2 The Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports (MedCruise) was founded in June 1996, in Rome, by a collaborative agreement between 16 ports in 7 different countries. The port of the city that hosts the Posidonia Forum, Piraeus, was proudly one of them. 2

3 Αs of today, MedCruise represents over 100 ports and 30 associate members from 21 countries, distributed in four regions: From West to East, these are WEST MED, ADRIATIC, EAST MED, BLACK SEA. The four MedCruise regions with their different cultures and experiences contribute to the success of the Mediterranean Sea and its adjacent seas, promoting the undisputable great locations to cruise, and responding to the challenges that the most dynamic cruise market and its global growth produce.

4 You can t visit the Med you cant t organise an itinerary without visiting a port. All these ports recognize the need to collectively promote their efforts to host modern cruise. They also acknowledge the need to provide common responses that effectively serve the market, and search for solutions to existing problems. When the pluralism and the growing number of associations around the globe produces some unease, MedCruise inclusive membership, and the active participation of a growing number of ports in collective activities, provides to the basis to speak as an authorative association. MedCruise works to be the one-stop hub for all those wanted to engage with Med ports. 4

5 MedCruise PROMOTES its ports DEVELOPS experiences for cruise lines and their customers COLLABORATES on solutions Here I need to proudly say that the long-term demand of the cruise lines for a unified application of berth allocation is reflected and promoted by the MedCruise relevant guidelines and we know that measures as this develop only when ports detail problems in collaboration rather than jockeying independently towards the short-term benefit produced by unilateral actions. 5

6 MedCruise collects accurate statistics in the region. The total of our 70 port members send us reports and this way we collect data. Today is an opportunity to present these data for the first time in Europe, and in advance of their official announcement during our 42 General Assembly to be held in 11 June in Madeira. In 2012 our member ports hosted 25 million passengers and cruise calls 6

7 Over the last decade we experienced an expansionary deployment strategy by the cruise industry in the region, which is remarkable in all respects: 197% growth of deployed bed days. Apparently, the trend continued even when the global financial crisis of 2008 that affected the passengers source markets most of all, or the multiple political and economic crisis became evident in the hosting region. The Med experienced a 49% growth of deployed bed days since Ports in the Med had to adapt speedily, so as to respond to the deployment trends. They did so successfully, responding to the challenge, adapting 7

8 operational practices and updating infrastructures and services required. 7

9 Ten years ago the Med was hosting only 11.5% of the capacity deployed worldwide Today, an increasing trend has lead to the deployment of almost 20% of the global cruise bed days. The challenge for the ports is dual: First, to effectively serve this market as we believe have done up now contributing to the growth of the regionally deployed capacity. Second, to meet the requirements that will allow this trend to sustain. 8

10 The challenge to host an increasing number of passengers has already being met with quality responses the lst two years MedCruise ports experienced record passenger movements. A number of best practices applied by our members are currently under discussion so as to expand in other ports. At the same time Med ports, either through one-to-one events, or via their association are actively involved in discussions with the cruise lines so as to promote the cruise activity in the regions. 9

11 Overall, enhancing the sustainablity of the dynamic trent is important, as the increase of passenger movement per call which increased to per visit in is not necessarily accompanied by an increase of cruise calls. 10
