It is the seat of the Vrhbosanski Archbishop, currently Cardinal Vinko Puljić, and center of Catholic worship in the city. The Cathedral is located in the city's Old Town district. The Cathedral of Jesus' Heart was built in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an important Catholicconcept. Architect Josip Vancaš modeled it after the Notre-Dame de Paris using the neo-gothic style and elements of Romanesque architecture. Work began on August 25, 1884, and was completed in the same month in The Bishop of Dubrovnik was present for the opening. The building was damaged during the Siege of Sarajevo, but was not completely destroyed, and the damage has since been repaired. The building is often used as a symbol of the city: The design above the door to the Cathedral is part of the flag and seal of Sarajevo Cantonand the Romanesque towers are featured on the flag and coat of arms of Sarajevo. Markale was bombed two times, first in February 1994 and second in August First, is important in terms of casualties and second is important in terms of initiating the NATO military intervention. The main entrance is located on Ferhadija and backs onto Mula Mustafe Baseskije (where there is a plaque on the wall with the names of the victims). The street that runs between the two roads is called Gajevo trg. Address: Markale Market Place, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Adam Jones, Ph.D. C) Eternal Flame The Eternal flame is a memorial to the military and civilian victims of the Second World War in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The memorial was dedicated on 6 April 1946, the first anniversary of the liberation of Sarajevo from the four year long occupation by Nazi Germany and the Independent State of Croatia. The memorial is located in the centre of Sarajevo at the corner the Marshall Tito street and the main Sarajevo pedestrian street, Ferhadija. In the very early morning of Sunday, 2 January 2011, the Vječna vatra was suddenly, freakishly extinguished by (or self-extinguished before) a gathering of revellers, who quickly scattered. Yet, the Eternal flame was heroically reignited less than 20 seconds later by a passing tourist, who witnessed what had happened and ran up to risk life and limb in order to preserve the great Yugoslav memorial's continuity. The city of Sarajevo received it as a gift from Italy. The man is looking high into the sky and holds the meridians of Earth, the man is also assisted in his task by several pigeons. Address: Trg Oslobođenja Square, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Damir Mišić E) Serb Orthodox Cathedral The Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos is the largest Serbian Orthodox church in Sarajevo and one of the largest in the Balkans. The cathedral is dedicated to the nativity of the Theotokos. It was erected at the request of the Orthodox parish of Sarajevo between 1863 and The church is constructed as a three-section basilica inscribed in a cross-shaped plan, and has five domes. The domes are built on the beams; the central one is much larger than the other four side domes. The church is arched by round elements. The small gilded baroque-style belfry is built in front of the entrance. The interior walls are decorated by painted ornaments. In the lower zones of the walls the painted ornaments are simulating the marble stone construction look. Arches and vaults are decorated in ornaments only. In 1898, the Orthodox Metropolitan Palace was built near the cathedral. The head master for construction was Andreja Damjanov, a man from the Damjanovi-Renzovski family of master builders, masons, painters, iconographers, carpenters and stonecutters from the village of Papradishte near Veles, Macedonia. 6 Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 6 - F) Museum of Literature and Performing Arts Established in 1961, the museum is the brainchild of Razija Handžić, who had the idea since 1955, when he worked as a curator for the Museum of Sarajevo. The Museum of Literature and Performing Arts was at first known as the Museum of Literature, and 16 years later was officially established as the Museum of Literature and Performing Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The museum is housed in an old building that once belonged to the Despić family. Among the items you may find there are books, magazines, photos, manuscripts, paintings, portraits, and many more. Address: Sime Milutinovića Sarajlije 7, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Flickr and Herry Lawford G) Despić House Taking into account the style and the construction materials used for the building, the Despic House was most likely built between 17th and 19th centuries. According to some studies, the structure we see today was the result of joining two adjacent houses. Its present appearance is the work of Franjo Linardić and Franjo Moise. The Despic House was the home to the first home theater in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The theater room was turned into a museum in the 60s. Address: Despićeva 2, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Smooth_O H) Sarajevo Assassination Memorial Plaque On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot dead in Sarajevo, by Gavrilo Princip, one of a group of six Bosnian Serb assassins coordinated by Danilo Ilić. The political objective of the assassination was to break off Austria-Hungary's south-slav provinces so they could be combined into a Greater Serbia or a Yugoslavia. The assassins' motives were consistent with the movement that later became known as Young Bosnia. Serbian military officers stood behind the attack. Thus, in that very place, in front of Sarajevo City Museum, where the Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 6 -
7 Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 7 - assassination took place, a memorial plaque has been built into the wall. Address: Memorial Plaque, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Michael Büker. Sight description based on wikipedia I) Sarajevo City Museum (must see) The Sarajevo City Museum is housed in a building in front of which the assassination of Franz Ferdinand took place. Its permanent exhibition, called Sarajevo , displays items related to Austria-Hungarian period. The exhibitions at Sarajevo City Museum are divided according to themes, such as: Sarajevo resistance, the local culture, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife, and some other historical events of the period. Address: Zelenih beretki 1, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Smooth_O J) Latin Bridge (must see) Latin Bridge is a historic Ottoman bridge over the River Miljacka in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The northern end of the bridge was the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by Gavrilo Princip in 1914, which became a casus belli of World War I. Judging by its foundation, it is the oldest among the preserved bridges in the city. The census of the Sanjak of Bosnia from 1541 mentions the bridge on this spot, built by the leather-worker Hussein, son of Sirmerd. This first bridge seems to have been made of wood, because the court record from 1565 witness that the stone bridge was built here by eminent citizen of Sarajevo Ali-Ajni Beg. Someone worked out that the year when it was rebuilt can be obtained from the numerical values in the word 'Briga' it is 1213 which by Islamic calendar equals the year of the reconstruction 1798/99. The bridge has four arches and rests on three strong pillars and the embankment; it is built of stone and gypsum and the two relieving openings, 'eyes' in the mass above pillars are so characteristic that they can be seen in the seal of Sarajevo. Because of heavy traffic at the time of Austria-Hungary, the pavements on consoles were added to the bridge. Sight description based on wikipedia K) Music Pavilion Built in 1913, the Music Pavilion was designed by Josip Pospišil and it is the only music pavilion in Sarajevo today. It is located in a place that has changed its name and purpose several times. In the 17th century, there was a hippodrome (hence the name Atmejdan), which in 1878 was converted to a square. Later the space was transformed into the Franje Josipa Park. Music Pavilion was demolished at the beginning of World War II and was rebuilt in The new design of the pavilion was based on the original drawings from the period of Austro-Hungarian rule. Address: Music Pavilion, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Christian Bickel L) Emperor's Mosque The Emperor's Mosque is an important landmark in Sarajevo, being the first mosque to be built (1457) after the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia. It is the largest single-subdome mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina, built in the classical Ottoman style of the era. The original mosque was built in the mid-fifteenth century and has a long and fascinating history. Damaged and totally destroyed at the end of that century, it was rebuilt in 1565 and dedicated this time to Suleyman the Lawgiver, one of the most splendid and renowned Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The first mosque was made of wood and significantly smaller than existing building that was built in Side rooms were added in 1800 and connected to the central prayer area in Between 1980 and 1983 the painted decorations in the interior of the mosque were conserved and restored. The burial ground (graveyard) beside the Emperor's Mosque contains the graves of viziers, mullahs, muftis, sheikhs, the employees in the Emperor's Mosque, along with other prominent figures living in Sarajevo. The mosque was damaged during World War II but mostly in the wars during the 1990s, and renovation work is pending. The first settlements in Sarajevo were built around the mosque with the Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 8 -
9 Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 9 - residence of the Sultan's representatives then being built next to the mosque. Isa-bey also built a hammam (public bath) and a bridge that led directly to the mosque. This bridge was disassembled during the Austro-Hungarian government and rebuilt just a few meters upstream where it still exists today. Address: Obala Isa-bega Ishakovića, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Image Courtesy of Wikimedia and Julian Nitzsche. Sight description based on wikipedia M) The Emperor s Bridge The first bridge over the Miljacka River was built in 1462 and led from Kolobara to the Emperor s Mosque. During the Austro-Hungarian administration, the bridge was demolished. Later, a concrete bridge was built in the place of the old one, that led to the Konak Street. The Emperor s Bridge is one of the most important structures from old Sarajevo, along with the small shops on both banks of the river that create an atmosphere of the past. Don't miss the opportunity to cross this full of history bridge.
