Arriving'To'Camp% Parents and Scouts should arrive on Sunday between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. All Scouts should ask their leader for the specific time they should meet at camp; some units car pool after meeting in their hometown. Upon arrival into camp, a staff member will meet you at the parking lot at the entrance of camp and, when your entire unit has arrived, guide you to your unit campsite. To speed up the process, please have your son s unit number ready and remembered. Departure(From(Camp% Camp closes at approximately 9:30am on Saturdays. Make sure you check with your Scoutmaster to see when your unit plans to leave camp. Most units tend to leave camp after the Friday closing campfire, which normally ends at 9:00pm. Make sure you have a ride home by 9:30am. Your leader cannot leave camp until every member of your unit has left. Parents are invited to attend the closing campfire on Friday evening at 7:30pm. Camp%Roosevelt%Staff% The Camp Roosevelt Staff, spelled STAPH, consists of Scouts and Scouters from the Tri-State area. Most of our staff members are made up of Life and Eagle Scouts, with many of our younger staff having also completed NYLT and have gone through our Roosevelt Rangers program. All staff members are fully trained under the guidance of the Garden State Council, with our senior members and area directors having been certified by the BSA National Camping School. Our staff members serve at Roosevelt because of their love of Scouting and their desire to provide you with an excellent summer camp experience. Camp Roosevelt also offers two convenient hot shower facilities, both at the pool and at the dining tent with separate facilities for men and women. We also offer two full aquatics departments (Lake and Pool), an archery range, a complete C.O.P.E. course program with zip-line, rifle and shotgun ranges, handicraft lodge, cycling course, and many trails leading throughout our camp. 1

Health'Services% For Scouts attending Camp Roosevelt, a physical exam by a doctor is required within the past year of the last day you attended camp. Please ask your doctor to use the attached BSA Medical Form to complete. You must make certain that the medical form is filled out prior to your arrival to camp (Parts A, B and C). Unfortunately, a camper or leader cannot stay at camp if the medical form is not filled out and signed, and will be asked to leave camp until the form is completed. The camp is required to keep the medical form at our Health Lodge, so we suggest that you make a copy for your records. We do have limited access to make copies at camp. Our camp s health lodge is staffed 24 hours a day by a team of both Paramedics and EMTs. A council doctor who is also on call 24 hours a day backs them. All Camp Roosevelt staff members are trained in CPR and first aid procedures. In accordance with New Jersey State law, along with recommended BSA guidelines, all medications (including over-the-counter) must be collected by the Health Lodge staff during check-in and are administered as prescribed. The camper after being logged in by the Health Lodge staff, can carry inhalers, bee sting kits, and Epee Pens. Food$Services% Units at camp may choose to eat in the dining tent or cook in their own unit sites, as some units do. In the dining tent, meals are prepared by our own food service staff to ensure you hot and plentiful meals served family style. Units are asked to contact the camp prior to their arrival if they wish to eat within their own sites or plan on bringing their own food for the week, as price deductions are available. Please inform your unit leader if a camper has any special dietary needs (vegetarian, lactose-intolerant, etc.) Special dietary needs are to be conveyed to the camp administration at least two weeks prior to your unit s or Scout s arrival into Camp Roosevelt. Your%Leader%Needs%Your%Help% Units are responsible for providing their own adult supervision at camp: minimum of one adult age 21+ and 1 adult age 18+ at all times. This is a BSA Policy. Parents who can stay between 1-7 days are always needed and welcomed. See your unit leader if you are interested. Don t forget, adults must have a BSA Medical Form filled out and also must be registered with the BSA prior to coming to Camp Roosevelt. All medications must be in their original pharmacy-labeled containers no exceptions. 2

Unit%Photographs% A photo of your camper and his unit is a great souvenir of camp. Both 5x7 and 8x10 color photos are available at camp, at a cost of $10 and $15 each. Please speak with your unit leader if interested. Food$Packages% Food packages mailed to your Scout at camp should only contain as much food as can be eaten in a single day. Scouts should not store food in their campsites while attending camp for the week. Dates In 2018, Camp Roosevelt will operate five weeks of regular Boy Scout resident camp program. Units are encouraged to create payment plans that suit the needs of their families. % % % % % % Pocket'Money'and'Other'Costs% The amount of money a Scout brings to camp is a personal decision. Our Trading Post offers a wide selection of camping supplies, merit badge pamphlets, camp souvenirs, candy, soda, snacks, handicraft kits and supplies, personal hygiene products, hats, t-shirts, uniform accessories, and so much more. **Camp Roosevelt does accept all major debit and credit cards also.** Communicating With Your Scout: [Scout s Name], Troop [#] Roosevelt Scout Reservation 384 Watsons Mill Road Elmer, NJ tt Two of the most common questions from parents are: Where will our son be? and How can we reach him? Please write, but do not call the camp office or your son unless it is an emergency. Camp Roosevelt encourages that Scouts leave their cell-phones at home prior to coming to camp. Remember, camp is an opportunity to connect with nature and the Scouting experience and get away from technology. 4

Provisional Camping Any Scout is welcome to attend Camp Roosevelt for a summer camp experience, even if he can only come as an individual. Provisional camping offers an opportunity for a Scout to attend camp who may not be able to attend with his troop or maybe just wants to attend an additional week of camp. Provisional Scouts will be paired up with an existing troop at camp and will have the same opportunities for program and advancement as any Scout attending with his own troop. For our specialty programs during Week 2, July 1 st to July 7 th, Camp Roosevelt will provide a Scoutmaster and additional leader for individual Scouts wanting to attend one of those programs. **Additional weeks at camp are $325, a $65 discount off the regular fee.** Your Day at Camp Your day at Camp Roosevelt will be filled with a wide range of programs. Throughout the day, you will have the opportunity to experience merit badge sessions, different program areas, and trying new and exciting activities. Please refer to the attached schedule to see a more detailed outline of a typical day at Camp Roosevelt. Have a Question? Please feel free to contact your unit leader or the Camp Director. Camp Director (Orlando Southerland) Orlando.Southerland@scouting.org Bikes In Camp Camp Roosevelt offers a unique biking program, with both elements of Mountain and Trail Biking, along with our Road Biking program for the Cycling Merit Badge. If you wish to bring your own bike to camp for the week, you must provide your own helmet and have your bike inspected by the Cycling staff before riding it. Bikes are available to be signed out at Camp Roosevelt over at the Bike Shop on a first come, first served basis. Camp Roosevelt and the Garden State Council are not responsible for lost or damaged articles of personal equipment brought to camp, including bikes. 5

Roosevelt s Rough Riders (First Year Camper Program) The Rough Rider program at Roosevelt is a fully staffed camp program area tailored toward the first-year camper. It is designed as a compliment to the troop advancement process, and many of the camping-related skills from Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks will be introduced and gone over. Staff will present material in a hands-on environment while encouraging friendly inter-patrol competition between the boys. Participation in Rough Riders by first year scouts is recommended, but not required. In order to ensure that our staff is prepared to accommodate the number of scouts wishing to participate from your unit, please pre-register online prior to camp. The Rough Rider adventure begins on Monday morning when the Scouts are divided into patrols and grouped with a staff guide. On Thursday evening the Rough Riders meet after dinner to participate in an overnight experience (or immediately following Vespers). After a 5-mile hike, each Rough Rider will set up camp in our Rough Rider Wilderness Site and sleep one night in a tent that they have helped pitch. In the morning, they will then cook breakfast with their own flag ceremony directly after. For this event, each scout will need a backpack, sleeping gear, tent, and water bottle. As this is only an overnighter, not much else will be needed. (for more information, see detailed page following this one) Please see that the pack is properly packed and the sleeping bag is attached. They will be awakened Thursday morning at 6 AM and should be returning to campsites by 8:30 AM. Merit Badges - As an extra bonus scouts enrolled in the Rough Rider program may work on up to three merit badges. Every Rough Rider will have 3 rd, 4 th, and 5th periods free. At the Monday morning announcements, the Rough Riders Director will provide each Senior Patrol Leader with a schedule for the week for their Rough Riders. This will provide your leadership with information about when your Scouts will have time scheduled in the pool and on which days they will be visiting the rifle and archery ranges. At week s end, summary sheets detailing which requirements each scout was present for will be placed in troop folders at McKeever Lodge. This sheet does not mean that the skill was mastered. Only a scoutmaster can judge whether his scouts have satisfactorily acquired a new skill. Please test, test and retest the scouts before signing their handbooks. Also, please remember that not all Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, and 1st Class requirements will be covered, and more or less may be covered depending upon the class s learning pace. 6

The Roosevelt Ranger Program (RRLC) The Roosevelt Ranger Leader Corps Program (RRLC) at Camp Roosevelt has been training young Scouts to become Camp Staff since Many of the camp s finest staff began as Roosevelt Rangers. If you ask any of them, we are sure they would all say that being a Roosevelt Ranger was one of the greatest experiences of their Scouting life. The program is designed to help Scouts grow in self-confidence and self-direction, develop leadership abilities and strengths expected of a leader, and to afford them the opportunity to test their merit as potential staff members. What does a Roosevelt Ranger do? The first week you are in camp is known as the Ranger Initiation. During this week, you will spend your time learning the skills necessary to be a good staff member and leader. This will be done through many different situations: Games, Teamwork, Classroom Training, Personal Conferences, Group Discussions, Program Observations and Setting Goals. The rest of your weeks are spent assisting many different program areas, chosen based off of your top choices and your evaluated skills during your Ranger Initiation. During these weeks, you will receive hands-on training on what it is like to work in that particular area. The area director, along with guidance from the Camp Administration Team, will help guide you through your experience. Also, each day you will receive time off to work towards merit badges and other goals you have set for yourself during the Ranger Initiation. What does a Roosevelt Ranger learn? There are many objectives in the Roosevelt Ranger Program, and when camp is over we hope you will have learned many important things. Some of them are: " How to become a good leader. " The role of each staff member and program area. " How camp is run by the Scout Oath and Law. " How each staff member is responsible for the camp s success. " Teamwork. " An increased awareness of your values. " How to set goals and obtain them. At the end of each stay in an area and at the end of your stay in camp, you will be evaluated on how well you performed. The Camp Administration Team will sit down with you and go over the process. Some of the things we will be evaluating you on include: advancement, cheerful participation, and instruction. After successfully completing the Roosevelt Ranger Program, you will be eligible to work at Camp Roosevelt the following year. Former Roosevelt Rangers are given preference for camp positions, which may be available the following year. How do I become a Roosevelt Ranger? To become a Roosevelt Ranger, you must be at least 14 years old, a First Class Scout, and have previously attended summer camp. Fill out the online application and attend interviews, which are normally held in January of the following year. The 2018 Roosevelt Ranger class has been filled for this upcoming summer. 8

Advancement Opportunities Overview Summer camp offers a unique opportunity for Scouts to work on advancement that would be very difficult, if not impossible to complete in another setting. Most merit badge classes are offered throughout the day during our six program periods, so Scouts have ample opportunities to pick and choose which merit badges they wish to work on. Many of the merit badges offered at Camp Roosevelt are very involved. The badge requirements may call for additional work outside of class time. When Scouts are selecting merit badges, have them look over the requirements before coming into camp, as some merit badges may have requirements that need to be completed prior to arriving at camp. Also, help guide Scouts in making choices that will benefit them while at camp. In many cases if work before camp is not completed, the requirements may not be completed and a Partial is issued. Merit Badge Partials presents a partial to the new merit badge counselor, the work previously completed may or may not be accepted. Most merit badge counselors will discuss with the Scout any work that was previously completed. The discussion will continue until the counselor is satisfied that the Scout did in fact complete the requirements indicated on the partial and therefore accepts the partial. The question arises How long is a partial valid? The answer: As long as the Scout is not yet 18 years old and can satisfy the counselor that he is knowledgeable about the subject. Merit Badge Completion Friday is the last chance for Scouts to pass in merit badge work. All program areas will be open to help Scouts finish any last minute work. The deadline for all program areas is 4:30pm. The following is the official BA policy on merit badge partials: When a Scout 9
