The 1st Annual Workshop of Strategic Alliances for the Internationalization of Higher Education will take place on the campus of the University of Cienfuegos and at historical locations around the city. The Workshop is part of a larger structured people-to-people trip designed for educators, administrators and students who are looking to learn more about the opportunities for networking or creating long lasting ties in Cuba. This People-To-People Trip for Study Abroad is the must attend event to see the campus firsthand, find answers, build relationships and gain access to a Cuba as never before. We will round off our trip to Cuba with a visit to Havana. 6 Our Host: The University of Cienfuegos Originally known as the Instituto Superior Tecnico de Cienfuegos (ITSC), the University of Cienfuegos (UC), was founded in 1979 with a focus on engineering, economics and education. In the 1990 s, ITSC underwent a process of integration when the Colleges of Cultural Studies (later Humanities) and Educational Pedagogy were introduced. At the turn of the 21st century, UC introduced the Faculties of Informatics, Agricultural Sciences and Graduate Arts and Sciences and strengthened the Pedagogical Sciences and Engineering. Today, the University of Cienfuegos is the fastest growing university in the country. UC is split into seven schools (faculties): The School of Engineering (SI) The School of Humanities (SSSH) The School of Education Sciences (SES) The School of Economic Sciences (SES) The School of Agrarian Sciences (SAS) The School of Physical Education and Athletics (SPC) The School of Social Sciences (SSC) The University of Cienfuegos ( system consists of nine institutions with a campus in each of the province s nine municipalities. The main campus, University of Cienfuegos Carlos Rafael Rodríguez, sits on a 36 ½ acre campus on the eastern portion of the Historic Center of the city. It employs 432 full-time professors related to the international development of the university community and has a total student body of over 6,500 in 11 fields of study. 7 FUN FACT The architectural tradition of iron bars began in the 16th century as a defense from pirates. Look for them as you walk the streets. UC has several research centers/groups for undergraduate and postgraduate study. The most known centers are: the Center for the Studies of Energy and Environmental Issues (CSEEI), Center for Socio Cultural Studies (CSCS), Center for the Studies of Direction and Didactics of Higher Education (CSDDHE), Center for the Studies of Sustainable Agrarian Transformation (CSSAT), Center for Cleaner Productions (CCP), Group for Local Socio-Economic Development (CLSED) and, Group for the Development of Educative Technologies (GDET). 12 FUN FACT The Cuban daiquiri popularized by Ernest Hemingway is sweetened by sugar cane and has about 2/3 less sugar than its U.S. counterpart. Pre-Trip Documentation A passport (valid for at least six months after the scheduled return date) is required. A Visa is also required which Civitas GES will obtain for you and provide to you due to the special requirements to visit Cuba. An affidavit confirming you are traveling under a people-to-people license and that you will participate in the full-time schedule of educational exchange activities Travel Registration Form A color copy of your valid passport. Additionally you will receive a Letter of Authorization from Civitas GES stating that you have permission to travel under our license. This Letter of Authorization will be attached to the travel affidavit and given to you prior to departure. 16 Call for Papers The University of Cienfuegos is asking that you be a part of an historical first panel of presenters. If you would like to be a presenter at the Workshop, please send your abstracts to the Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee via (dri@ucf.edu.cu) by July 20, The best selected papers will be published in a special edition of the University magazine, University and Society (Universidad y Sociedad). It is ranked as the number two best ranked magazine in all of Latin America for Higher Education. The abstract should not exceed 500 words in length and have no more than four or five descriptive key terms. Please also include your full name, institution, address, country, telephone number, fax and address. The deadline for final papers is September 4, Papers should contain the following information: Title Authors Institution Country The papers should be written in Arial 12, single space, 8½ x 11 paper (21,59 cm x 27,94 cm), maximum length of 10 pages, indentation 2.5 on each side, and using Word 6.0 or later. The text should provide information about the objectives, the methods used, the results, conclusions, and bibliography used. 17 The City of Cienfuegos Protected from the Caribbean Sea by a bay with the same name, the city of Cienfuegos is approximately 160 miles (240 km) southwest of Havana along Cuba s southern shore. The city has a population of just over 186,000 1 residents making it the 10th largest city in the country. Known as La Perla Del Sur (or the Pearl of the South), The City of Cienfuegos was originally settled by French and Louisiana colonists in The city s French Neoclassical style earned the historic center its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 2005 for implementation in urban planning 2. The designation has brought with it millions in funding which have been used to restore and maintain much of the city s historic center. Cienfuegos is a city rich in history and culture with music abound. The city is home to many of the country s most prominent international stars of the last 100 years from literature (Anita Fernandez) to sports (Yasiel Puig, Rodolfo Abreus). The city is also the hometown of Benny Moré who is considered to be the greatest artist in the history of Cuban Music 3. Each year the city holds an annual music festival in tribute to him featuring many of the country s top musicians and artists. If Cuba has a Paris, this is most definitely it.
