4 Land of the Smoking Volcano THURSDAY, AUGUST 11 Depart Home City/ Anchorage, Alaska Depart your home city for Anchorage. Upon arrival, transfer to the Anchorage Hilton Hotel for an overnight stay. FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 Anchorage/Cross the International Date Line After breakfast, board a charter flight to the Russian Far East. As you pass high above the Aleutian archipelago, you ll lose a calendar day crossing the international date line. SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia (Embark) Arrive in Petropavlovsk this evening. Embark the Clipper Odyssey and sail along the scenic Kamchatka Peninsula, where the long hours of daylight linger as you approach the Kuril Islands. SUNDAY, AUGUST 14 Ptichi and Paramushir Islands, Kuril Islands, Russia In the waters between Shumshu and Paramushir islands, use Zodiac landing craft to cruise close to the tiny Ptichi (bird) Islands, three rocky isles that are a haven for sea otters, harbor seals, and hundreds to thousands of tufted puffins, pelagic cormorants, spectacled guillemots, and other birds. This is also a rich feeding ground for marine mammals, including whales. This afternoon, cruise to Paramushir Island and anchor in Krasheninnikova Bay under the steep slopes of milehigh Fussa Volcano. Join our naturalists on shore walks, and look skyward for the ruby-throat The pristine beauty of the Kamchatka Peninsula is inspiring. and rough-legged hawks that soar overhead. MONDAY, AUGUST 15 Ushishir and Simushir Islands, Kuril Islands A special, and exciting, expedition opportunity awaits you today two stops on remote islands where you enter the calderas of active volcanoes by Zodiac. This morning, anchor off the mouth of the volcano at Ushishir Island and enter the caldera from the seaward side, landing on the beach for a walk amongst the fumaroles. At Simushir this afternoon, you ll go ashore again via Zodiac to explore the former Soviet Navy submarine depot, abandoned in the 1990s when the Cold War came to an end. TUESDAY, AUGUST 16 Broutona and Chirpoy Islands, Kuril Islands As the rising sun paints the peak of volcanic Broutona Island pink, you ll anchor and launch Zodiacs for a cruise among the rocks, teeming with birds. Then sail from Broutona in the soft morning light toward Chirpoy to examine its striking black lava cliffs and dark-hued terrain. Watch columns of white smoke billow from Chirpoy s aptly named peak of Vulcan, and sea lions sunning on a tiny islet just offshore. Keep watch for the many seabirds that shelter on the rocky cliffs, including sea eagles. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17 Urup Island, Kuril Islands The rich colonial history of the Kuril Islands becomes evident today during a visit to the ruins of Aleutka Kurilisk, a trading post on Urup Island founded by the Russian American Company

5 es & Japan in An archaeological site containing relics from the indigenous Ainu people provides a glimpse into the island s more ancient history. During your exploration, notice the wildflowers that paint the landscape, and the large populations of birds and other wildlife that thrive here. THURSDAY, AUGUST 18 Kunashir Island, Kuril Islands Cruise by the final major island in the Kuril archipelago today. Still claimed by Japan, Kunashir s disputed ownership is a legacy of the World War II conflict between Japan and Russia. The island s Tyatya Volcano is revered as Father Mountain by the natives and is considered the most beautiful and classic of all Kuril Islands volcanoes. FRIDAY, AUGUST 19 Hadodate, Japan Hakodate boasts some fine examples of turn-of-thecentury colonial architecture as well as Japan s first Western-style fort, Goryo-kaku, constructed in the shape of a five-pointed star. Tour the fort today before returning to the Clipper Odyssey and setting sail for Matsushima Bay. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 Shiogama (for Matsushima Bay), Japan Anchor in the port of Shiogama this morning and travel by ferry to the pine-covered islands surrounding Matsushima Bay a serenely picturesque seascape considered one of the great sights of Japan. On Matsushima Island, visit Godaido Temple and the well-preserved, 17th-century Zen temple of Zuigan-ji before concluding your tour with a visit to the tea garden pavilion of Kanran-tei. SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 Morning at Sea/Shikinejima, Japan Enjoy a relaxing morning at sea and arrive at the beautiful island of Shikine-jima this afternoon. A lush and lovely island about a mile in diameter it lies just south of Tokyo Bay and is almost unknown to the outside world. You ll anchor offshore and use Zodiacs to explore the island s lush vegetation, white sandy beaches tucked into hidden coves, and hot springs that border the water s edge. Visit magnificent Himeji Castle. Flying fish and turtles thrive in the warm offshore currents, and the rocky coastline is perfect for Zodiac exploration. MONDAY, AUGUST 22 Toba, Japan A short ferry ride takes you to Mikimoto Pearl Island this morning for a visit to the Museum of Pearls, where ama women dive in their traditional white suits. From Mikimoto, tour the Shima Hanto Peninsula, stopping first at Meoto-iwa two rocks off the coastline that are joined in matrimony by sacred ropes and continuing on to one of Japan s most venerated Shinto shrines, Ise-Jingu. In keeping with Shinto custom, the shrine s nearly 200 buildings are replaced every 20 years using no metal, only wooden dowels and interlocking joints. The present buildings were reconstructed for the 61st time in TUESDAY, AUGUST 23 Uno Ko (for Okayama)/ Cruising the Inland Sea, Japan Uno Ko is your starting point for a tour of Okayama. Located on southeastern Honsu Japan s largest island Okayama boasts one of Japan s most famous gardens, Koraku-en. Constructed in the late 1600s, it features beautifully landscaped lawns, lovely ponds, rice paddies, a small tea plantation, and a Ryuten building where poetry contests were once held. Visit the garden today on a tour that includes Okayama-jo (Crow Castle) and the Hayashibara Museum of Art.
