Boy Scout Resident Camp is June 17-23, 2018 OUR MISSION It is the mission of the Camp Arrowhead Staff to provide every camp participant with a fun camping experience by providing quality counseling and resources to supplement their Troop s Program. WELCOME TO CAMP ARROWHEAD! Summer Camp is just around the corner so it s time for you and your Troop begin making preparations to attend camp. The first step is to reserve a campsite for your Troop. Campsite assignments will be made by the Camp Management Staff, who will make every effort to accommodate the Troops request for a particular site. Troops bringing their own tents are more likely to get their requested site as space can usually be made in any campsite for these tents. It is also important to begin, now, orienting your assistant leaders, committee, parents, and boys as to how the Camp operates. All units must have 2 deep leadership at all times. (Staff members cannot be used in this position.) Individual Troops may combine during Camp to accomplish leadership requirements. We put a great deal of emphasis on boy leadership and the patrol method during Camp. Senior Patrol Leader meetings will be held regularly. Each participant must also be familiar with Camp policies, procedures, and advancement administration. It is especially important that you help each boy plan his personal Camp Strategy, with options, including dealing with any Merit Badge or NOVA prerequisite requirements. An exciting first-year camper program for scouts working towards First Class is offered. Camp Arrowhead CAMP ARROWHEAD OPERATING PHILOSOPHY The Scout is the reason for camp. They are with us for so short a time that we dare not fail in providing a wellrounded experience at Summer Camp. It is a fairly well known fact that most Scouts experience more total hours of Scouting in one week at Summer Camp than in the entire remaining year! Scouts expectations are great and they should be fulfilled. We view Camp as a laboratory of Scouting where youth can have fun learning and practicing outdoor and leadership skills in a controlled, safe environment. At Camp Arrowhead we constantly strive to have all activities and staff serve as examples of the AIMS and METHODS of Scouting. A FEW WORDS ABOUT YOUTH LEADERSHIP One of the aims of the Boys Scouts of America is the development of leadership skills. At Camp Arrowhead we take this very seriously, helping young men develop leadership. After dinner Sunday there will be a joint Scoutmaster/SPL Meeting. A senior Patrol Leader s Council will be held every day, at which the SPL will receive information about changes and upcoming activities. This is the only way that some information will be distributed. Each unit s SPL will be expected to communicate information to their Troops and communicate their Troop s issues and information to others and Camp Officials. Adult Leaders should give guidance to this process but should not participate in it.

Camp Arrowhead CAMP FEES, DISCOUNTS, AND SCHOLARSHIPS For Scouts attending as part of a Unit Dining in the Dining Hall: $ Youth with financial needs should apply for a scholarship. Units may choose to cook their meals in camp, furnishing their own food. The fee for this option is $ per youth and $50 for adults. The Buckskin Council will cover up to 50% of the Camp fees for one week Leaders Fees Units will be entitled to one free Adult Leader for every five youth attending, in excess of ten youth. The Unit is thereafter responsible for all damage to camp equipment within their site, pursuant to the Damage Agreement and Acknowledgement signed by the Unit Leader during check-in. Replacement or repair of damaged equipment must be arranged with the Camp Director prior to the Unit leaving Camp. Specific tent assignments will be made by the Guide. 8 Camp Arrowhead THE CAMP PROGRAM Some Programs are offered off the General Andrew Lewis Scout Reservation so you will find Permission Slips to be completed by parents or guardians. SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES Summer Camp programs are designed to strengthen the troop, patrol, and individual scout. The primary responsibility for leading and counseling boys lies with the Scoutmaster, assistant leaders, and troop committee. Camp Arrowhead s staff, facilities, and programs provide learning experiences in an outdoor setting that go a long way toward making the results more meaningful. Units are encouraged to take advantage of their own talent resources to enrich the camp programs for all. Qualified leaders may offer to counsel merit badges and should teach other skills while in camp. PROGRAMS FOR EVERYONE Opening Campfire - Troops are welcomed to Camp Arrowhead and introduced to the Camp Staff at an Opening Campfire on Sunday Evening. Chapel - Chapel Service is held on Wednesday evening shortly after the dinner. Camp Commissioner - At least one trained, adult commissioner is available to help units have the best programs possible while at camp. This person makes daily contact with troop leaders to help with scheduling, problem s o l v - ing, and interpreting camp policies. Twi-lite Activities - A wide range of evening activities which include all the old Camp Arrowhead favorites, new ones from Buckskin Scout Reservation, and, well, anything else that the staff thinks up. Family Night - Friday evening families are welcomed to come out to Camp Arrowhead and enjoy supper and then the Campfire. Supper begins at 6:00pm and the Campfire starts shortly thereafter. This is an opportunity for parents, family member, leaders, and others to visit during your troop s stay. Parents and families may wish to eat supper in the Dining Hall. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance (Thursday). A campfire will be held in the evening by the troops. FOR OLDER SCOUTS AND ADULT LEADERS Adventure Trail Awards - Older Scouts often come to serve as youth leaders and they should have something to carry home the same as the younger boys. That s why we developed two Adventure Trail Awards. The Silver Award requires the Scout to attempt a variety of activities in the various Program Areas while the Gold Award is earned by completing skills and activities. Both Awards come with a patch. Scout Leader Merit Badge - Camp Arrowhead offers many activities for adult leaders, too. We realize that you took some vacation time to come to camp and we think you should have fun while you re here. Of course there are twilight activities, observing Scout program areas and visiting with other adults but the really adventurous may want to try this challenge. Requirements involve visiting with certain camp staffers, participating in the many adult training courses, performing service around camp, helping out in a Program Area, and just having fun. L i k e the youth programs, this award comes with a patch. Adult Training - A variety of training opportunities are available throughout the week to help leaders provide Safe Scouting to their boys. These include (but are not limited to) Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb on Safely, Trek Safety Training, and other as we find need or ability.

Camp Arrowhead THE BADEN-POWELL PROGRAM For First Year Campers on the Trail to First Class Camp Arrowhead has long had a program for First Year Campers. For more than 10 years the Baden- Powell Program has been the best place to send Scouts who are on the trail to First Class. Scouts in this all-day program will be able to learn or practice many of the skills needed for advancement to First Class including cooking, knots, lashings, first aid, swimming, maps, compass, camping and many more. Scouts will form into patrols of about 8 Scouts lead by a older youth Patrol Leader, supported by an Assistant Scoutmaster (both of whom are Camp Staff Members). In these patrols the Scouts will learn from adults and older youth, as Scouting s founder intended. Boys will not make First Class in this very hands-on program, but they will get skills instruction to be re-enforced by their Troop at the campsite and after camp. The boys will have an opportunity to complete the swimming and first aid requirements along the trail to First Class. Adult leaders are encouraged to stop by and visit with their boys often at this area to view and assist with the instruction. We encourage all Scouts, not already First Class, coming to Boy Scout Resident Camp for the first time to participate in a Baden-Powell Patrol. STEM -- NOVA NOVA provides Scouts with awards (similar to Historic Trails or 50 Miler) for achievement in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The Camp Arrowhead STEM - NOVA Area continues to be a giant hit with the Scouts. Youth in this program will undertake projects that help their understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Prior to coming to camp scouts should obtain the BSA Nova Awards Guidebook (#34033). NOVA is best suited for Scouts who have completed the Sixth Grade.

Camp Arrowhead THE NEW ADVENTURE FOR OVERNIGHT CANOE TRIP The Camp Arrowhead staff is always looking for adventures for older scouts and this year we have added an overnight CANOE TRIP on the Mud River. Scouts will depart from Camp Arrowhead via canoe on the Mighty Mud River* and travel to an Outpost Camp for an evening of adventure camping. The next day they will paddle their way back to Arrowhead. This trip is available to Scouts who are FIRST CLASS or Higher. Scouts must complete the OVERNITE CANOE TRIP application included in this Leader s Guide *If the Mud isn t so Mighty this summer, the trip will be moved to the Guyandotte River MEDIA MERIT BADGES RETURN And with them the opportunity to work on the Camp Arrowhead Newsletter and the 2019 Summer Camp Promotional Video We will be offering the LOW C.O.P.E. PROGRAM again this summer and also a great CLIMBING PROGRAM including the Climbing Merit Badge

PROGRAM AREAS Camp Arrowhead Program areas are not only open for Merit Badge instruction, but are open during Twi-lite time, as well. Most program areas offer some type of activity other than Merit Badges. Here are just a few: OUTDOOR SKILLS - Totin Chip, Fire mn Chit, Paul Bunyan Award and Signaling. Adult leaders will find willing help honing their Scoutcraft skills. HANDICRAFT - Special demonstrations on skills not offered as Merit Badges are open to the whole Camp. POOL - There s always something going on at the Pool. Safe Swim Training, Safety Afloat Training and the Mile Swim. A wide range of Twi-lite competitions are always popular. SHOOTING SPORTS - In addition to Free Shoot activities, the Shooting Sports Staff have put together some more organized competitions including TOMAHAWK THROWING. ECOLOGY - It s always a good idea to stop by the Nature Lodge and see what crawls out, or what crawled in. C.O.P.E and CLIMBING - Lots of opportunities in this daring above the ground program area. Stop in to see what everyone is so up in the air about. (we re sorry, but we couldn t resist the pun) LAKEFRONT - Try a leisurely row or paddle. Step away from the dock and loose yourself in fishing one of the two lakes at Camp Arrowhead.
