2 Apollo Son of Zeus and Leto Symbol Twin sister is Artemis God of music, and playing golden lyre God of light and medicine

3 Myth of Apollo "Apollos fight" with the monstrous python The python of Delphi was a creature with the body of a snake. Wherever it went it gave off the smell and spread of mischief and death. The python was sent out by Hera to hunt and kill the pregnant Leto, also Apollo's mom. By the time Apollo was only four days old he went to the creatures cave to seek the python. He eventually killed the monster by shooting him in the head with his bows and arrow.

5 Myth of Artemis Artemis was born first and helped her mother deliver Apollo. Niobe queen of Thebes boasted that she was better then Leto because she had more children then her. Artemis and Apollo avenged their mother by killing most of Niobe's children. Niobe was transformed into a stone.

6 Aphrodite Symbol Goddess of love, beauty, and sexual rapture Symbols: dove, dolphin, and swan Major relationships: Aphrodite loved and was loved by many gods and mortals Had many affairs, 2 famous with Ares and Adonis

7 Myth of Aphrodite Born when Uranus was castrated by his son Cronus and his severed Genitals were thrown into the ocean, which began to foam and bubble. The Trojan prince Paris was asked to judge which of the three goddesses, Athena, Hera, or Aphrodite, was the most beautiful. He chose Aphrodite and then Athena and Hera hoped to bribe Paris with power and victory in battle. Paris was uninterested and Aphrodite offered the love of the most beautiful woman in the world.

9 Myth of Ares Ares and Aphrodite's "secret affair" Aphrodite's husband Hephaestus knew of their affair but needed proof of their treachery. He created an invisible netting to catch the two in the act. Once they were caught he dragged the Olympics for all the gods to laugh at.

10 Athena Symbol Athena-Goddess of wisdom, leadership, handicrafts, agriculture Symbols-sun, golden shield and helmet, owl, the number seven Relationships-daughter of Zeus and Metis, Zeus' first wife. She had no children and was never married

11 Myth of Athena Metis became pregnant by Zeus. He swallowed Metis because he was warned by the Earth that a son would overthrow him. One day Zeus had a headache and suddenly Athena sprang out of his head full grown and was wearing armor. Athena is Zeus' favorite child and he allowed her to use his weapons

12 Demeter Parents: Demeter was a child of the Titans Cronus Symbol and Rhea. Siblings: Demeter had five siblings. Three brothers (Zeus, Poseidon and Hades), and two sisters (Hestia and Hera). Children: Persephone, the goddess of the Underworld

13 Myth of Demeter Demeter is intimately associated with the seasons. Her daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades to be his wife in the underworld. In her anger at her daughter's loss Demeter laid a curse on the world that caused plants to wither and die, the land become desolate. Zeus became alarmed and sought Persephone's return. However, because she had eaten while in the underworld Hades had a claim on her. Therefore, it was decreed that Persephone would spend four months each year in the underworld. During these months Demeter grieves her daughters absence, and withdraws her gifts from the world, creating winter. Her return brought the spring.

16 Hermes Messanger God and the conductor of souls; God of thieves and trickery Symbols-the caduceus(his staff), the purse, ram, and the petasus(his hat) Relationships-son of Zeus and the Mount Nymph Maea. Hermaphroditus and the Satyr, Pan, are his children

17 Myth of Hermes When he was still an infant, he left his cradle and went to Piera. He wanted to steal the cattle from his half-brother, Apollo. He pulled the hooves out of the cows feet and reattached them in reverse order. He hid the herd inside of a cave. When Apollo realized they were gone, he looked at the footprints and was confused. Being the God of prophecy, he discovered who the thief was. He went to Hermes' cave and found Hermes sleeping peacefully. Apollo grabbed Hermes and took him to Zeus to tell him what he had done. When Zeus heard, he found it amusing and laughed, and Hermes was not punished for what he had done

19 Myth of Hephaestus Hephaestus created the first woman, named Pandora. Zeus asked this of him in retaliation of Prometheus, a titan, because he had benefitted mortal men at the expense of the Gods. Pandora was given to the brother of Prometheus, Epimetheus, to be his wife. With her, Pandora brought a jar filled of all evils. She removed the lid and caused the first time for men to be afflicted with hard work and sickness. The only thing that was left and kept in the jar was hope.

20 Hestia Parents: Hestia was the eldest daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Symbol Siblings: Hestia had five siblings. Three brothers (Zeus, Hades and Poseidon), and two sisters (Hera and Demeter). She was never married.

21 Myth of Hestia In myth Hestia was the first born child of Kronos and Rhea who was swallowed by her father at birth. Zeus later forced the old Titan to disgorge Hestia and her siblings. As the first to be swallowed she was also the last to be disgorged, and so was named as both the eldest and youngest of the six Kronides. When the gods Apollo and Poseidon sought for her hand in marriage, Hestia refused and asked Zeus to let her remain an eternal virgin. He agreed and she took her place at his royal hearth.

22 Poseidon(Neptune) Parents: Poseidon was a child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Siblings: Poseidon had five siblings. Two brothers (Zeus and Hades) and three sisters (Hestia, Hera and Demeter). Wife: the sea-goddess Amphitrite. However, according to a tradition, Poseidon was married more than once. Famous Children: the merman Triton and the Nymphs Rhode and Benthesicyme. Symbol

23 Myth of Poseidon Poseidon and Athena were fighting over the patronage. Poseidon struck first, he struck the earth powerfully and created a well with his trident. Immediately, streaming water shot forth, but the water turned out to be salty and not very useful for the population. Cecrops was very impressed by Athena s gift. So he chose Athena to lay claim of the city of Athens and the city was named after her. God Poseidon, however, was not pleased with the decision of Cecrops and cursed the city of Athens to never have enough water from then on. After that, it is said that a major problem of water shortage started in Athens, which continues until nowadays.
