Every spring for the last three years, the German shipyard Lürssen Yachts has launched three almost identical new yachts measuring some 230 feet, ordered by the same client. The first is Apoise, whose project name was Marlin; she was launched in The second is Saint Nicolas, project name Nemo, launched last year. The third, launched this year, is Martha Ann, whose project name was Shark. She differed from her previous two sister ships thanks to her blue-painted hull. With all of her seventy metres, Saint Nicolas is a grand yacht that flaunts a modern, contemporary exterior.

The immediate visual impact is due to her imposing size and shape, which give her the austere severity of a military vessel; this is one of the German shipyard s specialities.

The Saint Nicolas 230 has six decks, and her roomy guest areas make her perfect for entertaining.

Nobody can fail to be impressed by the sheer elegance of the interiors on Saint Nicolas, which are incredibly spacious and well lit.

Her draught is 3 and a half metres, which is around 11 and a half feet. This large vessel has a displacement of 1626 tons. Lürssen used steel to build her hull, and aluminium for the superstructure. Saint Nicolas has been awarded the classification of the Lloyd s Register of Shipping Maltese Cross 100 A1 SSC Yacht mono, G6, LMC UMS, as well as being compliant with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency LY2. Her hull is fully displacing, and has a zero speed Quantum stabilizer system in a double configuration with two pairs of fins - QC 1800 series forward, and QC 1500 astern.

The yacht s hull is also fitted with a 200kw Brunvoll electric bowthruster. The engine room aboard Saint Nicolas 230 is equipped with two 12-cylinder Caterpillar CAT 3512 B series diesel engines, each of which pumps out 1500 kilowatts at 1600 rpm. The vessel has a propulsion system with twin five-blade Piening propellers, while steering is handled by two semi-balanced Rolls Royce rudder blades. The yacht s top speed is 15 and a half knots, and she can maintain a cruising speed of 12 knots. The yard states her range as being 4 thousand nautical miles at cruising speed. The fuel tanks can hold 200 tons of fuel on board. The freshwater tanks have a capacity of 28 tons, and they are supplied by osmotic water makers from HEM Hydro Electric Marine. Also in the engine room are three utility generator sets, based on Caterpillar CAT 18 diesel generators. Each has 301 kilowatts of power and produces 350 kilovolt-amperes at an engine speed of 1500 rpm. The special technical room on the upper deck contains an emergency generator set, based on a CAT 9 Caterpillar diesel engine with 152 kilowatts of power, producing 190 kilovolt-amperes at an engine speed of 1600 rpm. The tender garage can hold two jet skis and three tenders: an 8-metre Vikal Limousine, an 8-metre Royal Denship Sports, and a six and a half metre Nautica RIB. The boats can be launched by a double-arm crane, through the two large side hatches in the topsides on the stern sections of the hull. A fourth tender, a 4-metre Nautica RIB, is kept in the technical area at the bow, so that it can be launched speedily for emergencies and rescues. The Pilot cabin

Large glass doors lead guests out onto an immense relaxation area on deck, suitably furnished. From here, steps on either side of the transom provide access to a bathing platform.

In the rear of the cabin the Owner can enjoy a raised lounge area, his own panoramic viewpoint where he can relax and socialise, while watching the yacht moving forwards over the sea.

The main deck houses a large formal dining room decorated in classic cream leather, with dark wood panelling and stunning chandeliers. Here they have two areas furnished with sofas and armchairs and coffee tables, along with a bar area. The latter has a long counter and a music corner with piano. Forward, beyond a private office, is the majestic Owner s suite. The master cabin is sumptuous, and includes a vast en-suite bathroom with a large bathtub. In keeping with the feel of the rest of the yacht, the décor of this lounge features dark wood panelling that contrasts with light cream coloured fabrics. The bathroom is decorated with marble, onyx, and gilded accessories to create a relaxing, spacious oasis. Meanwhile, the four generously sized, inviting guest cabins are all situated amidships on the lower deck. They are neatly arranged around a huge foyer. Ideal for formal dinners, this area has the advantage of panoramic sea views, as it looks directly out onto the large open area, sheltered by the aft deck bridge. Out on deck, another impressive dining table allows the Owner and his guests to enjoy an alfresco lunch or dinner, while soaking up the surrounding sea views. The opposite section of this deck houses the captain s cabin, the ship s office and the wheelhouse. The latter has been carefully appointed to make it as spacious as possible, offering the captain and crew a good working environment. It also allows easy access to control and maintenance equipment. The wheelhouse also has two sofas especially for guests, so they can observe navigation operations and enjoy long-range sea views. Moving on to the upper deck, the enormous internal central area has been totally given over to the Owner s children. They will revel in the huge play area, full of light and bright colours, with a treasure trove of toys and electronic game consoles. It even has its own bar! Forward, the play area leads into the splendid lounge of the exclusive panoramic cinema; while astern, it overlooks the impressive area on deck, with an immense, partially covered terrace.
