Always check first with your Expedition Leader. 5kit hints & tips It's time to organise your kit and get packed, but before you do read this helpful advice. 4 Keep your kit dry Rucksacks are not designed to be fully waterproof, a rain cover is still the best way to protect your gear. You can also use a rucksack liner or rubble sack inside to keep everything dry. Consider picking a jacket with a fully adjustable hood and a stiffened peak for use in bad weather. Go to page 9 for Jackets 5 3 Sleeping Bags 2 Boot Fitting When choosing your boots always wear the walking socks that you will wear on your expedition, to ensure a comfortable fit. Your toes mustn t hit the front of the boot and your ankle shouldn t move around when walking uphill. Make sure you test your boots indoors prior to your expedition to check the fit - before it's too late! See one of our experts in store for boot fitting. Aftercare JACKETS: Products such as Nikwax or Grangers should be used to reproof your jacket every 4-6 months (depending on usage). Cleaning agents need to be non-detergent so they don't affect the waterproofing. BOOTS: Clean inside with a brush and rinse out grit that damages linings. Clean the outside but avoid ingrained dirt which harms leather and hinders proofing. Then reproof as this prevents leather from cracking and keeps it supple and comfortable. Sleeping bags will seem big and heavy in your rucksack, but staying warm at night is essential. Sleeping bag liners will keep you warm in colder conditions or used on their own in hot climates.
