2 At Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center, we re eagerly looking forward to our 48th year of summer programming. Please take a moment to browse through this booklet to learn more about our wide variety of summer programs. We take pride in providing a safe environment for learning, making new friends, and building confidence. Each camp is staffed with a combination of certified teachers and enthusiastic junior counselors; it s their job to make sure each camper has a positive, unforgettable experience. We believe every child should have the opportunity to enjoy summer camp, and we offer financial assistance for those in need. Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center sits on 24 wooded acres at the headwaters of the Severn River in Millersville, a perfect location for teaching environmental stewardship in the outdoors. It s owned and operated year-round by Anne Arundel County Public Schools and is home to the Office of Environmental Literacy and Outdoor Education. 4 2 Art Camps Art Trek Artistic Nature For students entering grades: 3 6 Dates: July 30 August 2 Time: 9:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. The goal of the Art Trek program is to challenge and encourage students with aspiring interests and emerging skills in art. Taught by county art teachers, the Art Trek experience offers drawing, painting, sculpture, as well as other activities. Students will have the opportunity to become acquainted with new friends with similar artistic interests. Swimming and canoeing will be offered for each student. These activities are supervised by certified aquatic instructors at all times. Natural Connections Creating Art in Nature For students entering grades: 7 9 Dates: July 30 August 2 Time: 9:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. The goal of Anne Arundel County Public Schools Enrichment program is to provide students with an intensive studio experience with activities focusing on the environment around them and the opportunity to make independent artistic discoveries. Develop your artistic voice as you work on independent artworks as well as collaborating with others. This years activities include projects in sculpture, drawing, and a mixed media collaborative. Swimming, canoeing, and back by popular demand the Water Carnival will be offered again this year. These activities are supervised by certified aquatic instructors at all times. Each Day brings a fresh perspective and exciting twists are in store ART-rageous! Transportation Students needing bus transportation will be sent bus stop and schedule information at a later date. Cost for each camp $ Financial Assistance Scholarships may be available to students. Meals Students will be provided with lunch and a snack each day. Application Procedures (page 7) 1. 5 3 Outdoor Education Who can participate? All Outdoor Education camps are open to any student who has an interest in the environment, making new friends, adventure, and personal growth. Staff Our staff consists of AACPS teachers as well as college students with experience in the areas of outdoor and environmental education. Volunteer counselors-in-training support the staff in many ways. Application Procedures Register and pay online at by clicking Camps, choose your camp from the list provided, and follow the link for registration, or 1. Submit the Outdoor Education Camp Application by May A deposit must be included. 3. The balance is due upon the acceptance of camp. Payment/Refund Policy: Full payment is due 30 days prior to start of camp. If full payment is not received by this time, your child s reservation will not be held. After this date, we cannot guarantee that space will be available when your payment is received. If a cancellation is made before the 30 day time period, a 100% refund will be issued (less a $10 processing fee). If a cancellation is made any time between days prior to the start of camp, a 50% refund will be issued (less a $10 processing fee). No refunds will be issued 14 days or less prior to the start of camp. Additionally, there shall be no partial refund granted for any camper s late arrival, early withdrawal, non-arrival or dismissal for cause. All cancellations must be received in writing. Questions? Contact Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center at Early Birds Camp Students entering grades: K 2 EBC I: July :00am 3:00pm EBC II: July :00am 3:00pm If you are looking for a safe, nurturing camp that teaches young children to be good stewards of the natural environment, this camp is for you! Early Birds Camp will allow the young and often first-time camper many opportunities to explore, investigate, and experience a variety of nature-based activities. Daily activities will include science, music, art, movement, and swimming centered around the outdoor environment. A well trained staff will guide each young camper in these enriching experiences. The camp will run from Monday to Thursday, from 9am 3pm. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent. Lunch and snack will be provided each day. Cost $250 includes lunch and snack each day, all materials of instruction, and swimming. A $150 deposit must be included with the application. This child-centered camp is designed for the active learning of young children. Campers will enjoy a number of exciting nature based activities as well as a learn-to-swim program, arts and crafts, skits, boating safety and crabbing and fishing. This camp will provide each child with the opportunity to interact with other children under the guidance of a caring and trained staff. Cost $400 includes meals, accommodations, activities, and instructional materials. A $200 deposit must be included with the application. The $200 remaining balance is due upon the acceptance of camp. 6 4 Outdoor Education, continued Planet Earth Camp For students entering grades: 4 6 August 6 9 Planet Earth Camp is a four day, three night residential camp for students that love the outdoors. Through a variety of hands-on activities, campers will investigate the natural environment and will participate in an environmental action project. Every day we challenge our campers to practice sustainable living by conserving water and electricity, reducing food waste, and even cooking a sustainable, locallysourced meal. And of course our campers will enjoy a variety of classic summer camp activities such as swimming, field games, archery, fishing, crabbing, and canoeing! Cost $400 includes meals, accommodations, activities, and instructional materials. A $200 deposit must be included with the application. The $200 remaining balance is due upon the acceptance of camp. While participating in exciting outdoor challenges, campers will explore natural ecosystems, develop outdoor skills, and gain self-confidence and independence. In addition to fishing, crabbing, archery and camp crafts, campers will participate in a three night offsite tent camping trip which features hiking, meal preparation, camp games, and much more! Our trained lifeguards will direct water safety instruction and canoeing skills as well as lead a river tubing adventure! Cost $700 includes meals, accommodations, activities, instructional materials and transportation to and from campsites. A $350 deposit must be included with the application. Contact: Lauren Jenkins Arlington Echo Outdoor Educator lajenkins@aacps.org High Adventure Camp Student entering grades 9 11 HAC I: July 8 14 HAC II: July High Adventure Camp is a seven day, six night residential camp for adventurous campers seeking to explore the natural world in a wilderness setting. Campers will spend two days and one night at Arlington Echo, preparing for their upcoming adventure and learning the basics of backcountry skills and safety. Monday morning, we ll board the bus and drive out to the trailhead, and then our real adventure begins! Our campers will spend the next five days hiking through beautiful wilderness, taking time to enjoy breathtaking mountain vistas, observe wildlife, search streams for crayfish and tadpoles, and develop backcountry skills. Space is extremely limited so sign up today! Who can Participate? All Outdoor Education camps are open to any student who has an interest in the environment, adventure, and personal growth. Hiking to a remote campsite is an incredibly rewarding experience, but not without its challenges. Please note that by its nature, backpacking is a physically strenuous activity. Campers will be required to carry between lbs. of gear and hike rugged terrain sometimes steep for up to six miles daily. If you have any questions or concerns about whether High Adventure Camp is right for your camper, please don t hesitate to call the number below. 7 5 Learn to Swim Students ages: 3 11 years July 2, 3, 5, 6/July 9, 10, 11, 12 The Learn to Swim Program is an expansion of the Outdoor Education Program s commitment to water safety education. Seven different courses covering a variety of skill levels will be offered. The program objectives are to have students oriented to the aquatic environment, gain and build on basic skills, learn and refine different strokes, and acquire personal safety and rescue skills. The Learn to Swim program runs for two weeks, with eight total sessions. Staff Instructors are the professional summer aquatic education staff at Arlington Echo. They are certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, and aquatic teaching experience. Skill Screening To ensure proper placement of your child in the appropriate class, a screening for each session will be offered. This will be an opportunity to meet the instructors and for the student to demonstrate his or her current swimming ability. It does not teach young children to be accomplished swimmers. It does provide the parent with necessary knowledge/skills to orient their child to the water. The emphasis is on having fun. Parent participation in the water is required. Pre-School Level II (ages 3 and 4) Designed for the preschool age child who is completely adjusted to and comfortable in the water. The child willingly swims under the water and has some swimming abilities. Introduction to Water Skills (Level I) Designed for the true beginner who is afraid of the water. Basic skills (water adjustment, floats, breath control, personal safety) will be taught as students progress through the program. Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Level II) Designed for the beginner who is comfortable in the water and has some basic shallow water skills. Students will learn to float without support, recover to a vertical position and begin to move through the water without support. Level II will also introduce the student to swimming on their side simultaneously kicking and treading water. Stroke Development (Level III) Students will learn the front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, treading water, the dolphin kick and proper body position for the butterfly, and diving from the side of the pool. Prerequisite: Must have some deep water swimming experience. Student must also be able to independently execute the prone float, back float, crawl stroke, combined back stroke, and swimming on their side. Stroke Improvement (Level IV) Designed to increase endurance by swimming the elementary backstroke, front crawl and back crawl. The breaststroke, sidestroke, basics of turns, and the butterfly will be taught. Prerequisite: Must be able to execute the front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl stroke and elementary backstroke, and butterfly body position and dolphin kick. Stroke Refinement (Level V) Designed to increase endurance and master the crawlstroke, back crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly. Prerequisite: Students must be able to demonstrate the skills taught in Level IV. For more information call Arlington Echo at

8 6 World & Classical Languages El Campo del Bosque For students entering grades: 1 5 Dates: June Time: 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. From the moment your passport is stamped entrada (entrance) by the officials at inmigración (immigration), you will find yourself immersed in an exciting world where you will experience Hispanic culture and speak the Spanish Language. The goal of El Campo del Bosque is to help learners make basic exchanges in Spanish and develop an appreciation for the diverse Hispanic cultures. Children with any ranges of Spanish proficiency are encouraged to attend and immerse themselves into the non-intimidating yet challenging Spanish only environment Native and non-native speaking AACPS teachers instruct small grouped with the help of counselors who are current high school Spanish students. During the 5 days, campers will experience the structure and sound of the language through the use of engaging songs, crafts, outdoor games, as well as exciting cultural and environmental activities. Children are grouped primarily by their grade levels. Campers also participate in swimming, canoeing, seining, crabbing, which are supervised by certified, Englishspeaking instructors at all times. This year will include a field trip on Tuesday, and archery will be offered for campers entering 4th or 5th grade in the fall! Transportation At this time, no transportation will be provided for this camp. Parents are expected to drop off their children promptly at 8:15 and pick up their children promptly at 3:30. Cost $ ($ deposit, $ to be paid upon acceptance.) Financial Assistance Scholarships may be available to students. Please note that only partial scholarships will be awarded. Meals Students will be provided with a culturally authentic lunch and snack each day. Application Procedures (page 13) 1. Students must complete El Campo del Bosque Application form. 2.
