3 BLACKWOOD SPECIAL SCHOOLS OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE Mission Statement Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. delivers quality adventure based education exclusively to students with special needs, challenging students to enhance their life skills by taking them out of their comfort zones in a safe and supportive environment. Goals To provide outdoor education programs for students of the Member Schools. To provide facilities and staff for the provision of Outdoor Education Programs for the students of the Member Schools. To develop and maintain the facilities at Blackwood. To provide and distribute Centre Manuals and other documents concerning and supporting the Centre. To foster an increased awareness of Outdoor Education within Specialist Schools on the broader community, with special emphasis on providing for young people with special needs and safety aspects. To raise funds to support the aims and maintain appropriate records of all financial transactions. To develop and maintain mutually productive and rewarding relationships with the residents within the immediate vicinity of the facilities. Objectives To challenge students beyond their comfort zones. To create a healthy anxiety for visiting students. To educate & role model gender acceptance. To provide a variety of challenging outdoor & physical endeavours. To ensure there is constructive advice within a supportive environment. To provide constant encouragement to all. Assess Assess the danger posed by the Emergency Use all your senses to build a picture which tells you what is happening and use that information to help decide on a course of action. 4. If necessary, move campers indoors, to one end of the building, to the furthermost part of the campsite or to a site well away from the campsite if time permits. 7 OUR RESPONSIBILITY Special Schools camping has achieved a very good name over the years that we have been at Blackwood. The local communities have befriended us and provided active support for our many ventures. In return, it is our responsibility to respect their property and their points of view. We have wonderful assets in our camps. It is up to us all to nurture them and, through our guidance, lead our students to a greater appreciation of others, of the bush and one's own property. Please be considerate of our near Neighbours and keep noise levels to a minimum especially at night. Aims of Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre To provide facilities and staff for the provision of Outdoor Education Programs for the students of the Member Schools but not excluding other Government Special School particularly at Blackwood. To provide safe, appropriate and challenging Outdoor Education Programs for all students visiting Blackwood. To develop, maintain and provide safe facilities. To provide and distribute campsite manuals and other documents concerning and supporting the camp. To foster increased awareness of Outdoor Education within Special Schools and the broader community, with emphasis on providing for disabled people and safety aspects. 9 EXCURSIONS IN THE AREA Blackwood SSOEC is affiliated with Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, which gives groups FREE ENTRY & discounted activity costs. If you wish to visit Sovereign Hill with a group while at camp, you must book through Blackwood Staff to get the special price. There are many other tourist venues around the Blackwood, Daylesford, Ballarat, Bendigo areas which offer special rates to groups using the Centre. Please contact the Blackwood Staff for more information and bookings. 23 CLEANING THE ACCOMMODATION SITES DO NOT LEAVE ANY FOOD BEHIND. If you wish to book the cleaner at the end of you camp contact the Blackwood Staff before or during your camp to confirm the day and time you will be leaving the camp site. This is a CASH ONLY SERVICE please arrange to pay cash a receipt will be issued with this payment. If you decided to clean the Accommodation yourself you will need to:- Sweep all floors Vacuum all carpets Ensure there is no rubbish or personal belongings under the beds Ensure there is no rubbish or personal belongings within the Accommodation Site Ensure there is no rubbish or personal belongings inside the tents DISINFECT & CLEAN ALL floor surfaces DISINFECT & CLEAN Bathrooms DISINFECT & CLEAN Toilets DISINFECT & CLEAN Kitchens DISINFECT & CLEAN Stoves, Ovens, Fridges & Microwaves WASH, DRY & PUT AWAY all dishes Sweep & Clean around the BBQ Areas Ensure there is a Blanket & Pillow available for each Bed Switch off all the Lights except Exit & Sensor Lights Ensure ALL External Doors are LOCK on departure It is important you leave the entire camp neat and tidy on your departure. Leave nothing behind. Ensure there is no rubbish left around the outside of the Campsite. TELL THE BLACKWOOD STAFF IF ANYTHING NEEDS IMMEDIATE ATTENTION, REPAIR OR MAINTENANCE. THE GOLDEN RULE IS TO LEAVE THE CAMP AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIND IT. Thank you for looking after your camp.
24 GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR HIRE It is the responsibility of each school group to ensure that campers understand and follow Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc, rules and procedures. Visitors should familiarise themselves with the Blackwood Manual located in each accommodation site on their arrival. The person in charge is responsible for the group at all times and they are deemed to be responsible for overall group behaviour, supervision and safety. ON YOUR ARRIVAL Report to Blackwood Staff to inform them of your arrival. Blackwood Staff need to address the group as soon as practicable after their arrival. It is the responsibility of the Teacher in Charge to assemble the group at a mutually convenient time. If group dynamics do not permit this then it is the responsibility of the Teacher in Charge to convey the safety briefing to the group according to Blackwood Staff directions. DRINKING WATER It is safe to drink the water from any tap at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE Please return all equipment & furnishings to its correct location. All groups are required to clean the camp on departure day. A list of cleaning duties is displayed in each camp. Blackwood is a Not-For-Profit Charitable Organisation so please leave it AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO FIND IT. A cleaner, who is available for a fee, can be booked through Blackwood Staff. If you require the services of the cleaner $45 cash must be left on the kitchen bench prior to departure. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES The Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Manual has all necessary information on emergency procedures. These procedures are also posted in each camp accommodation site. All visitors should familiarise themselves with these: Fire Fighting Equipment. Extinguishers are vital and are located in each camp. These should not be tampered with or removed. Hard wired smoke detectors are located throughout the School & Residence Accommodation Sites and should not be tampered with. Fires. No fire or BBQ may be lit on the property in periods of fire danger without the consent of Blackwood Staff. Fire Restrictions and Total Fire Ban days must be strictly observed.
25 PROPERTY DAMAGE & LOSS Groups are only permitted to access the buildings and activity sites to which they have been allocated. Please report all breakages and losses to Blackwood Staff so they can be repaired / replaced promptly. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. takes no responsibility for the loss or damage to personal property. Serious damage as a result of your groups behaviour will result in your School being invoiced to cover the expenses to repair the damage. PARKING All vehicle parking is strictly at the owner s risk. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. takes no responsibility for the loss or damage to any vehicle. THE ENVIRONMENT The School and Shelter camps are designated Land for Wildlife areas. Please look after our natural environment by: placing all rubbish in bins provided placing glass and plastic in recycling bins. If staying at the Residence, please take note if there are any chooks (there will be a sign on the fridge) and ensure that they are not allowed out of their pen!! Also check that they have enough water and food. Feel free to feed them scraps but no PEELS please. SMOKING All buildings at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. are designated smoke free zones. A Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. has a strict no smoking policy. Blackwood Special Schools is located on Department of Education & Early Childhood Development (DEECD) Land and is therefore a smoke free area. ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION The consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. OUT of BOUNDS AREAS FULL ADULT SUPERVISION is required AT ALL TIMES when children are accessing the Adventure Playgrounds at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. The Low Ropes area is out of bounds AT ALL TIMES. The Yabby Dam is out of bounds AT ALL TIMES. The Bush Cooking area is out of bounds for children unless under the supervision of a responsible adult. The Imagination Trail is out of bounds for children unless under the supervision of a responsible adult. The woodshed is out of bounds for children unless under the supervision of a responsible adult. All Adventure Activities at Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre can only be accessed with full Blackwood Staff approval, supervision, assistance and require visiting staff supervision at all times.
26 TELEPHONES The School has a telephone in the staff bunkroom and in the kitchen. The Residence has a telephone in the staff bedroom. The Tent Shelter has a telephone located on the Eastern side wall near the 1 st Aid cupboard. Emergency Calls - Emergency numbers are listed in the Emergency Management Plan and near each phone. Please inform camp staff if the emergency services have been called for any reason. All private calls must be paid for price list located on the wall near the phone, and money to be placed in the MONEY TIN provided. ACCIDENTS, ILLNESS & FIRST AID In the event of an accident or illness, campers are responsible for filling out the Incident Report Form located in each camp, and ensuring that the form is received by Blackwood staff. Every group using the camp (including weekend and holiday users) must provide their own first aid equipment and trained staff. Please bring appropriate first aid for the specific needs of your group. DIAL 000 FOR ALL EMERGENCIES GROUP LEADERS/TEACHERS IN CHARGE It is the full responsibility of the Teacher in Charge to ensure:- All students have appropriate parent / guardian consent to attend camp. Each student has a fully completed health / medical record sheet. The campsite s Incident, Accident, Illness & Near Miss Report Form and / or Patient Care Report is filled out for all such incidents. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. is provided with a written list of Student & Staff names. Group Leaders who are including Off-Site Visits and / or Activities in their Camp Program, are responsible for checking any safety issues in relation to the Off-Site Visit / Activity and taking necessary precautions in relation to implementing their chosen Off-Site Visits and / or Activities. All day visiting members of the group are advised of the campsite s safety and the necessary precautions taken. All groups adhere to Sun Safety Strategies. Bedwetters, sleepwalkers & campers under 6 do not sleep on top bunks. Blackwood Special Schools Outdoor Education Centre Inc. Staff are advised of camper medical conditions or behaviour that may arise and may place the group or staff at risk. It is a requirement of the Health Act that a list of all the names of participants and group leader details be kept for a period of twelve months in case notification is required due to Health reasons. This is the only information kept on file. FOOD SAFETY The person in charge is responsible for SAFE FOOD HANDLING PRACTICES AT ALL TIMES while staying at Blackwood S.S.O.E.C. NO FOOD IS TO BE LEFT BEHIND AT THE END OF YOUR STAY.
27 FILL THE WOODBOXES If you are staying at the Tent Shelter or School please ensure ALL WOODBOXES & KINDLING BOXES are full on your departure. The woodshed is located behind the office at the School Site the School Key will open the woodshed Wheelbarrows are provided 1 in the Woodshed & 1 in the Tent Shelter CLEAN THE FACILITIES At the end of your stay the person in charge is responsible for the cleaning of the facilities. If you do not arrange for the Cleaner to clean after your stay the following MUST be done:- ALL Carpets MUST be vacuumed ALL Kitchen, Toilet & Shower floors must be swept & mopped ALL Toilets, Showers & Basins MUST BE disinfected & clean ALL benches & tables MUST BE disinfected & cleaned ALL BBQ facilities must be cleaned ALL Kitchen utensils & facilities MUST BE clean, dried and put away FRIDGE & FREEZERS MUST BE emptied and clean DO NOT TURN FRIDGES or FREEZES OFF ALL furnishings must be re-located to their original location Verandas & entrance areas MUST BE swept and cleaned ALL cleaning equipment MUST BE put away ALL Lights MUST BE turned OFF on your departure PLEASE DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER If the facilities are NOT left in a clean state at the end of your stay your BOND MONEY WILL BE USED TO HIRE THE CLEANER TO CLEAN YOUR FACILITY AT A COST OF $100 NOISE LEVELS Please be considerate of our neighbours. Noise does travel a lot further in the bush especially at night. THERE IS TO BE NO EXCESSIVE & NO OUTSIDE NOISE BEYOND 10pm.
