16 Man-O-War Cay, Abaco, Bahamas S I Z E - The island is about 2 1/2 miles long and about third of a mile wide at its widest point. There is a settlement in the center of the island. The island has three very well protected harbours. L O C A T I O N - Man-O-War Cay is considered the most northeasterly island in the Bahamas at " West Longitude and " North Latitude. It lies about 4 miles off the coast of Great Abaco Island, near the town of Marsh Harbour on the Abaco mainland, the third largest town in the Bahamas. It is a barrier island between Great Abaco and the North Atlantic Ocean. About three quarters of a mile offshore from Man-O-War is a portion of the third longest barrier reef in the world. The island is 180 miles due east of West Palm Beach, Florida and 100 miles north of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Eastern Harbour - Entrance H I S T O R Y - The native residents of Man-O-War are descendants of loyalists who settled in Abaco in 1783 after the American Revolution. They initially used the barrier cays exclusively for farming and established a permanent settlement on Man-O-War around Eventually, all residents of Abaco turned to the sea for their living. Fishing, sponging and boat building became the major occupations. Until about 1975, Man-O-War was considered the boat building capital of the Bahamas. When fiberglass replaced wood as the material of choice for pleasure craft, boat building on Man-O-War waned. However, the shipwrights went on to build houses for the increasing number of foreign residents. Today as a result, most of the carpenters of Man-O-War were, or were trained by, boat builders and are considered to be among the world s finest craftsmen. Although, boat building is no longer the staple of the island economy, fiberglass outboard runabouts are being produced in the community. Their quality, seaworthiness and finish are second to none. Man-O-War Cay Facing Northwest POPULATION - BAHAMIANS - There are currently 320 full-time Bahamian residents. They make up 120 family units and occupy approximately 115 homes in the settlement. FOREIGN HOME OWNERS or Seasonal Residents There are currently 130 foreign property owners on Man-O-War Cay. In a number of cases there are several generations of the same family and some renters appearing on our annual list, however, this number reflects individual families owning property on the island. This is a diverse group, representing 6 foreign countries, two Canadian provinces and 32 of the United States. The countries and the number of residents are: Canada - 6, Germany - 3, England - 2, Switzerland - 1, Sweden - 1, and the United States of the foreign homeowners are full time residents of Man-O-War. Of the 32 American states, the 6 that have produced the most residents are: Florida 29, Massachusetts 14, Connecticut 12, New York 7, Michigan, North Carolina & Pennsylvania - 6 each. Albury's Harbour Store Man-O-War Grocery G O O D S and S E R V I C E S Dock & Dine A wide range of goods are available on Man-O-War. There are: Two grocery stores, a hardware and building materials company, two full service boatyards, a full service marina with dive shop and fuel facilities, a sailmaker, a canvas goods shop, five boutiques and gift shops, two restaurants and a hair dressing salon. Services are: A Post Office, an all age public school, a small public library, a ball field, a volleyball court, a tennis court, a community clinic, two banks with limited days and hours and three active churches of evangelical Christian denomination. Dips,Sips & Wishes The Ferry Service that carries passengers between the cays in the Hub of Abaco was founded in Man-O-War and is now headquartered on Marsh Harbour. The Barge service that carries freight among the cays was also founded and has its headquarters here. Island Treats Take-Away Unlike all other Bahamian communities, there is no alcohol sold on the island, thus there are no bars or liquor stores.

17 Man-O-War Cay, Abaco, Bahamas ECONOMY The people of Man-O-War enjoy the reputation of being industrious and hard working. Boat building virtually disappeared twenty-five years ago as the island's major industry, and today only a limited number of superb fiberglass runabouts are produced annually. Although a number of individuals engage in fishing and crawfishing during the season from August through March, the basis of the economy is the visitor, the yachtsman and the foreign homeowner. Many of the local men are carpenters, spawned by their boat building heritage. Man-O-War Hardware There are many cruising yachts that visit Man-O-War each year, taking advantage of her beautifully protected harbours. Some yachtsmen leave their boats here for extended periods of time and visit periodically to cruise the Bahamas. Some local men take care of these vessels. There are a number of rental homes on the island and many local women manage these and care for the foreign-owned homes in their owner s absence. Library, School, Post Office A wonderful symbiotic relationship has developed between the local residents and the foreign homeowners and visitors. Because of this relationship and the industrious nature of the local people, Man-O-War has become the most affluent community in the Bahamas Out Islands or "Family Islands". It has gained the reputation as the model Out Island community. With no alcohol being sold on the island, the local social dynamic is quite different from many communities.
