1 Celebrations were held on the 3rd November, 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey (around 60 people attended) under support of: EMBLAS Project: Improving Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea; PERSEUS Project: Policy-oriented marine Environmental Research for the Southern European Seas; IRIS-SES Project: Integrated Regional Monitoring Implementation Strategy in the South European Seas and MISIS Project: MSFD Guiding improvements in the Black Sea Integrated Monitoring System.

2 Our partners from COCONET Project, Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TUDAV), Waste Free Oceans Turkey Mutlu Balık and Black Sea NGO Network also joined the celebrations and had a chance to present their relevant activities; Two videos prepared by TUDAV "We need more MPA's" and "Story of the Alien Species Rapana venosa in the Black Sea were broadcasted;

3 The Black Sea medalists for 2014 are: Ms. Violeta Roiatchka from Bulgaria; Ms. Maia Ochigava from Georgia, Ms. Valeria Abaza from Romania; Mr. Evgeny Belan from Russian Federation; Prof.Dr. Erdoğan OKUŞ from Turkey and Mr. Ievgen Patlatiuk from Ukraine.

4 Prof.Dr. Erdoğan OKUŞ was awarded by the Black Sea Medal Award posthumously. He passed away during the research cruise in His beloved nephew collected the glass statue for him. The audience commemorated Prof. Okuş, his outstanding personality and extreme dedication to the Black Sea, by the minute of silence. The rest of nominees received their medals from Prof. Sur and had a chance to say a few words on their contribution to the protection of the Black Sea environment.

5 Two prominent scientists, admirers of the Black Sea, unfortunately have passed away in the year 2014: Prof. Victor Zaika and Prof. Laurence Mee. The Permanent Secretariat presented the glass statues posthumously to be given to their relatives in the memories of their great contribution to the protection of the Black Sea environment and outstanding scientific achievements. Dr. Violeta Velikova prepared a presentation devoted to life of these prominent people, with some words of gratitude.

6 Presentation of activities of Projects in support of the Black Sea regional cooperation: EMBLAS Project, PERSEUS Project; IRIS-SES Project; MISIS Project. The round table was followed by the discussion. Content-oriented and interactive PERSEUS presented to the attention of Black Sea Commission and Black Sea scientific community the hands-on experience on the new tool Adaptive Marine Policy Toolbox produced within its dedicated working package.

9 The Black Sea Day was also celebrated in Constanta, Romania Together with the Natural Sciences Museum Complex of Constanta, NIMRD was coorganizer of the symposium Black Sea Past, Present and Future, held on 31 October, in the Conference Hall of the Complex; work visit to the Natural Sciences Museum Complex of Constanta of the 20 members of the Junior Ranger ecologist club from the 2 May Elementary School was arranged; The Black Sea Day Chess Challenge 2014 was hosted by NIMRD on 1 November 2014 and was organized by NIMRD in partnership with the Fianchetto Chess Club from Constanta, the Balkan Environmental Association (B.EN.A.) and the European Environmental Association (A.E.M.); NIMRD experts took this opportunity to familiarize the young participants and their parents to the aspects concerning the need to protect the marine environment. Also, all participants were introduced to the main goals of the PERSEUS and CoCoNET projects.

11 The capacity building Workshop (30 October) and International Black Sea Day event (31 October) were organized within ILMM-BSE Workshop (The Integrated Land-Use Management Modeling of Black Sea Estuaries (ILLM-BSE) Project) in cooperation with the FP7 IASON Project Caravan Workshop.
