3 Dear colleagues and partners in the MICE industry, We will shortly have the opportunity to meet in Athens for our Second General Assembly and Annual Congress. It would be great if you can be part of this important event, as many of the crucial matters facing our industry will be discussed and analyzed with a top line-up of leading industry professionals. We will have the opportunity to hear from the real decision-makers about what is happening in our business and how they see the future of our profession. It will also be a brilliant opportunity and the right setting in which to meet professionals from many countries and to discuss with them their views about how we can enhance our personal and commercial relationships. Of course, Athens has a lot to offer to everyone, but even more to us as MICE industry professionals. History, culture, gastronomy, folklore and many other great attractions of Greece in general and of Athens in particular, are by themselves strong reasons to visit the country. But in addition, for us, we have a remarkable interest in seeing what Athens has to offer in the way of conference and exhibition venues, hotels and all the other important conference specialists who help to make the Greek capital such an attractive meeting place. For many of us it will also be our first opportunity to see how the city was transformed to make the last Olympic Games such a brilliant success. Our efforts, during recent months, have been devoted to gathering together subject matter and speakers dedicated to illustrating the development of real co-operation between all 25 member states of the European Union and to showcasing solutions on many of the hot challenges currently facing our industry. We hope you will agree that we have succeeded. The Congress in Athens will certainly not become merely a jolly public relations exercise broken up by meals and coffee breaks. Indeed, we are confident that delegates will leave our 2006 Congress armed with new knowledge and lots of ideas about how to create real channels of professional pan-european co-operation backed by a new Code of Ethics and concrete qualitative targets. The subject matter aims to examine the business travel industry s macroeconomics together with the microeconomics of our particular sector. For the first time in a formal setting, officials of the EU will be talking in detail about Europe s attitude towards congress and business tourism. At the same time, the relationships between organizers, specialist suppliers, convention bureaus and the institutional bodies will be discussed analytically and in great detail. All of these matters, of course demand active participation by leading professionals, like yourselves, who are keen to achieve ever better results from your day-to-day business activities. If you are really interested in maximising the impact made by our sector on global communication and understanding, please come to Athens ready to help us all to further develop the aims and role of EFAPCO in the broadest possible European context. 7 GREECE Greece is the southernmost country on the European mainland. A land of which the red soil is sown with stones and rocky mountains, but also with such a rich and unceasing variety in scenery. Greece, a land that has brought forth gods and heroes, philosophers, literature, architecture and art, all of a supreme quality. Greece, being the cradle of western civilization, has had a long and eventful history. It was part of each of the great empires - the Roman, the Byzantine and the Ottoman - that ruled the region. The country has strong historical ties with southeastern and western Europe, Asia and Africa. At the crossroads of so many civilizations, it is gifted with a rich and fascinating cultural heritage. Greece's geopolitical position as well as the country s rich historical and cultural past makes it a destination with distinctive and favourable features for attracting business and convention tourism. Greece is undoubtedly proclaimed by nature and position as a privileged location for this specific type of event. World-renowned beauty spots, ideal climatic conditions year-round, a constant succession of natural sites, great accessibility plus traditional and architectural treasures, interspersed with ancient monuments - all these elements are harmoniously combined in this contemporary European country! It s a country where excellent tourist infrastructure, new airports, luxurious hotels, state-of-theart exhibition and congress centres, delicious and health-consious cuisine are all enhanced by the people who practise their old skills and traditions under the guidance of the father of gods Zeus - the patron saint of hospitality! As the north of Greece borders with other countries its inhabitants have adopted an attitude of constant cultural exchange, even with the remotest places. ATHENS The oldest inhabited city in the world, the cradle of democracy and Western civilization as we know it today, began as a small fortified village built atop the Acropolis rock as far back as years B.C. As is natural, Athens is full of museums and archaeological sites of the utmost interest as, more or less, is all of Greece. The glory of Athens can be understood through a visit to the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, The Museum of Keramikos, and the ancient Acropolis itself, where one of the architectural wonders of the world, the Parthenon, the temple devoted to the goddess Athena, can be seen and admired. Modern Athens is a cosmopolitan city, which offers foreign visitors almost unlimited possibilities for excursions, sightseeing and nightlife. Literally thousands of traditional eating places, taverns, with or without music - but always good - offer inexpensive food, along with hundreds of restaurants of every style and nationality. Numerous night clubs vie for visitors attention, along with the unique Athenian-style open-air cinemas and theatres. All types of shopping are available, from the famed Athens flea market, Monastiraki, to the most sophisticated designer boutiques. Thousands of bars, pubs and cafes including the illustrious souvlaki stands, are ready to meet the needs of a tremendous variety of diners. Today s Athens is a modern city, but it still commands an aura of ancient glories, something which becomes evident on any evening stroll through the old city. 5

8 THE VENUES FOR THE EFAPCO CONGRESS HELEXPO Its unique architecture provides HELEXPO PALACE with highly individual, modern and multifunctional capabilities. THE ATHENS CONCERT HALL The Athens Concert Hall organisation was founded in 1981 and is a nonprofit organisation. Half of the governing board's members are appointed by the Ministry of Culture. The rest are appointed by the Friends of Music Society, also a non-profit organisation. It is a nucleus for culture events, educational activities, major congresses and exhibitions as well as social evolution, an artistic hub structured in a contemporary way. It is living proof of how successful a creative partnership between the state and the private sector can be. The Athens Concert Hall attracts thousands of people who come to enjoy its many art events, outstanding performances and major congresses. 6
