence country house of a noble man aristocratic summer residence aristocratic city residence villa chateau palace castle summer residence 2. The count of Šternberk built his summer residence in Zadní Ovenec, a place today known as Troy. How did Ovenec become Troy The most likely explanation derives from the existence of the summer residence of Elisabeth from Lobkowicz which could be found not far from the Trojan villa and which was said to look like the ruins of ancient Troy. Write down what Minor Asian Troy was famous for. 3. The chateau of Troy (Troja) is not decorated with subjects of heroes of the Trojan War e.g. Helen, Paris, Achilles, Odysseus but many other subjects coming from Greek mythology. 4 4. Every visitor of the chateau of Troy is astonished by the fresco in Habsburk hall and its 3D effect. The fresco (1 400 sq. meters) shows the triumphant celebration of victory over the Turkish forces in 1683.The authors of the painting brothers Abraham and Isaac Godony had been studying Michelangelo s painting technique on a flat ceiling in the Sixtine Chapel in Rome. It took them 6 years to get the decorating of the hall finished. 5 6. Baroque castles can usually be characterized by monumental staircases leading into their main halls. The staircase of the chateau of Troy can serve as a classical example and its images can be found in any publication dealing with the baroque era in the Czech lands. You can also find a lot of information on the Internet (search for Gigantomachia). Pay more attention to the baroque staircase. Find the date when it was built, signature of the sculptor, identify ancient Gods who contributed most to the victory over the Giants. The allegorical sculptures on the outer side of the staircase represent 4 phases of a day, 4 elements and 4 continents known to people back at that time, do not search for opposites on one place but on the opposite sides of the staircase, baroque style loves contrasts and symmetry. 6 The outside and the inside part of the staircase is decorated by numerous animal carvings. Find 5 of them, write down the names of the animals and circle names of those being bred in Prague Zoo. 8. Except for an eight-rayed star, in the chateau of Troy we can find the coat of arms belonging to Klára Bernardina of Malzan, the wife of the building owner on which we can see some rabbits and grapes. Find the coat of arms, take a photo of it or draw it. 9. The chateau of Troy is governed by Galerie hl. Města Prahy (the Gallery of Prague), which has placed a collection of Czech fine art in the halls of the chateau. Choose one painting that appealed to you, describe it and explain your choice. The picture I am interested in 10. The visitors to the chateau of Troy (Troja) have a chance to see the castle park, enjoy its symmetrical lines, notice the chateau creates a connecting line with Prague castle, admire the work of the architect of the chateau Jean Baptist Mathey and last but not the least have a rest.
