9 Past & Present Folkloric Ensembles Folkloric ensemble Ravna Gora, Serbian Centre, Bonnyrigg Synonymously known as the heart of Serbia, central Serbian dances are well known for their intricacy, playful tendencies between men and women, and beautiful coloured costumes which girls traditionally made on their own by hand. Ravna Gora presents dances from Central Serbia, original choreography by Desanka Djordjevic, artistic director of this ensemble is Goran Nikolic. Ensemble Oplenac, Cultural Arts Association Karadjordje Ensemble Oplenac perform dances Serbian traditional dances from the Bosanska Posavina region of Bosnia. These dances are well known for their comic like songs, and playful interaction between the men and women. These dances would have been performed at various festivities, feast days, and weddings. Choreographed by Aleksandar Popovic. Senior Group, CSO St. Lazarus, Alexandria Prizren is a beautiful medieval town located approximately 400km south west from Belgrade, on the slopes of the Šar mountain through which the pure and swift waters of the Bistrica river flow. The beauty and uniqueness of Prizren s architecture was recognized by UNESCO in 2006 when the Bogorodica Ljeviška church was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List.The senior folkloric group from St Lazarus in Alexandria perform dances depicting Serbian wedding traditions from Prizren during the 19th century when the city was a thriving economic and cultural centre in Kosovo and Metohija. Choreographed by Lily Nikolic. Ensemble Rastko, CSO St Stefan, Rooty Hill The name of the village in Serbian translates to Black Grass. The origin of the name dates back to 1389, when Battle of Kosovo took place. A Serbian army unit, composed of Serbian archers and cavaliers, decided to take a rest on a grass field while travelling to the battlefield. Since the flowers and other herbs covering the field were highly poisonous, the soldiers became intoxicated, thereby they did not wake up on time for the battle. Realizing that fact, they cursed the grass that poisoned them, branding it black grass. Ensemble Rastko perform dances from Crna Trava. The artistic director for the ensemble is Tanja Ivanovic-Zupkovic. Ensemble Oplenac, Cultural Arts Association Karadjordje Folkloric Ensemble Oplenac present dances from Serbia. Infamous melodies such as Zikino Kolo, Orijent, Rchenica, Dimitrovgradski cacak, Daychovo, just to name a few. Spanning from Belgrade through Sumadija, South and South Eastern Serbia. Choreographed by Aleksandar Popovic. Ensemble Rastko, St Stefan, Rooty Hill Ensemble Rastko s youngest group perform dances from Sumadija. Artistic director of the ensemble is Tanja Zupkovic Ivanovic. Ensemble Sumadija, St Sava, Elanora Heights This choreography features well known dances, including Setnja, Kacerac and Makazice. Choreographed by Gary Dawson. Ensemble Kalenic, St Nikola, Blacktown Ensemble Kalenic perform a splet from Sumadija & dances from Serbia. Choreographed by Mladen Jakovljevic. Ensemble Sumadija, St Sava, Flemington The ensemble perform Hajd povedi veselo / Stara Zajecarka / Sumadinka / Moravsko Kolo / and dances from Toplica. Choreographed by Aleksandar Popovic. Ensemble Omladinska Ravna Gora, Bonnyrigg Dances from the Belgrade are a true depiction of the evolution of traditional clothing. Omladinska Ravna Gora performs dances from Belgrade. Ensemble St Sava, Elanora The senior group perform dances from south-central Serbia in the region of Usce-Studenica. The young adult group perform dances from Crnorechja. Choreographed by Gary Dawson. Ensemble Krushedol, CAA Karadjordje Dances from Gruza, and Levca in the region of Kragujevac. They also perform dances from Trstenik & Bela Planka. 15 Discover Serbian Art Loribelle Spirovski Despite only beginning in 2012, Loribelle s art practice exhibits skill and sensitivity in her medium. In 2014, alongside leading Australian artists, she was selected as a finalist for the Portia Geach Memorial Art Award the most prestigious award granted to the top female artists of the country. A solo exhibition showcasing her current works will be held at the beginning of March to coincide with the International Women s day at Tap Gallery, Darlinghurst. Born to Serbian and Philippine parents, her practice reflects on shifting identities and introspection. In creating portraits she is able to examine both the contemporary fixation on the individual, and the excessive accessibility of images. Loribelle aims to create images which are not always easy to look at. In a society saturated with images, her work incorporates bold colours, ephemeral forms and a slight morbidity, to challenge the viewer s gaze. Through her travels to Belgrade, she has formed a connection with the people and the city itself. The powerful history of the city and the physical and psychological scars still visible left an impression on her. She intends to produce a series of works representing impressions of Belgrade its past, present and future. You can follow her on: Facebook and Tomislav Kobilarov Toma grew up in Vojvodina countryside, where his love for the land inspired him to paint stories related to local people and landscapes. All his paintings are oil based with a brush on technique.toma was educated at the Polytechnic College in Novi Sad, Serbia, and also worked as a machinist. Toma has been drawing and sketching in pencil for as long as he can remember. Contact: digidot@optus.net.com.au Rados Stevanovic Rados was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1976 under the supervision of Prof. Radenko Misevic at the Academy of Fine Art and a Masters in Fine Art He also completed a course at the Royal Kunst Academy of Fine Art, Oslo, Norway under supervision of Prof, Inger Siter. Rados has won numerous art awards, His works were displayed in solo and group exhibitions in Serbia, Italy, Norway and Australia. In Australia, he was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Dobell Drawing Prize Exhibition in 1999 and again in In Blacktown, Sydney, he created the Blacktown City Heritage Mural which is a poetic story of Australia s past, present and future. In 2008, Rados has a solo exhibition in Global Gallery in Paddington, Sydney, where he exhibited drawings, paintings and etchings created in the past 10 years. Preparation time: 30min Cooking time: 60min Ingredients 1 ¼ cups of warm water 1 package active dry yeast 2 teaspoons of salt 1 tablespoon of sugar 2 tablespoons of oil 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour Instructions 1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add salt, sugar and oil and stir until completely mixed. Add flour and mix until a cohesive dough forms. Knead until smooth. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled. 2. Heat oven to 200 degrees. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a flat round. Transfer to a sheet pan that has been lined with parchment paper. Prick loaf all over with a fork. Rub top of bread with oil. Let stand, uncovered, 15 minutes in a warm place. Bake for 30 minutes. 20 Nikola Tesla The Top 4 Inventions of a Serbian Inventor that Changed the World. 1. Alternating Current This is where it all began, and what ultimately caused such a stir at the 1893 World s Expo in Chicago. A war was leveled ever-after between the vision of Edison and the vision of Tesla for how electricity would be produced and distributed. The division can be summarized as one of cost and safety: The DC current that Edison (backed by GE) had been working on was costly over long distances, and produced dangerous sparking from the required converter (called a commutator). Regardless, Edison and his backers utilized the general dangers of electric current to instill fear in Tesla s alternative: Alternating Current. As proof, Edison sometimes electrocuted animals at demonstrations. Consequently, Edison gave the world the electric chair, while simultaneously maligning Tesla s attempt to offer safety at a lower cost. Tesla responded by demonstrating that AC was perfectly safe by famously shooting current through his own body to produce light. This Edison-Tesla feud in 1893 was the culmination of over a decade of shady business deals, stolen ideas, and patent suppression that Nikola Tesla Born 10th July 1856 Edison and his moneyed interests wielded over Tesla s inventions. Yet, despite it all, it is Tesla s system that provides power generation and distribution to North America in our modern era. 2. Light Of course he didn t invent light itself, but he did invent how light can be harnessed and distributed. Tesla developed and used florescent bulbs in his lab some 40 years before industry invented them. At the World s Fair, Tesla took glass tubes and bent them into famous scientists names, in effect creating the first neon signs. However, it is his Tesla Coil that might be the most impressive, and controversial. The Tesla Coil is certainly something that big industry would have liked to suppress: the concept that the Earth itself is a magnet that can generate electricity (electromagnetism) utilizing frequencies as a transmitter. All that is needed on the other end is the receiver, much like a radio. 3. X-rays Electromagnetic and ionizing radiation was heavily researched in the late 1800s, but Tesla researched the entire gamut. Everything from a precursor to Kirlian photography, which has the ability to document life force, to what we now use in medical diagnostics, this was a transformative invention of which Tesla played a central role. X-rays, like so many of Tesla s contributions, stemmed from his belief that everything we need to understand the universe is virtually around us at all times, but we need to use our minds to develop real-world devices to augment our innate perception of existence. 4. Radio Guglielmo Marconi was initially credited, and most believe him to be the inventor of radio to this day. However, the Supreme Court overturned Marconi s patent in 1943, when it was proven that Tesla invented the radio years previous to Marconi. Radio signals are just another frequency that needs a transmitter and receiver, which Tesla also demonstrated in 1893 during a presentation before The National Electric Light Association. In 1897 Tesla applied for two patents US , and US In 1904, however, The U.S. Patent Office reversed its decision, awarding Marconi a patent for the invention of radio, possibly influenced by Marconi s financial backers in the States, who included Thomas Edison and Andrew Carnegie.
