9 CONFERENCE VENUE Captain Miša s Mansion Captain Miša s Mansion, at Students Square 1, was built between 1858 and 1863 as the private palace of Miša Anastasijević, the Danube Captain and the wealthiest person in Serbia at the time. It was designed by the Czech Jan Nevole, who also left behind a number of other architectural works around Belgrade. Built as a palace, it was presented as a gift to the Serbian people for educational and cultural purposes (the inscription on the main façade states Miša Anastasijević to his fatherland ). It was the greatest and most beautiful mansion in Serbia at the time. Its architecture represents a mix of various styles, cultures and epochs, mostly presenting elements of renaissance and romanticism. In accordance with the wishes of the donor, the building housed nearly all significant educational and cultural institutions in the Principality of Serbia the Ministry of Education, the Grand School (forerunner to the University), the First Belgrade Gymnasium, National Museum, a gallery of paintings and a library. The building now houses the Belgrade University Rectorate and parts of the Faculty of Philosophy, and stands for the administration and governance building of the University of Belgrade. Captain Miša's Mansion was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia. The Ceremonial Hall was occasionally used for sessions of the National Assembly ( ) and the Senate ( ). It stands for one of the most beautiful ceremonial halls in the country, and in 2018 it will host the UNICA Rectors Seminar. For more information on Belgrade architecture, please visit the official website of the Tourist Organization of Belgrade. Read more about cultural properties in Belgrade at: 9

10 UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE Two centuries ago, on September 13 th 1808, the first lessons started at the back then called Great School, today the University of Belgrade, founded by one of the leading regional intellectuals and philosophers of the time Dositej Obradović. Since then, the University of Belgrade celebrates September 13 th as the Day of the University. This year we are especially honored to contribute to our 210 th anniversary by hosting many international events throughout the year of 2018, including the prestigious UNICA Rectors Seminar on May 24 and 25. The University of Belgrade has been ranked amongst the top 300 universities in the world (2017), at possibly the most prestigious global ranking list published by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and carried out by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, better known as the Shanghai List, with the top ranking in 17 scientific fields specifically. For these impressive results in global ranking, the University of Belgrade owes its gratitude to its teachers and researchers and their devoted and diligent work at all times. Our position in the Balkans and South-Eastern Europe, standing at the intersection of roads connecting all four sides of the globe, represents the ideal background for developing high academic standards in teaching and research. The University of Belgrade offers a spectrum of study programs in diverse scientific areas. We educate students in order to turn them into well-qualified professionals in their respective fields. The University of Belgrade consists of 31 faculties and 11 institutes, whose more than students and 5000 teaching and research staff work in more than 350 study programs across numerous academic fields. Being one of the largest universities in the wider region, and top-ranked at global lists, the University of Belgrade has highly developed International Cooperation. With partners across the globe, more than 250 active bilateral agreements, more than 200 Erasmus+ agreements, and memberships in various international universities networks, it offers its students and partners a comprehensive offer for international experience and cooperation. During the two centuries of its existence the University of Belgrade has served its people, and its former students and teachers have greatly contributed to the development of cultural, scientific, educational, political and economic life of our country. Furthermore, we still proudly remember the students and professors of the University of Belgrade who left a significant mark in the Yugoslav struggle against fascism. After the war the University saw rapid expansion and grew into one of the largest universities in the Balkans. Under its auspices, almost all state universities in Serbia were founded, as well as a number of universities in the region. For more information, please visit: 10

11 THE CITY OF BELGRADE Belgrade is an exceptionally vibrant and outspoken city. Its history dates back to the 6th millennium BC, when the Vinča Culture, one of the most important prehistoric cultures of Europe, evolved with its epicenter within Belgrade s area. Many cultures and tribes left their mark in its long and turbulent history: Thraco-Dacians, Celts, Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, Ottomans, Austro-Hungarians, have all shaped today s capital of Serbia into one of the most diverse and interesting cities of South-East Europe. Even one of the first Buddhist temple in Europe was built in Belgrade. A walk through the city s center would bring quick shifts of architectural and emotional settings from a monumental medieval fortress or a 16th century Ottoman mosque, through elegant Habsburg buildings and the Saint Sava temple one of the largest Eastern Orthodox Churches in the world, to the Palace of Serbia - the monumental example of the 20th century Yugoslav modernism, or shiny contemporary business buildings. An instant cross-culture and time-travel experience. With its population of 1,23 million in the urban area, Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and the largest city in the Western Balkans. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers, at the very border of the Pannonian Plain and the Balkans the city s favorite spot for watching stunning sunsets. Recent years have seen a significant increase in Belgrade s expat community, ranging from students to business and industry professionals, making much of the city s content inclusive for English-speaking visitors with various cultural backgrounds. In many ways Belgrade appeals mostly to young people who easily become an integral part of its vibrant pace and atmosphere. 11

12 CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT Belgrade is probably best known for its vibrant nightlife. Whether you want to experience traditional music and cuisine in the bohemian street of Skadarlija, or to party until the sun comes up at one of the many river-boat clubs and bars the famous splavovi or indoor clubs with local and international DJs or live performances, the city will offer an unforgettable experience even to the most demanding guests. Besides that, Belgrade will surprise you with numerous concerts, music, art & film festivals and cultural events throughout the year: Furthermore, great variety of galleries and museums will introduce you to Serbian contemporary and traditional art, cultural and historical heritage.
