7 Cloze Pegs Book 1 Barbara Mitchelhill illustrated by Bridget MacKeith Notes for Teachers The Cloze Pegs series provides differentiated passages of cloze-type procedure with crosscurricular links suitable for pupils working at Levels 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum in reading. Book 1 is linked to History (Key stage 2) Study Unit 2: Life in Tudor Times. Teachers wishing to use the books simply as language support, will find the passages sufficiently interesting to use independent of a history lesson. Each topic is covered in two pages: page A (the simpler of the two) and page B. Each of these pages can provide three levels of difficulty by simply using a pair of scissors. For example: Tudor Sailors Cutting away the lower block of text provides the simplest work. Giving the pupil the whole page gives a more difficult exercise. Tudor Sailors Cutting away the words from the right side of the page offers the most difficult exercise. Tudor Sailors Thus the Cloze Pegs series provides many levels of difficulty on a given topic so that teachers may tailor the work to suit pupils needs and abilities. In addition to this differentiation, each exercise focuses on a specific part of speech: either nouns, verbs or adjectives which are deleted from the passages. (This is stated at the top of each page.) Whilst it may not be necessary to draw all pupils attention to this fact, those needing to understand parts of speech may find the exercises helpful.
