Below are four recommend expedition products selected by our experts and reviewed by our customers to tell you what they re really like. OEX Puma 2 I bought this tent for my silver DofE and it rained all of the Friday night and Saturday and partially through Saturday night and no water got into the tent. I was really impressed by this. A great feature of this tent is that you pitch the outer first and then pitch the inner which ensures that the inner doesn t get wet. The inner hangs away from the outer therefore in the morning there was no condensation. Pitching the tent is easy and doesn t take a long time, however it is a little difficult if you pitch it by yourself. The inner and outer also come in separate dry bags to stop the inner getting wet. The porch space is a little small and you can only get one DofE style bag (85L size) however the inner is plenty big enough to get two in and possibly three at a push. For a two man tent the inner was very spacious and my dofe partner and I fitted without being too cramped. The only downside is that the guy lines aren t very visible at night. Overall I think this is a great tent and would highly recommend it. Great tent, would recommend it! 04 April Corin North Ridge Resistance Baselayer Fantastic value for money! 6 PARTICIPANTS LEADER & PARTICIPANT Participants kit hints & tips It's time to organise your kit and get packed, but before you do read this helpful advice. Waterproof Jackets Jackets with multiple pockets are great for extended walks as you can easily access essential items. Consider picking a jacket with a fully adjustable hood with a stiffened peak for use in bad weather. You should reproof your jacket every 4-6 months depending on usage. Jackets can be treated with a wash in product such as Nikwax/ Grangers, or a spray on solution. Cleaning agents need to be nondetergent based, in order not to affect the waterproof coating. CHECK POINT WHAT TO LOOK FOR? HOW TO FIX Floor of the tent LOOKING AFTER YOUR TENTS Holes or splits hints & tips Find a dry place to put up your tent & start checking Use tenacious tape or a patch for large holes or tears. Patch both sides. Inner Tent Rips, tears or mould Sew back up. Clean with water. 3 Rucksacks As a rule rucksacks are not designed to be fully waterproof. A rain cover is still the best way to protect the exterior or use a rucksack liner/ rubble sack inside to keep your kit dry. 2Walking Boots The most important thing when buying boots is ensuring they fit correctly. Always wear appropriate walking socks that you are would wear on your expedition. Your toes mustn t hit the front of the boot and your ankle shouldn t move around when walking uphill. Ensure you test your boots indoors and walk them in prior to your expedition Aftercare is also important with your footwear: Clean Inside. Brush or rinse out grit that can damage your linings. Clean Outside. Avoid ingrained dirt which harms leather and hinders proofing. Reproof. This prevents leather from cracking, fabric breathable and keeps footwear supple and comfortable. 4 Sleeping Bags Ensure your sleeping bag stays dry by keeping it in a dry bag or a bin liner. Sleeping bags will seem big and heavy in your rucksack, but staying warm at night is essential. A sleeping bag liner can also help to keep you warmer in colder climates or be used on its own in hot climates. Liners help keep your sleeping bag clean and are much easier to wash. Flysheet Seams Zips Rips, tears or mould Splitting Broken teeth or don t operate properly Patch with tenacious tape. Clean with water. Sew back together and apply a seam sealer. Broken teeth need a new zip. For sticky zips, rub a candle along the teeth to lubricate them. Guy lines Frays or breaks Can easily be replaced. Pegs Poles Bent or snapped Splits or breaks Bend back by hammering against a hard surface or replace. Fix splits with tape. Broken poles can be fixed by swapping out with a new section. DON T FORGET It is important to re-proof your tent every 6 months or so.
