9 2017 Mattatuck District Klondike Derby Fire Building, the perfect cup of hot chocolate There is no story with this town; it is a town of the finest Scouting skill. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to light a fire and make a cup of hot chocolate for your poor, cold Patrol Leader. Lighters and miniblowtorches are prohibited (this is a task of skill.... ), matches are allowed, but for the potential of maximum score use flint and steel only. Fires starters may be used as long as they are approved by your judge first (no paper). You will be judged on your patrols ability to build a fire using only natural materials and boil water for a cup of hot chocolate (the temperature of the drink will be measured, higher temp = higher score). Remember the initial construction is going to be everything. Consider how the fire will bum and what you are using it for. Also, it seems your Patrol Leader is too cold to do anything but talk to the Patrol; he can't touch anything associated with the task. We will supply the hot chocolate and the cup. Scoring: This event is not timed in any way, shape or form. You could spend all day here if you want. However, we don't recommend it. POINTS 1-30 I For Scout Sprit Simple really, it's the Scout Oath and Law... Patrol Yells, Patrol Flags, helping one another, helping other patrols etc. No cutting anything green/alive including ripping off birch bark off a standing tree Teamwork Patrol works together as a team Allowing for poor cold Patrol Leader to touch things would be bad If the patrol doesn't help and allows only one person to build it would also be bad The Challenge Fire lights and stays lit, no more re-lights once the pot is placed on/in it. If the temperature of the drink is above 170 deg F = more point. If the temperature of the drink is above 200 deg F = even better. U sing a town supplied match. Improperly mixed hot chocolate (No Lumps). Cup is less the % quarter full. Better score with flint and steel. Common questions: Can we use a fire starter? Yes, if your judge approves it first Can we use paper? No Does it have to be "One Match" like other years? No Can we touch the fire once it starts? Yes Can we add wood to the fire once it starts? Yes 9
