2 MV Aegean Odyssey T he MV Aegean Odyssey is a premium class ship that was rebuilt to cater for cruising in the coastal waters of the central and southern Mediterranean. Originally a mid-size vessel carrying up to 570 passengers, the new configuration includes generously sized suites, junior suites, staterooms and cabins with and without balconies, which means she now accommodates an average of 350 guests. The vessel provides the best features of a mid-size ship such as passenger space, a choice of restaurants and stability in inclement weather. She also has the personal service and intimate surroundings of a small ship. for relaxation and quiet when desired, as well as ample room for socialising with new found friends. There is also a lecture theatre, a library, shop and internet centre. The on-board library features an extensive range of volumes covering classical history, literature, art, architecture and philosophy. To attend to the body as well as the mind, you can relax on the sweeping sun decks and cool off in the outdoor pool. There is also a fully-equipped gym with lockers and showers, sauna, massage and beauty treatment rooms and early morning yoga. The hairdressers and beauty centre are located on the Belvedere Deck adjacent to the reception area. The Terrace Cafe Your Suite/Stateroom/Cabin All suites, staterooms and cabins are en suite and feature a bath and/or shower, flat screen TV, safe, hair dryer and are fully air-conditioned. Guests in Balcony Class (categories A to D) will also enjoy: a stateroom or suite with balcony, a welcome bottle of Champagne, a fridge stocked with soft drinks, complimentary bottled water, robe and slippers and Molton Brown bathroom amenities. The sizes, layout and bed configuration will vary within a category. Beds may be fixed double (queen size), fixed separate twin beds or twin beds that can be converted into a double bed. All outside staterooms and cabins have windows except Category J most of which have portholes. Your Space On board you will find two restaurants; the Marco Polo Restaurant on the Marco Polo Deck and the Terrace Café on the Promenade Deck which has a beautiful outdoor seating area so passengers can enjoy dining al fresco in warm weather. There are four bars on board and three lounges so there will always be space Dining The MV Aegean Odyssey offers numerous dining spaces and a varied, sumptuous cuisine. As well as being one of the world s most historically interesting and naturally beautiful destinations, the Mediterranean is home to an unsurpassed culinary tradition. The gastronomic culture of using the very best fresh local ingredients cooked in a simple but delicious and healthy style is the inspiration for the restaurants aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey. The most elegant of the ship s restaurants, the Marco Polo has a casual country-club ambience and Oriental and Mediterranean inspired food. At lunch, you can choose from a variety of starters, three dishes of the day and a choice of desserts, fruit and cheese. In the evening, dinner will include appetisers, soup, salads, a choice of three or four main courses and desserts. The complimentary house wines are carefully sourced from Italy, Spain, France and Greece. There is also a full wine list of alternative vintages available. With a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, sophisticated interior design and cooking on the open grill, the Terrace Café replicates the charm and ambience of a trattoria. As well as the grill, there is a large buffet. The day starts in the Terrace Café with breakfast where you can enjoy a healthy combination of yogurt, fruit and muesli or indulge in eggs, bacon or an omelette. Every afternoon you will find a selection of freshly-prepared sandwiches, cakes and scones served in the Terrace Café or the Charleston Lounge. In the evenings, Tapas on the Terrace recreates the informal yet sophisticated atmosphere of a European bistro. Equal care has been given to the selection of included wines served at Tapas on the Terrace; these will be served at your table by our helpful waiting staff. For those passengers enjoying a late night discussing the excitement of the day s sightseeing, a selection of light snacks freshly prepared by the on board chefs will be available in the Charleston Lounge. 2

4 French Riviera & Moorish Spain An early summer voyage from Nice to Seville aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey 2 nd to 15 th June 2016 From the contemporary masterpiece of Gaudi s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Moorish marvel of the Alhambra in Granada to the Great Mosque of Cordoba, this journey will show you the most elegant and fascinating architectural and artistic treasures to be found in this renown d, romantic land! This fascinating itinerary also includes an added gem: a cruise along the Guadalquivir River to moor in the heart of Andalusian Seville. Fly to Nice by scheduled flight and on arrival transfer to the MV Aegean Odyssey. FRANCE Marseilles Port-la-Nouvelle Day 2 Nice. A day in the delightful French Riviera resort of Nice. You can spend it relaxing on the beach, shopping in sophisticated boutiques, or alternatively join the excursion to Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco or head for the charming Provencal hill town of St Paul-de-Vence. Day 3 Sailing to Marseilles. Enjoy a relaxing day at sea as you sail along the Cote d Azur passing Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Tropez on the way to Marseilles for an evening arrival. Day 4 Marseilles for Avignon. Today we explore the Provencal countryside and two ancient towns on the full-day tour that visits Avignon with its papal legacies and Arles, once a crossroads of the Roman Empire. The highlight of the visit to Avignon is a guided tour of the Pope s Palace with its long, echoing Great Audience Hall, 14thcentury wall paintings and Great Chapel. Though a mere 25 miles from Avignon, the town of Arles seems centuries removed with its well-preserved Roman monuments and we will see many of them on this afternoon s walking tour which passes Cafe de Forum, Republic Square and the 17th-century Town Hall. Day 5 Port-La-Nouvelle for Carcassonne. Relive centuries of history during our visit to two cities with Roman roots: the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Carcassonne, an outstanding MEDITERRANEAN SEA Nice example of a Medieval fortified town, continuously occupied for over 2500 years. Encircled by double walls, this stronghold stands exactly as it did in the Middle Ages with miles of battlements, 52 towers and a castle. View the mighty gate with its chains, portcullis and intricate access system. Stroll the lists between the double walls and savour the atmosphere as you learn about military architecture. Day 6 Barcelona, Spain. Descend to a unique underground museum for a glimpse of everyday life in Barcino, as Roman Barcelona was called. Hidden under the Medieval buildings and squares of Barcelona s Gothic Quarter is a town of far greater antiquity. Roman troops arrived here during the Punic Wars (264 to 146BC) and remained for over 600 years, putting their imprint on the language, law and culture. Visit one of Europe s largest underground archaeological sites at the Barcelona City History Museum. Stroll metal walkways through workaday Barcino with its laundry, dye shop, salted fish factory and wine shop to get a slice of life 20 centuries ago. Day 7 Valencia. Enjoy the charm of Valencia s squares and hidden corners on a walk through this fascinating city. See the City of Arts and Sciences, the Museu de les Ciencies and Plaza de la Reina. Discover the historical centre, visit the Cathedral, and one of the most astonishing Gothic civil buildings in the world, La Lonja, which was declared Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO. Day 8 At sea. A relaxing day at sea. Spend time on deck and attend a lecture or two. 4

5 Alhambra Palace Day 9 Malaga for Granada. Leave the port of Malaga and drive through the wonderful landscape of Andalucia passing endless fields of olive trees and picturesque villages. Your journey takes you to one of the most magical places in the world and the most outstanding symbol of Moorish heritage in Spain, the Alhambra. From the beginning of the 13th century, the original fortress grew into a huge walled site that was clearly intended to be both a palace and a court. Within this gradual change, different stages of development, grandeur and decadence can clearly be seen through the various works of art and buildings erected over the years. The Alhambra was not a single construction, but rather the result of an evolution of successive reforms and extensions. Continuing on the tour we will visit the Generalife Palace which was built as the summer paradise for the Sultans of Granada. Its lovely terraces, grottoes, flowerbeds and fabulous fountains will make you feel the glamour of the Moorish inhabitants. After taking in all of these wonderful sites we will enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. Finally, and to round the day off, you will enjoy a panoramic tour around the city of Granada before returning to Malaga and the MV Aegean Odyssey. Day 10 Tangier, Morocco. Situated only a short distance across the Strait of Gibraltar from the shores of Europe, Tangier is a gateway to a vastly different culture. Travelling along the promenade, you will arrive at Hercules Grotto, where legend has it Hercules rested after digging the Strait of Gibraltar. Continue to Cape Spartel Lighthouse; more than a century old it shines a warning beacon to ships sailing between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Arriving back in Tangier, visit the old town where your guide will walk you through the Medina and the Kasbah, allowing you the opportunity to view the fruit and vegetable market and Mendoubia Park where you can explore at leisure, if you wish. Day 11 Cadiz. Cadiz has long been considered a bridge between Europe and Africa and was the gateway to the Americas during the age of discovery. You will appreciate its atmosphere and history during a drive through the city from the delightful ancient seaport, passing the 18th century baroque cathedral, Plaza Espana and the gardens where the famous monument of Las Cortes (Spanish Parliament) of 1812 is situated. The cathedral with its famous towering golden domes acts as a landmark against the Cadiz skyline, and the famous composer Manuel de Falla is buried here. We continue inland to the historic town of Jerez de la Frontera which is home to dozens of sherry companies, and a visit will be made to the well-known Bodega Gonzalez Byass, which produces some of the most delicious sherry in the world. Later, cruise along the Guadalquivir River for an evening arrival in Seville where we will moor overnight in the heart of the city. Day 12 Seville, Spain. Seville is a beautiful and romantic place. Legend has it this Andalucian city was founded 3,000 years ago by Hercules and it is also said to be the birthplace of flamenco. Your tour will, we trust, give you a flavour of this intoxicating place. Your starting place is a spectacular one; admire the exterior of the 15-century cathedral of Seville; it Medina, Tangier Great Mosque, Cordoba is the third largest in Europe and one of the last built in the Gothic style. It has been said that if heaven does exist than it probably looks like Seville s Royal Palace Alcazar, a functioning royal palace and some of the Upper Royal Quarters are still used by the Spanish royal family. Finally, stroll through the Old Jewish Quarter of Santa Cruz with its labyrinth of narrow streets and lovely Moorish courtyards. 6 A Taste of Madeira, Canaries & Morocco An exploration from Seville to Malaga aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey 13 th to 28 th November 2016 Enjoy some winter warmth and cultural delights during this voyage aboard the MV Aegean Odyssey from Seville to Madeira, the Canary Islands and Morocco. In 1951, Winston Churchill wanted to retreat somewhere warm, bathable, comfortable and flowery where he could paint and work on his war memoirs. Wisely, he chose Madeira. During our visit you will see Camara de Lobos, one of the villages that inspired Churchill to paint, and also have enough free time to explore the famous Botanical Gardens. Sail from the historical Spanish mainland port of Cadiz, and head to the Canary Islands, where you will travel to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and journey deep inland to Fuerteventura a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with its historic churches and rugged landscapes. Before reaching Morocco and a chance to experience Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier and Marrakesh, plus the exciting city of Taroudant, there is time to call at the port of El Marsa. From here you will venture into the sand dunes of the Western Sahara Desert and experience one of the great wildernesses of the world. GUEST SPEAKER Professor Brian Williams Brian is the Emeritus Professor of Geology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and holds professorial positions in the Universities of Manchester and Bristol, UK, and Cork and Dublin in Ireland. He has also held university teaching positions in Canada and the USA. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a Member of the Energy Institute, and has published over 100 papers and several books. He has made TV appearances in the UK, USA and Far East and presented Radio programmes for the BBC. Brian gained his PhD in sedimentary geology from the University of Wales far too many years ago to admit to, and in 2004 was awarded a D.Sc. degree in recognition of his global contribution to sedimentary research. He is a consultant to the Oil Industry and several small geological companies, and has lectured on Voyages to Antiquity cruises since His studies have taken him to Australia, SE Asia, Middle East, Europe and North America which has given him the opportunity to share his enthusiasm for rocks and earth processes with adult education classes, industry personnel and students alike. 7 Cadiz Cathedral Botanical Gardens, Funchal Laayoune Desert, Western Sahara coast road to the picturesque fishing village of Camara de Lobos, once painted by Sir Winston Churchill. Continue on through eucalyptus forests to reach Cabo Girao. From a superb viewpoint, see the second highest sea cliff in the world and mountain slopes that have been carved into terraces. A couple more scenic viewpoints await you before you return to the MV Aegean Odyssey. Day 7 Funchal. Enjoy a day to explore at leisure. Perhaps take a cocktail at Reid s Hotel, visit the Botanical Gardens or taste Madeira s famous wine before we set sail early this evening. Day 8 La Palma, Canary Islands. Sailing into the harbour of Santa Cruz on La Palma island you are greeted by the island s stunning volcanic landscape. Today there will be a choice of two excursions. Exploring La Palma, your tour will take you to the highest point of the island, home to the charming town of El Paso, then on to the southern tip of La Palma and Fuencaliente. Or travel inland to the Caldera de Taburiente. Designated a National Park, this particular volcanic crater is five miles wide and its rims reach right up to the mountain ridge that runs from the north to the south of the island. Day 9 Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura might be known for its amazing beaches, but there is a lot more to this island. During today s guided tour we will travel deep inland to discover forgotten villages dotted with whitewashed houses, beautiful old churches and hidden cobbled streets. We will visit the traditional former capital, Betancuria, and the picturesque village of Pajara. View the island s rugged interiors from one of the highest points in Fuerteventura, serving up panoramic views of the countryside below. Day 10 El Marsa, Western Sahara Desert. From the port of El Marsa drive across the sand dunes through one of the world s great desert landscapes to the city of Laayoune. There are not many travellers who can boast of a visit to the territory of the Western Sahara mostly consisting of flat desert it is one of the least populated regions in the world. Take in the unique Spanish- Saharan architecture in the old town, visit the catholic church and see the food and artisan markets. Day 11 At sea. Day 12 Agadir for Taroudant & Marrakech, Morocco. Arrive at the southern Moroccan port of Agadir and drive through the fertile Souss Valley to the old imperial city of Taroudant where we will explore the medina with its ancient souks before an afternoon drive through the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech where we will overnight in a hotel. Day 13 Marrakech & Casablanca. Spend the morning on a guided tour of the top sites of this atmospheric city: stroll along labyrinthine alleyways of the Old Quarter, catching glimpses of mosques, hammams and traditional public bakeries. We will also visit the Marjorelle Gardens, a haven of peace and beauty, and continue on foot through the colourful souks. Emerge onto the famous Djemma el Fna Square, where throughout the ages local people and African caravans have gathered. Here we stop at the foot of the famous Koutoubia Minaret, one of the masterpiece works of Islamic architecture. This afternoon we drive to Casablanca to re-join the ship. Day 14 Casablanca. Located on the Atlantic coast, Rabat, meaning fortified place is the focus of our tour today. Highlights include the old medina, the picturesque Kasbah of the Oudayas and the Oudaya Gate, built during the Almohad dynasty, the well-preserved Hassan Tower and the Chellah which were built by the Merinids in the 12th and 13th centuries. Afternoon at leisure before an evening sailing. Day 15 Tangier. Enjoy a leisurely morning at sea before we arrive in Tangier. Travelling along the promenade, you will arrive at the caves of Hercules, a place of stunning natural beauty where legend has it Hercules rested after his 12 labours.
