2 AMADEUS PROVENCE For our French river cruises in 2019 we are delighted to have chartered the elegant Amadeus Provence. Launched in April 2017, she accommodates a maximum of 140 passengers and offers modern and spacious public areas and comfortable, well-appointed cabins. Joining you on board will be a Noble Caledonia team including a Cruise Director, Tour Manager and Guest Speaker. Your Cabin/Suite The accommodation on board is arranged over three of the vessel s four decks and all cabins are outside facing. Cabins feature an en-suite bathroom and are fitted with individual climate control, flat screen television, direct dial telephone, safe, generous closet space and a choice of bed configuration. Cabins measure 17.5m 2 and those on the Mozart and Strauss Deck feature floor to ceiling glass doors which have an automatic drop-down system that can be opened half way. Cabins on the Haydn Deck have smaller panoramic windows that cannot be opened. The eight suites measure 26.4m 2 and feature a mini-bar and walk out exterior balcony. Your Space Full of elegance and charm, the vessel offers plenty of space to unwind and watch the world go by. Spread over four decks, the ship s public spaces include the stylish restaurant which accommodates all guests in one sitting. The Panorama Bar and Lounge is an excellent area for relaxation and socialising with your fellow travellers. Experienced chefs will serve fresh, local ingredients, focusing on both international and local specialties. Lunches are a selection of buffet and served items and dinners are a waiter service affair which will include a choice of fresh fish and meats. 4 TREASURES OF BURGUNDY An eight day river voyage along the Saone 11 th to 18 th April 2019 Leave the crowded roads behind and relax on board our elegant river vessel as she cruises through Burgundy on an eight day journey along the River Saone. Travelling by river offers a marvellous opportunity to slowly absorb the villages, towns and passing countryside; the subtle changes of landscape, lifestyles and architecture can be appreciated fully, and nowhere is this more relevant than along the scenic French waterways. Starting in France s gastronomic capital, Lyon, this leisurely trip will concentrate on Burgundy and all its wonders. We will visit bucolic villages with well-preserved churches and monuments, discover the heritage of the Dukes of Burgundy, and explore historic castles and Medieval fortresses as well as the wine capital, Beaune, with its Hotel Dieu. THE ITINERARY Day 1 London to Lyon, France. Fly by scheduled flight to Lyon or travel by train from London St Pancras. Upon arrival transfer to the Amadeus Provence and embark. Meet your fellow travellers this evening during Welcome Drinks and Dinner as we sail upstream along the River Saone. Day 2 Macon & Cluny. Today we visit Cluny Abbey, once the most powerful Benedictine Abbey of the West. Built in the Romanesque style, it was founded by William I, Duke of Aquitaine in 910. The Abbey was renowned for its strict adherence to the Rule of St Benedict and is the place where the Benedictine Order was formed. Although most of the great Abbey of Cluny stands in ruins, the ruins still suggest the size and glory of the Abbey at its zenith, and imagining it as it once was is part of the attraction. Return to the ship for lunch and enjoy an afternoon sailing. Day 3 Beaune. From Seurre we travel to the principal town of the Cote d Or and here we visit the world-famous 15th century Hospices de Beaune, Vineyards near Macon Eglise Saint-Georges and the Vieux Lyon District Temple of Augustus and Livia, Vienne Eglise St Philibert, Tournus Place Francois Rude, Dijon 4

5 Hospices de Beaune with its remarkably decorated roof, gallery, kitchen and a well-preserved idea of how the beds would have looked in the Grand Salle des Malades. Beaune is a blend of cobbled streets, Medieval half-timbered houses, flowered squares and gardens. After some free time to stroll through the alleys and old streets we return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. Sail this evening during dinner. Cluny Abbey, Macon Day 4 Dijon. Today s excursion will take us to Burgundy s capital and one of the most attractive French cities. Filled with elegant Medieval and Renaissance buildings, Dijon served as the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy from the 11th to 15th centuries. Visit the old town including the Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne with its 18th century Neoclassical façade, and the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot, a former Cistercian abbey and now the headquarters of Chevalier du Tastevin brotherhood. Return to our mooring at St. Jean de Losne for an afternoon at leisure. Day 5 Tournus. Today we visit the charming town of Tournus. On a morning walking tour we will visit the Eglise St Philibert; this magnificent Romanesque church has an austere façade dating from the 10th century. Explore the rest of the town with its wealth of old buildings, alleyways, antique shops and cafes. Set sail during lunch and enjoy a lecture on board. Day 6 Lyon. Today begins with a guided tour of the old part of the city, including the amazingly decorated 19th century hilltop Basilica of Notre Dame. Take a walk through the Halles de Lyon, a famous food market where renowned chefs are often spotted selecting their ingredients. The afternoon is free to wander past the shops and cafes on the banks of the Saone, or perhaps visit the marvellous fabric museum (Musee Historique des Tissus) or the equally fascinating Musee des Beaux-Arts housed in a 17th century Benedictine Abbey. Sail south during dinner to Vienne. Day 7 Vienne. On our morning walking tour of the town of Vienne, we will learn about its Roman era with a visit to the Temple of Augustus & Livia and the Roman theatre located in the centre of town. Also visit the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral St Maurice. Relax on board this afternoon, or enjoy some free time in this delightful spot before joining your fellow travellers for the Farewell Dinner this evening. Sail to Lyon and moor overnight. Day 8 Lyon to London. Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport for the return scheduled flight to London, or travel by train to London St Pancras. Enjoy wine tastings in some of the region s most popular wine-growing areas including Beaujolais where we visit the magnificent cellars of Chateau de Montmelas and THE RHONE DELTA in Cote Chalonnaise we will taste some wines at Chateau de Chamirey, one of the finest producers of Mercurey. We will also visit the famous Cave de Tain whose growers dominate the Hermitage appellation. Our onboard wine expert will be on hand to help us fully appreciate the flavours and history of France s glorious wines. Today we will drive into the charming, rolling countryside of Beaujolais and visit the family owned Chateau de Montmelas. The historic Chateau is located in the heart of the Beaujolais-Villages appellation, overlooking 54 hectares of vineyards, and wine has been produced here since 1566 for the personal consumption of the Marquis and his family. There will be time to wander around before tasting some wines. Arrive back to the ship for lunch and enjoy an afternoon sailing north to Chalon-sur-Saone. Day 3 Beaune & Cote Chalonnaise. This morning we will visit the world famous, 15th century Hospices de Beaune with its remarkably decorated roof, gallery, kitchen and a well-preserved idea of how the beds would have looked in the Grand Salle des Malades. During our guided tour we will travel up Fourviere Hill where we will see Vieux Lyon stretching along the right bank of the Saone, with its districts of St. Jean, St. Paul and St. Georges. St. Jean, with its beautiful houses of the Gothic, Renaissance and late 16th century period, is a splendid example of the glorious era which saw the city become one of the most important centres of trade and banking. Also included in our travels is Les Halles de Lyon, a fabulous gastronomic market. Return to the ship for lunch and enjoy an afternoon at leisure. Wander past the shops and cafes on the banks of the Saone or perhaps visit one of the city s fascinating museums. Sail south this evening during dinner. Day 5 Tournon and Hermitage. This morning we will be moored opposite the imposing hill of Hermitage covered with Syrah vines making some of the finest and most expensive red wines in the entire Rhone Valley. We will visit the famous Cave de Tain whose growers dominate the Hermitage appellation. In addition to Hermitage itself, we will also taste fine Crozes Hermitage and St. Joseph. Day 6 Viviers. Spend the morning in the southern Ardeche town of Viviers, a wonderfully preserved walled town first established by the Romans. Visit the Bishop s Palace, cathedral and La Maison des Chevaliers as well as enjoying the sweeping views over the Rhone valley at the top of the town. Spend the afternoon sailing and enjoy some wine tasting on board. Day 7 Chateauneuf du Pape & Grignan. The rich ruby red wine of Chateauneuf du Pape is one of France s most renowned, but the white, too, is exquisite. Today we will enjoy a wine tasting before continuing to Grignan. A charming hillside village, Grignan was made famous by Madame de Sevigne in her letters. Here we will visit a truffle farm where we will have the chance to taste some of these local delicacies. Continue to Chateau de Grignan which, originally built in the 11th century, was transformed into a luxurious residence during the Renaissance. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Arles sits on a low hill where the Rhone river branches in two parts to the sea. The town dates back to the 7th century BC, and was a major Gallo-Roman city. On this morning s guided walking tour we will see the huge amphitheatre and the former Cathedral of St Trophime, a Romanesque Basilica constructed in the 12th century. We will visit Saint Paul de Mausole where Calanques National Park Vincent Van Gogh was interned for a year. It was here where he painted 150 canvasses, including Olive Grove and Starry Night. After lunch in a local restaurant we will visit Le Jardin de l Albertas. Later transfer to our hotel in Aix-en-Provence. The evening is free to dine independently. Day 2 Aix-en-Provence & Sainte Victoire Mountain. During a guided walking tour this morning we will discover Aix-en-Provence with its leafy boulevards and public squares lined with 17th and 18th century mansions. Fountains hold an important place in the architecture here and the city is also known as the city of a thousand fountains, a name which it more than lives up to with its many beautiful and intricate marble sculpted fountains that can be found in nearly every square. After a visit to the Granet art museum and some free time for lunch, we will drive to Sainte Victoire Mountain, the subject of many of Paul Cezanne s paintings. Day 3 Cassis. We depart this morning for Cassis where we will enjoy a boat trip through the Calanques National Park. Here, long narrow deep fjord like inlets have cut into the limestone cliffs. Return to Aix-en-Provence for an afternoon and evening at leisure. Day 4 Aix-en-Provence to London. Transfer to Marseille or Nice for our scheduled flight to London. On our week long river journey there will be the opportunity to visit the exquisite town of Avignon, the historic city of Nimes and discover some of the impressive Roman sites in Arles and Orange. But, no trip to FRANCE Provence would be complete without some time spent in the surrounding countryside and we will visit Aigues Mortes and take in the wild and beautiful landscape of the Camargue. Today we will enjoy a morning excursion to explore the charming village of Aigues Mortes. Encircled by walls, it was built in the mid 13th century by Louis IX to give the French crown a Mediterranean port under its direct control. Take a scenic drive back through the Camargue to the ship the region is best known for its incredibly varied wildlife and white horses. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon on board sailing upstream. Day 3 Avignon, Pont du Gard & Uzes. Our walking tour this morning will concentrate on the Palais des Papes, the huge Gothic Palace of the Popes which was built in the 14th century as a fortified palace for the pontifical court. Sail during lunch and this afternoon drive to the nearby Pont du Gard, the impressive Roman aqueduct built in the first century as part of a system to bring water to Uzes and Nimes. Later, continue to historic Uzes, a gem of a town with a captivating history and some imposing and very beautiful buildings including the castle of the Ducs d Uzes. 9 Pont du Gard Day 4 Orange & Viviers. This morning we have a half day tour to visit Orange, site of the greatest of all Roman theatres to survive in the West. The magnificent, semicircular Theatre Antique, situated in the centre of town, was built just before the birth of Christ. Accommodating 7000 spectators, its acoustics are superb. This is also the only Roman theatre still possessing its original Imperial statue of Caesar Augustus, which, at 12 feet in height, is one of the tallest in existence. Sail this evening for Viviers. Perhaps enjoy an evening stroll in this charming village. Day 5 Ardeche Gorges. From our mooring at Viviers, we will visit the Ardeche Gorges with its magnificent scenery, most notably the spectacular limestone cliffs and the Pont d Arc, the largest natural arch in Europe. Return to the ship for lunch. Enjoy a lecture on board as we sail to Avignon. Day 6 St Remy de Provence & Les Baux de Provence. This morning enjoy a half day tour to St Remy de Provence, proud possessor of one of the truly great funerary memorials of the Roman world, the cenotaph erected in honour of the grandsons of Augustus, Gaius and Lucius also the Romanesque cloister of St-Paul-de-Mausole at Egalieres. Return to the ship for lunch before enjoying an afternoon excursion to Les Baux de Provence. Located on a rocky plateau in the hilly Alpilles, the town provides a breathtaking panoramic view over Arles and the Camargue. It has been patiently restored and now boasts a historical and architectural heritage consisting of 22 listed buildings. Day 7 Nimes & Arles. This morning there will be a tour to the city of Nimes, one of the finest examples of prosperous Gallo-Roman settlements in southern France. Originally named Nemausus (for the local god of spring), the city served as a regional Celtic capital. Though succumbing to Roman control in 121 BC, the city s continued importance was assured by its location on the Via Domitia, the main Roman road between northern Italy and Spain. The best-known monument of Nimes is the Maison Carree, a remarkably well-preserved oblong Roman temple built during the 1st century AD, featuring exquisite carvings along the cornice and on the Corinthian capitals. Today, the building is a museum and contains an imposing statue of Apollo. Return to the ship, which will have sailed to Arles to meet us, for lunch on board. Our final afternoon will be spent exploring Arles. See the huge amphitheatre and the former Cathedral of St Trophime, a Romanesque Basilica constructed in the 12th century. THE ITINERARY Day 1 Marseille. Disembark this morning and drive to Marseille where we will visit the Mucem Museum. This unique museum, dedicated to European and Mediterranean civilisations, opened in June 2013 and houses more than 350,000 objects, as well as a large assortment of documents and works of art. This afternoon we will enjoy lunch in a local restaurant and later we will transfer to our hotel in Aix-en- Provence. The evening is free to dine independently.
