3 EIDFJORD CRUISE PORT - HARDANGERFJORD Eidfjord is located in the innermost part of the famous Hardangerfjord. The cruise port is located in the centre of Eidfjord and offers the very best and safest conditions. Eidfjord has a population of around 930. We are a thriving community and enjoy the fjord and mountains throughout the year. Hardangerfjord is the second longest fjord in Norway, 179 km also called the Queen of the Fjords. Vøringsfossen waterfall has been Norway s most visited natural attraction for a long time. During the next five years there will be construction on the viewpoints to make this attraction one of three national tourist icons in Norway! The work has already started, but it will never disturb the normal tourist traffic, the project will be done in The Hardangervidda plateau and the Hardangerfjord are well-known far beyond Norway s borders. Due to the mild climate the region is also the orchard of Fjord Norway here we grow apples, plums, pears and cherries. The blossom season in May/June is unique the mountain sides are covered in white, pink and red flowers, from the white snow at the top down to the blue fjord. July October is the harvesting season for fruit, sweet cherry and cider festivals in the small villages along the fjord. Eidfjord offers a unique natural environment. With large contrasts and small distances you can experience the most and best of what Norway has to offer. Our visitors can find peace and quiet in the natural environment, in addition to visiting many of our attractions. Eidfjord is the gateway to the Hardangervidda, the largest high mountain plateau in Europe and Norway s largest national park. Welcome to annualy events and festivals in Eidfjord: Expedition Amundsen (Feb/March), National Day (May 17th), Hardanger Music Festival (Mai/June), Midsummer Night (June 23rd), Minitriathlon (August), Norseman Xtreme Triathlon (August), Hardangervidda Marathon (September), Local Food Festival (Sept/Oct). The HARDANGER BRIDGE, which opened in August 2013, has made Eidfjord easier to access. It is a 2 lane suspension bridge with sidewalks for pedestrians and bikers. The main span is 1310 meters and the total length is 1380 m. The airdraft is 55 meters. The bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Norway. 3

11 WASTE HANDLING AT EIDFJORD CRUISE PORT - SEASON 2018 (rates for 2019 may change due to changes in IHM s rates) Eidfjord Cruise Port is co-operating with Indre Hordaland Miljøverk (IHM), Voss, in handling waste disposal. IHM is an inter-communal company with a waste disposal and treatment facility in Voss, around 50 kilometres from Eidfjord. Eidfjord Cruise Port offers cruiseships waste disposal services during 2018 at the following terms and prices: RECEIPT AND PROCESSING Waste Food waste Glass and metal packaging Plastic (delivered in sacks) Cardboard, bundles Paper and cardboard, mixed Electrical waste products Hazardous waste (oil, spirits, paint) Sorting TRANSPORTATION Based on meeting each docking vessel with mobile waste treatment facility. 3 1 unit 22-41m container of waste. 3 1 unit 22m container including containers of different sorted materials. For example: 4 x 660 litres food waste. 4 x 660 litres glass and metal packaging. 1 x Euro pallet with frame for hazardous waste. Cardboard in rolls and plastic can be put in at the end. It is important that the waste is well sorted. If additional sorting is required, an additional fee will be charged according to the extra time taken to sort the material. 17 VØRINGSFOSSEN WATERFALL The Vøringsfossen waterfall is Norways best known and most visited natural attraction. The majestic falls cascade more than 182 meters into the Måbø Valley below. The development project around Vøringsfossen is well under way, the spectacular new viewpoints should be completed in The view is breathtaking from the top at Fossli Hotel / Parkinglot. Norsk Natursenter is an exciting activity and experience center with focus on Norwegian nature, climate and environment. We offer three floors of exciting exhibitions, dioramas, interactive stations, innovative aquariums, educational videos and illustrative texts. It was built in collaboration with Norwegian filmmaker Ivo Caprino, and when we show our 225-degree panoramic film about Hardangervidda, The Hardanger Fjord and the beautiful waterfalls in the region, you feel as if you are part of the journey on screen. We promise you a great experience between high mountains and deep fjords. Experience thrilling helicopter dives above steep canyons and cascading waterfalls. Take in the quiet, poetic scenes between mountain lakes, glaciers and reindeer, accompanied by an original music score. The soundtrack is intense, melancholy and lyrical, like the film itself. HARDANGERVIDDA HALL RESTAURANT AND KAFÉ In a building made of wood and stone, our restaurant recreates the atmosphere of the rugged mountain farms and hunting cabins on Hardangervidda. 19 HIKE TO HÆREID Walk from the centre of Eidfjord along the river Eio up to the nice sandy beach at lake Eidfjordvatnet. On top of Hereid you will find the largest gravesite from the Iron age and the Viking age in Western Norway, with almost 400 graves from AD. The train takes you for a 1 hour sightseeingtour in the centre of Eidfjord. You will enjoy a nice view of the fjord, mountains and the daily life in Eidfjord. Drive by the largest prehistoric burial ground in Western Norway, located at Hæreid, see some of the graves from the Ironand Viking ages. Photo stop by a view point. Photo stop by the old St. Jacobs Church from 1309 close to Trebua woodshop and return to the center. If you wish you can exit the train for a visit at Trebua with traditional, local wood carvings and fiddle collection. Then there s a 10 minute walk back to the port. Life on Kjeåsen is described in Bror Ekström s book The people of Kjeåsen and in television documentaries and miscellaneous articles. Due to narrow road, hourly driving has been introduced. Traffic up to Kjeåsen every full hour, traffic down from Kjeåsen on the half hour. One can drive up just to enjoy the view, or groups can book a visit at Bjørg Wiik s court yard, she will welcome you and play a CD that tells the story of Kjeåsen. 1,25-2 hours (incl min. stay) 15 min. The taxi takes you 7 km to Simadal and 5 km up the steep road built in the 1970 s during the construction of the power plant. Half of the road goes through a tunnel with limited lighting. 21 N. BERGSLIEN ART GALLERY The Quality Hotel Vøringfoss hosts a large permanent exhibition of the well-known local artist Nils Bergslien ( ). The gallery also stages various visiting exhibitions. The Eidfjord Community is in charge of the gallery tours. 22 EIDFJORD OLD CHURCH A ST. JACOBS CHURCH Nestling in the heart of the Hardangerfjord countryside, and dwarfed by the surrounding mountains stand the old Eidfjord church, a stonebuilt church from about 1309 A.D. According to the saga, the influential and mighty Rich- Ragna, who ruled at the time, has been credited with the building of this church. Her reason for building the church lay in her desperate need for forgivness for all her wicked deeds. Amongst her many spiteful deeds she allowed her own husband to drown while they were on their way to town. She left him on a reef and when the tide came in, he drowned. Some of the stonewalls in the church measure as much as 5 ft in thickness. The pulpit is probably from about A.D Both the front and the pulpit are decorated in panels with a variety of motives. This is the only Jacobs church in Norway which still perfoms services. The group follows the guide who tells about Eidfjord Cruise Port and then continues towards the small beach where the kayaks are prepared. On the small beach the group will be instructed in paddle techniques, safety procedures and correct use of the equipment. During the kayaking on the fjord the instructor will tell about the creation of the fjord landscape. Instruction and use of equipment is included in the price. 29 FLATEARTH ADVENTURES - SNOWSHOE TOUR ON HARDANGERVIDDA A guide from FlatEarth Adventures meets the group in front of the gate to the Cruise ship. The group follows the guide to the minivan and will be taken directly to the high mountain plateau. Here the participants will get instructions in snow shoe walking and how to pull the traditional Norwegian PULK. The tour has some of the same elements of a polar expedition only in a safer and much less demanding environment. The PULK is NOT heavy to pull, and is optional to try, should a guest not feel like it. During the tour the guide will demonstrate the use of mountain rescue devices such as avalanche search equipment. The guests will be offered the opportunity to try this rescue technique themselves. Warm drinks will be served during this special activity. We will be sitting on warm reindeer skins in the snow camp. No matter the weather the participants will have a once in a lifetime experience! 31 HARDANGER FJORDSAFARI NEW Different themed tours can be offered by RIB-boat, some examples are: 1.A stop outside Sima powerplant, a stop at Hotle to entertain some farm animals and a stop mid-fjord overseeing Skår mountain farm, Hardangerjøkulen glacier and Eidfjord community. Hopefully we will fill these three stops with interesting information and stories (30 min). 2. Stop under the Skårselve waterfall, a stop at Kobbure where we can expect to see seals on 3 out of 5 visits. In late August and September we should expect to photo: Voss Tandem see and hear wild deer on this tour. This tour will have the same stop mid-fjord overseeing Skår mountain farm, Hardangerjøkulen glacier and Eidfjord community (30 min). 3. A combination of tour 1 and 2, or a tour to the Hardangerbrua bridge. We will explain how it was built, some impressive data and historic facts leading up to the start of the construction.
