4 BOCA GRANDE Terry Smith Boca Grande is a small residential community on Gasparilla Island just a short 15 minutes south of Englewood, home to the World s Richest Tarpon Tournament. Boca Grande means BIG MOUTH in Spanish and came from the waterway at the southern tip of Cell: the island called Boca Grande Pass which is found along the Gulf of Mexico at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor. Boca Grande is a quiet island town, rich in history and is a permanent home for some but is traditionally an island getaway unspoiled by heavy commercialization. 5 PALM ISLAND Kim Brereton Palm Island is part of Charlotte County s barrier islands which stretch from Manasota Key to Boca Grande. Palm Island is the hidden gem in the center of these barrier Islands with 7 miles of unspoiled pristine beach x116 The Island is made up of 4 interconnecting islands Thornton Key, Knight Island, Don Pedro Cell: Island and Little Gasparilla Island with Stump Pass at the north end, and Gasparilla Pass with it s world class fishing on the south end. 7 ENGLEWOOD John & Diana Headley Englewood is an unincorporated community that is both in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties, and consists of 10 sq. mi. and a population of approx. 18,500. Englewood is an artist, photographer and birdwatcher paradise x112 You may see manatee, dolphin, gopher Cell: tortoises, egret, heron, roseate spoonbills, pelicans or other wildlife. Freshwater canals snake through much of East Englewood. Within a couple miles you ll find four beautiful Gulf Beaches and two State Parks where fishing is a popular sport. The old part of town is centered along West Dearborn Street where there are many nice shops and little restaurants with outside dining. The Art Center has a gallery and also has the Suncoast Writers Guild. The Lemon Bay Playhouse on Dearborn St. provides live theater productions. Englewood was voted #2 on the list of top emerging US destinations according to TripAdvsor.com and on the top 10 destinations by Travelocity. Nestled along the shores of Lemon Bay, an estuary of the Gulf of Mexico it was virtually undiscovered until the late 1960 s. MANASOTA KEY Chris Lee Manasota Key is a unique barrier island located off the Southwestern coast of Florida between Sarasota and Ft. Myers and offers the true old Florida feel that we all beckon back to. No high rises, traffic lights or traffic x120 jams, simply the beach and relaxation. Cell: The island is separated from the mainland by the intercoastal waterway which affords homeowners the option of owning beachfront or bayfront homes or condos. Fishing and golfing are always an option. This area of Florida has been largely undiscovered by the masses due to the lack of a major highway nearby. The Tampa Int l Airport is only 80 minutes away and the Ft. Myers Int l Airport is 90 minutes away. North Port has approximately 12 parks and recreational areas. 9 North of I-75 is North Port Estates where you will find 3-5 acre sites zoned agricultural. Homes north of 41 offer lakes and canals without access to the Gulf, and canals on the south side of 41 have Gulf Access. Gated golf course communities are also plentiful. With an average age of 39, North Port is a relatively Young city. Two of the three hospitals are located in Port Charlotte. The Murdock area of northern Port Charlotte is a dynamic growing shopping-business center. Recreational opportunities abound golf courses, yacht clubs, tennis clubs, parks, boating facilities, pool and beach swimming and more. There are more than 165 miles of man-made water ways, many with access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico as well as miles of natural shoreline bordering Charlotte Harbor and the Peace and Myakka Rivers. Median house price is 144,300. PUNTA GORDA Punta Gorda is a boater s paradise. This historic small town is a hidden treasure of Florida and lies as a Fat Point, sticking out into Charlotte Harbor one of the US s largest natural harbors and 2nd largest in the Gulf, offering 125 miles of pristine boating water. As the only incorporated City of Charlotte County, Punta Gorda is the vibrant engine of this beautiful location. Downtown Historic Punta Gorda with its old-florida architecture draws visitors to its quaint, cobbled streets where Farmer s markets are held every weekend morning and every 3rd Thursday of the month and the Downtown Merchants present a Gallery Walk. About 2 miles east of the City is Punta Gorda Airport with direct flights to many northern cities. Although Punta Gorda offers a diverse commercial arena, distribution services, construction, design, retail hospitality, tourism, health services, life sciences and real estate are the largest industry sectors. 21 - FISHING REPORT - Welcome to a Sea of Dreams... By CAPTAIN ROB HILL We are here, for whatever reason we have arrived, in the land of sun and fun. While there are a myriad of possibilities that could have brought us here; weather, golf, family, witness protection program... whatever, I believe that there is one common thread, a dream if you will, that brings people to live in the sunshine state. Call it what you will... a whopper, a lunker, a good ole big un, catching a trophy fish is what we dream of in this land of plenty... and whether we actually pursue the dream or not, there is a lot to dream about. Florida has every type of fishing you could ever want. Blue marlin and tuna lurk the edges of the continental shelf, and that far offshore you could even spot a whale or other creature of the deep. Closer to shore we have the great duo of grouper and snapper. These two top everyone s list of fried, broiled, or blackened menu. One bite of a grouper sandwich and you will begin looking for a buddy with a sea worthy boat. Your eyes will glaze over as you imagine yourself filling coolers with your own personal freezer full of future grouper sandwiches. As we come to the shore we have a mix of great gamefish and more great food fish. Tarpon are in a class by themselves as far as exciting gamefish. They readily eat both bait and lure and do not require a large boat to catch them. In fact, people catch them from kayaks along the beach from time to time. Keep in mind that these fish far outweigh the kayak, well over a hundred pounds is common place. Imagine sending a picture of you with a trophy tarpon to the guys back at the mill. Then for emphasis, send them another picture of a bigger one the next day. That s right, saltwater in their wounds. Inshore fishing is a staple of fishermen in our area. You can fish for trout, redfish, and flounder on the windiest day of the year. Again, no large specialized boat or tackle is required... the only thing you really need is motivation.
